If I were given the chance to go to Russia for a great job or free money or better healthcare, I would say “no, thank you.” I would say the same if it were China, North Korea, Iran, Afganistan, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba, Mexico, and so on.

These two Americans made the choice to go to Russia knowing the risks involved. No one forced them to go and they were not guaranteed any special protection by Russia or the United States. Any idiot knows that different countries have different laws and your American passport isn’t a get out of jail free card.
