The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) produces a monthly report of available job openings. The Job Openings and Labor Turnover Summary (JOLTS report) shows the number of available jobs at a captured moment in time. This JOLTS report [DATA HERE] is a summary of the last day in June.
As you can see within modified Table-1, the number of available jobs dropped by 605,000 in this report.
Hires and separations were little changed, so too was the number of people who quit their jobs. The big change in this JOLTS survey was the removal of available jobs. Employers cancelling job openings.
BLS – “On the last business day of June, the number and rate of job openings decreased to 10.7 million (-605,000) and 6.6 percent, respectively. The largest decreases in job openings were in retail trade (-343,000), wholesale trade (-82,000), and in state and local government education (-62,000).”
If we monitor the JOLTS report as an indicator of employment strength reflecting the general pattern of consumers, we can see a pullback in both the goods and service sector.
Retail job openings dropping 343,000 as consumer spending tightens even more due to inflation, and now we see the service side with leisure and hospitality dropping 91,000 openings.
All because they insist on pushing a lie. The weather channel founder got it right.
Fan-dam-tastic!
John Coleman was a great man.
It was good to see Coleman shove the term “denier” right down Stelter’s throat.
… and not be talked over.
Love that “stop talking now….”!
He treated Stelter like an male from the WWII generation would have treated Stelter .. like the pathetic misbehaving child that he is.
The fact that our generation would allow the likes Stelter to rise to any level of importance in our nation ….
I love this guy ( and you know they hate him ). First he states he is a scientist, then says science is about facts. Science is not about votes or polls. I think some CNN heads exploded when he said that.
I now call it the weather catastrophe channel. Everything is a catastrophe.
I detest heading there to get the weather only to find a show about people doing things in the weather they had.
There new strategy is to let the viewers know how many MILLIONS of people will be without power whenever they are covering a storm.
They should start a program that presents the millions of people without power and jobs owing to the idiotic green policies advanced by the international climate mafia.
He was our weather guy in San Diego on KUSI for years. He was always so knowledgeable. He passed away in 2018 and the science community is sorely missing such a wonderful meteorologist.
Yep, he was my local weatherman. K YOU SI! LOL Such a character.
Clearly BS had to consult his comfort food after this interview.

If the democraps actually manage to pass their huge tax increase on the middle class you’re going to see another wave of job openings when small business owners that may be in their late 50s say “that’s it, no more!” and decide to just shut down. It happened in 2008 and it can happen again.
My husband is shutting down in another week. Bye, bye, California!
Big Tech. Oracle, Fakebook, Google and many others have been and are laying off. The recession has been in progress for a while and employment is the lagging indicator.
there’ll be a lot fewer ‘job openings’ at Geico in the August statistics, I reckon
GEICO Closes All of its 38 California Insurance Offices, Putting Hundreds of People Out of Work: Report
I have Geico insurance, and if I wasn’t forced to have insurance (by the corrupt politicians who sold us down the river and now require us to have homeowners insurance, vehicle insurance, et. al., then they would have at least one less customer to deal with.
Oh, well. Play stupid games, California, and win stupid prizes.
For California, go bullish on Fentanyl, sidewalk tents, latrine buckets, and mortuaries. Knives and guns are always popular amongst the predatory population.
Zero Hedge had a post yesterday saying 1/2 of all independent restaurants weren’t able to pay their rent. Figure retail stores are in the same boat.
Should be lots of vacant commercial real estate and I can always spot 2 or 3 empty store fronts along any strip mall. The real estate holding investors should be seeing a lot of negative returns as well.
People die of the vaxx and you see no mass uprising. People loose their jobs and no mass protests. Even if there were, the media would ignore them and attack any mention of it.
In cases like this, the passivity of the GOP demonstrates how opposition is kneecapped by removing any organizing and support by the sole political group of any size that is supposed to represent people who are victimized by the left.
He’s working on it.
ROFL! That’s perfect.
Very well said. But the RINOs in the GOP team up with the slime rats on the other side of the aisle and we the people don’t stand a chance.
You know, I feel like what was done to the restaurant/hospitality industry for the last several years with the hokey rules (you need to wear a mask when you walk into a restaurant, but you can take it off once you are seated). have totally turned people off. Who wants to work in a job that you’re being jerked around like what they did to them? Most folks found other types of work and I can’t blame them. You pull the rug out from people and they’re not going to line up to have it done to them again.
Fauci and Brix need to face a judge and jury for the crimes they committed.
Consider these closures as future buying opportunities for BlackRock and Xi.
We ate at a restaurant we “use to” frequent. All prices went up a third, the meal that was served on a 12” plate was delivered on a 10” plate and as we were leaving there was a notice on the exit door that as of August 1st, a 20% service fee would be added to each customer’s bill (takeout or dine in) and the 20% service fee did not replace tipping.”.
Not returning to that restaurant.
A guy I know just got his commercial re rent reduced by almost half last month. They know. Owners of strip malls know what’s coming.
I hope some reporter asks at the press briefing, “Is the President still in denial about the recession?”
He would be if they told him about it..
Does anyone know anything about the PPP loan forgiveness? I know employers can’t lay anyone off for 24 weeks after the loans were disbursed. Now that the 24 week period is over, would that have anything to do with employers no longer trying to fill jobs?
Just my humble opinion… PPP loans were somewhat like Mafia loans, you never “really” are released. Our business did not take the PPP loans on the advice of or epic, savy, and direct accountant. Those PPP loans will never be truly forgiven, sorry Tess.
You can’t lie about something you didn’t build and get away with it. Being behind the curve on the reality of the economy doesn’t help them, either.
I work in the commercial construction materials industry.
Number of new jobs permitting and number of ‘Invitation to Bids’ decreasing.
Severe and ever changing supply chain issues.
Those projects that are still in construction phase have had a noticeable drop in activity. Phones are slow and orders are wreaking. Appears that the workers for the subs and general contractors are dragging their feet trying to complete existing projects due to subconscious and conscious worry, ie taking their own sweet time.
Mood is not good in the ‘field’ with everyone. Lots of anxiety.
Note: commercial always slows down after residential in construction. In mild recessions in the past (excluding the Financial Crisis beginning in ‘08) commercial may not even slow down even if residential does.
Work for a behemoth company. Appears to nationwide with the SE US holding up better than other regions.
IT IS NOT LOOKING GOOD!
I work in commercial construction industries as well. I don’t work for a behemoth company, but our products are used in conjunction with materials from behemoth companies like Dow, GE, Sika, Dap, and some BASF brands that were recently acquired by Sika. We’re seeing the slow down too, but we’re seeing tons of openings for jobs, but no one seems to want to do them. Mostly contractor positions, but also inside and outside sales for distributors. Not sure what that is about unless they are still getting checks from the government, and I assume there are fewer people due to deaths from Covid, lack of health screening during the lockdowns, suicides as a result of the lockdowns AND the jabs themselves (all cause mortality increase plus “long” Covid (if there is such thing) and “vax” (gene therapy) injuries preventing people from being able to work?
And yes, the Southeast still seems to be holding its own fairly well, especially FL, the Carolinas, TN and TX.
I work with all of those manufacturers and then some.
Concerning openings with us: we don’t pay enough on the operations side. They can make as much at a fast food chain, literally.
Inside and outside sales: a lot of companies stopped incentivizing inside sales. With the outside, they are cutting benefits or raising a the employee’s share of the cost, stripping accounts and lowering the commission rate on what is left.
That’s what happens when you have 2 of the 5 pillars of business administration running companies that come from Finance & Accounting (F&A) AND Human Resources (and they’re all young, stupid & woke).
The Accounting side sees all debits as expenses when some expenditures are investments to secure and keep business ad nauseous. The HE side think everyone is a number easily replaceable. Well, they can get younger and cheaper but they lose experience, revenue, and gross profit dollars. It’s been going that way for while but is accelerating.
February and November are historically the slowest months in commercial. The busiest are typically April, June, and October with May, July, August & September just behind.
To your other respondent. I worked in the Atlanta market for almost 30 years. My family is well know in Atlanta for 2 generations on the supplier side and still is. I’m in Florida now. And you’re right about Florida booming.
My daughter has about 28 years experience in sales to several large builders, (commercial and residential) in the Atlanta, GA area.
She normally sells millions monthly; however July sales were way down. The companies are concerned, however, they are looking at vacation time increase before kids go back to school; 1st week in August.
The month of August will be the tell-all or at least they will have a better idea.
Noticeably those buying up mid-size to large tracts of land and building are large conglomerates, rather than individuals; with rentals intended, rather than middle-class ownership.
Cause for concern that young couples will not be able to afford to build or purchase homes, rather they are opting for mini-houses, rentals or converting large trucks with trailers into “mobile” homes.
Yes, there is generally a slow down during July and August, but this year seems slower than it has been for years… at least from a sales perspective.
Dang! That’s sad about the young ones living in trailers and trucks.
Tiny homes. The young ones are woke and they choose this option. Less upkeep, etc.
Sounds like a real bummer for those young couples in the lower income brackets. their hopes may be squelched and not repaired for a good long while. It may take several years under a good economy with a good Republican President. This country needs help now.
Overlooked by BLS:
Construction lost 71k (18%) of its Openings
… TRIPLE the 6% drop in Total Openings
They just had a ground-breaking here in San Diego county (Chula Vista by the water – south county) for a new Gaylord hotel and convention center! Years in the making! LOL Should be interesting being nobody will be able to afford to rent out the convention center in a recession!
That won’t be the case this time.
company layoffs start today (promises 20% reductions by end of year). and … here we go!
Well, “removing avalable jobs” gives a well done duck and cover with a side of peppered plausible deniability (can’t tell I am hungry, LOL).
Business avoids the word “layoffs”.
So the mushman at 1600 can say, “my administration did not cause lay offs”….but they are there, fragrantly disguised.
Again, the destruction of the US continues from 2008.
If this admin in the swamp was really interested in the American people, they would have (and could have) created a far more successful policy structure than that of POTUS 45, which would have had benefits for all.
And honest bragging rights. Bigly.
It would seem to me that all politicians are opposed to the “We the People”. Socialism or Fascism, we are there.
The controllers of our elected officials are multinational corporations and the Chinese. The multinationals are owned by Saudis, Russians, Indians, Europeans, and never loyal Americans or believers in citizenship. They consider themselves above and beyond all those antiquated concepts. The decision -making is not American. Rather it is corporate (meaning pure exploitation at the cost of the nation and its people), and in some examples overtly hostile (China, Islam, etc.). The political class is bought by them to manage the liquidation sale of US assets including its citizens. Most of the big corporations that are on the ESG system and selling legacy brands to you are deliberately deforesting the wealth of the US and its people. This includes the corporations that feed you their lies, Disney, ABC, NBC, MSN, CNN, etc. They are also investing in our land to make us their tenants and supplicants. We are, in essence, being colonized. Our future, as they plan it, is to be consumed right down to our socks. To their view the US is a big retail store to be looted. You are part of the inventory.
Black Rock is a corporation that has the largest monopoly the world has ever seen and is using it to reduce the people to livestock. Our government does not lift a finger to mitigate this exploitation. Indeed they facilitate it by systematically dismantling the institutions that make our society and our lives. The Church, the Family, Citizenship, Patriotism, Art, Culture, Music, national sovereignty, security, love, all of this is on the table for them to monetize and consume.
Meanwhile we are preoccupied with covid, racism, transgenderism, white supremacy, the “brave” Ukrainians, climate change, sexual deviancy of all stripes including the seduction of the young. See the plan? See why Trump was problematic?”
Twitchy has an article on the increases in European energy costs. https://twitchy.com/gregp-3534/2022/08/02/winter-is-coming-europe-on-pace-for-very-high-heating-bills-this-winter-could-mean-a-longer-recession-for-the-u-s/
One German utility increasing rates by 130% on October 1. How many people can afford that without cutting back on non-essentials? It will slow down the retail sector and thus retail shopping even more over there and those increases are starting to come here as well.
I din’t know about Germany specifically, but in much of Europe and the UK energy costs have been really high for decades. Substantial increases will cut into more than discretionary spending, and even more people will die of hypothermia this year. It would also be interesting to know what the summer heat death toll is in, say, Paris, this summer. A lot of people die of the heat there every summer.
Which makes the globalists happy! Fewer people they have to kill with the jab.
It’s good to see some numbers reflecting our reality. It will be interesting to get July’s numbers.
People have been asking, “Where are all the workers??”
Is it because all cause mortality is up by 40%?
Is it because of vaccine injuries (very under reported)?
Is it because businesses that took pandemic money have to advertise openings but they can’t really afford to hire because of inflation?
Is it because people can easily get government money over working?
I’ve heard some small business owners say, “Some people don’t want to work”.
I don’t know what the answers are. I was going to try to do some research to see if I could find out, but I have 40 lbs of tomatoes and 20lbs of pickles to can up for the “long, dark, cold, winter” coming. Busy.
I am an industrial consultant. My customers are still busy trying to make things. There are still looking for employees. There is a sign in out front where I am today offering a signing bonus of 4 figures. I am in the middle of the country where the pain has not been as deep.
I’m unemployed. All I want to do is work (er, rather follow God), but all I don’t want to do is work for a corrupted system.
These idiots at the top can and do just print money and then give it away. I don’t want them to give me a dime, of course if they did, it would only be worth a nickel by the time they handed it to me and a penny when I go to spend it. But if I work a job with hopes of saving to buy a home, but said home inflates faster than I can save…why bother?
If working 40 hours a week doesn’t put a roof over my family’s head and I can’t feed them (not saying it’s that bad yet), then wouldn’t my time be better spent doing literally anything else?
If things get bad enough, my time might be better spent flicking off Denny’s and their “minimum wage” and fashioning myself an axe to cut down trees to shelter my family.
Perhaps we aren’t there yet, but when a whole chicken costs $15 at aldi….the time is coming.
That is a very defeatist attitude. Why bother? I’ll tell you why. You bother because no matter where you are or what you find to do, you achieve something in yourself to be able to achieve a pay check and hold onto a job. You do a good job for the reward of knowing you did a good job instead of criticizing the job you’re required to do.
You don’t start out with plans for a house. You don’t plan on 40 hours a week. You don’t judge the system, the company, or the supervisor as corrupt. You plan on working hard, doing a good job for whoever is willing to give you a job and a pay check. If you do an attentive, conscientious job, it will be rewarded either with a pay raise or promotion or a great recommendation for something else.
Learn to save money. Instead of the whole chicken at Aldi’s, buy the thighs package….more meat and cheaper. Or buy beans and rice and cabbage which can feed a family of four for 4-5 days.
The probable answer to your question is, “All of the items on that list”.
I thought the employers were having a hard time hiring people. That is the mantra when manufacturers are pressed about where the order is…they say: well, the supply chain, AND the manufacturer cannot find anyone to work.
BS@! Yes, there are a lot deads on their butts or in the streets. But that is no excuse for the manufacturers.
How many of those vacancies are due to lowball wages even before you factor in the current inflation rate?
Those manufacturers are my customers. They can not find people and the ones they have are working all the overtime they can. They are exhausted.
Won’t speak for others but I took my 45 years of experience in the machine work and fabrication arena and gave manufacturers, customers and government the finger. I’m done playing their sick game.
I hope others join us. Destroy the machine. We still have the skills and the machines and the raw materials. Time to turn our efforts to making war against the oppressor, not sucking his cock and buying him bombs and bullets to kill us with. Fck fascist corporations.
15 years of IT here, hit the “you have made it” (aka, consulting) career milestone and said, “I’m done” too. Here’s a list, from the top of my head, of offenses I suffered while working for the woke and fascist:
I’m not bitter, but I’m not going back any time soon. CEO’s are treated like Priests and 401k’s are the delayed promises that will never come. I don’t want my priest telling me he’ll forgive my sins and fill my wallet when I’m 67.
I’m in my prime physically and in my career, I’m 30. If no company out there can make an attractive offer to me, then no company deserves to have me. Not because I’m demanding something I’m not, but because I know my worth. These companies forgot a long time ago, while their wallets were being lined by emotionally abused labor, what the value of a fighting aged male who’s worked his entire adult life at his craft. And they don’t understand the wisdom of a man 30 years his senior.
Good luck to you and God bless, none of us should sit on our hands right now, but we shouldn’t be lining the pockets of those who enslave us either.
In a world where everything is backwards, perhaps the exact right thing to do is to be patient and “do nothing at all” (not work for money, but always work to better your family’s life: garden, maintenance, self growth, cook at home, etc)
So true. This is why the US Chamber of Commerce, who own many of our elected officials, want to destroy small business opportunities and usher in hordes of illiterate slaves from around the globe. The more they can regulate your options, the more they can exploit you. That is why the Soveits built walls around their territory to prevent escape. I am far from a communist but these degraded conditions produce the emotions of desperation that made communism so appealing last century. They are generating the same, I would judge possibly more intense, conditions to inspire the oppressed to strike back at the masters. There is a special place in hell for our elected frauds who have betrayed us into the hands of these parasites. Not to mention their infinitely evil organs of oppression in the alphabet agencies.
Part of it is that some employers who had received COVID-emergency funding available for nonprofits hoped and held out until the last minute that there would be another supplemental COVID Relief package passed. This didnt happen and many of these organizations had spent down all they had been allocated. Therefore, they removed the posted jobs.
Yeah, that was another sick game fascist corporations, their lawyers and government played. PPP was so full of fraud one couldn’t swing a dead lawyer without hitting a fraudster. That’s what America is. Pay attention to who didn’t ‘get in’ or ‘didn’t qualify’. There’s your sign. Now, oh, no, job openings gone. Insert sad face.
I appreciate the time, effort and research that Sundance puts into his postings.
Sometimes the truth hurts.
Lately, I feel like I am reading America’s obituary………one day at a time.
You are, make no mistake about it. It is over.
Maybe, maybe not. Is the illegitimate and corrupt government on it’s last legs? Almost certainly.
Is the spirit that founded this nation and the liberty it ensures over? Not even close.
I am certain things are slowing down as the lines at Chick-fil-A only go about 3/4 around instead of 2 full loops.
Here, they want about $7.90 per club sandwich. I don’t know who you are, but a piece of geneticially modified chicken with some freeze dryed bacon and a slice of garbage cheese and white bread is so bad for you that THEY should be paying us for the damage we’re inflicting on ourselves.
But I never eat only one, I buy 2 and I believe after tax that’s about $17. $17 for a “fast” food meal that I’d almost choose to skip already due to the low quality.
I don’t know how any restaurants are staying in business!
I usually get a southwest grilled salad. That will set you back about $10 with no sides or drink.
Why is MAGA Nation permitting this???
I don’t want to “make America great again”. I want to make it better than it ever was.
A good father aims to leave an inheritance for his grandchildren, not that they would tear it down and rebuild it, but that they would take it further than he ever could.
MAGA misses the point of what this nation was. Pride comes before the fall and if you start thinking you’re the greatest, you’re primed to be removed from that position by one more humble.
I have noticed that most of the online listing for the line of work I’m in are 30 days or older and just seem to be there to make it look like there is a labor shortage. The best I can figure is that they are not really hiring but building a data base. There is a lot of commercial construction being built but the contractors are only hiring low grade workers. I guess Old Joe’s green card and SS card holders crossing the border are filling the jobs. They hire by word of mouth.
The management positions that I’m looking for are few and far between.
I have been told by the employers that will talk to me that I’m over qualified.
Might be an interesting experiment if you told prospective employers you are African American, or transgender. If you get an interview, ask them why they asked you in.
Knowing someone who’s employer just laid off 200 in one day (most of their employees) this country is gonna be seeing big reductions in employment in the next 2 or 3 months.
The veritable tip of the iceberg.
Now, here’s a tricky question or two: if a company goes out of business, are its former employees counted among the unemployed? And, are its jobs counted by the govt. bean counters as lost?
Only if they file for unemployment, I don’t know what rules may still be in place from WuFlu but you will be counted as unemployed until you exhaust your unemployment benefits with your state and any federal benefits.
I myself exhausted my benefits and then I would no longer be counted as unemployed…. you become the “no longer looking for work” group that they do not count as unemployed.
Hence why we have so many openings unfilled as people in the ” no longer looking for work” are not looking for a reason.
My reason being:
Heck I would work in the grocery store part time but…with their mask rules and other B/S…… no thank you, you could not pay me enough to put up with your B/S or force me to get jabbed.
I have my own business but it just kinda limps by on a break even basis, worse now that my supply pricing went up forcing me to increase prices which reduces demand… makes limping by a little worse… we shall see.
Here’s a great video visual of a composite of some of Sundance’s articles. 11 minutes.
Hope someone can link it. Towards the end he explains unemployment rates in a recession .
https://youtu.be/GYUFoejo631
Have a look at the 10 year bond just today.
Is China dumping the rest of their 90 billion US bonds?
I have long had a personal theory that “Job Openings” have long been over stated, since we discussed here on CTH that the nearly 8 million folks laid off during the height of the sham-demic have NOT YET BEEN RE-HIRED.
All employment related statistics are fractions as in: numerator /denominator or numerator divided by denominator … in the case of employment …. or …..
number of folks (employed or unemployed) / Total Population Considered
The same would be true when discussing employment or unemployment vs available jobs.
Lest we forget, there are also numbers associated with how many immigrants (legal and illegal) are needed to fill jobs as well as the AG Holder created racial population ratios used in diversity law suits.
Then there are Taxes and other Government Money associated with these numbers.
Lies, damned lies and statistics, once more.
The vast majority of those NOT working today
… HOLDING OUT for another round of Stimmy Checks
… WON’T be working this year or next.
Soon enough that truism will be remembered again.
If you will not work you shall not eat.
Those willing to earn a living, somehow, will make it through better then the ones looking to subsist only on the handouts.
Hahaha, not everyone who’s not working is waiting on a stimulus. Some people are just tired of being someone else’s b1tch. I mean it’s bad enough most of us have to pay excessive abusive taxes at every level, why would anyone want to work for some of these POS companies and their management… (who will F*ck you the first chance they get.)
JOLTS is approximatly 35% real jobs and the balance are a mixture of “what if” and possible replacements in addition to possible expansion out as far 6-12 months.
Some companies have the same jobs open month after month. I think they just collect resumes. I agree with you most of these listings are not ready to go now jobs.
Layoffs are right around the corner. What are all of those illegals gonna do? Will they be the only one’s working because they will work cheap? I just don’t see how anything good comes from all of this.
Those illegals will be stealing, robbing and trafficking … or GONE.
They are economic tourists. Once the payola halts, they will return to their homes.
They are stealing jobs left and right in my area which is a Republican area. Interesting how that works, not sure what to think of it honestly.
I imagine your Republican officeholders are far too refined to say anything about it.
Cue the music:
“We’ve Only Just Begun …”
The biggest expense retailer’s can control is labor. Why hire someone just to let them go and let them apply for unemployment in two months? But keep the we’re hiring signs up so we can blame the lack of workers for poor service and bare shelves.
First, nice user name for here. I’m from near Columbus.
Anyways, perhaps in the height of the PPP loan some businesses scammed it by hiring people so they’d spend all of the loan and not have to pay it back? I don’t know?
And I do agree with you on the poor service and bare shelves situation.
Not to worry folks, Ol’ Joe has a handle on it!
If you listen to Janet Yellen and all the rest of the mouth pieces propping this illegitimate regime up, it’s all part of their plan, it’s just a transition….anyone asked them what they are “transitioning to” lately?
Never mind asking if the American citizens are behind this “transition” because they know we are NOT.
My friend is a high level employee of an international automobile fuel system manufacturer. He told me today his company is clearing the decks of unneeded employees and inventory bracing for an economic crash.
Asian ports are shut down. What’s here and on the way is all there is but there ain’t no more coming.
Brace for Impact.
My friend runs a large automobile manufacturing facility, privately owned. They make many components and assemblies for the large auto companies. He just laid off half his employees because the work is drying up.
Interesting report.
We’ve all been used to seeing ‘Help Wanted’ signs every place we go into. Myself, I tend to not even notice them anymore because, like the Hours of Operation sign on the doors, they are always there.
Now I’m going to pay attention again and see if there is a noticeable drop-off in those signs.
I’ll also pay attention to the rate at which those signs disappear. Rapidly means ‘deep doo-doo’ and it’s worse than we thought.
May you live in interesting times…
During the Great Depression from the 1929 crash, the poor and displaced formed shanty towns called Hooverville’s! It’s only right that during this coming Greatest Depression caused by a rigged election and cutting off petroleum to a petroleum based country, we form shanty towns called Bidenville. Those illegal immigrants caught in the collapse should form shanty towns called Sorosville. As corporations collapse, largely from being “woke” and stupid, the employees should form shanty towns called Obamaville.
Once again everything our government tells us is a lie 💸💸💸💸
We all know it sooner or later swamp scum floats to the top and in the slime and ooze there is truth always hidden
Thank the Lord we are not in a recession as my TV tells me.
