They are advancing a green / clean energy directive with absolutely ZERO plan to carry it out except making energy costs ridiculously expensive. The cost to charge an electric vehicle for one year is 4 times the cost of air conditioning your home with electricity! Now imagine that electric rates are going to skyrocket. So you switch from gasoline / diesel to an EV and you are still being charged an outrageous amount. Oh you like that new Ford F150 EV? Well what if you learned you could only tow a load for 85 miles before needing to recharge and spend 20 minutes doing so? Or that the EV battery pack won’t last nearly as long as a typical power train and end up costing you $15-25K to replace when it does expire? Also what about recycling the old batteries? Nobody is actually doing the recycling, heck they can’t even recycle the old solar panels. nor wind turbine blades. If everyone switches to electric vehicles we won’t even have enough energy supply to charge them all. Be prepared for brownouts and blackouts as well! Solar and Wind won’t cut the mustard which is why the EU declared natural gas and nuclear to be green energy! We need to start building more power plants anyway. There has been a breakthrough with nuclear fusion where an isotope pellet is fired at an isotope target every few seconds. The fusion reaction melts sodium and a heat exchanger transfers the heat to water which turns into steam and drives a turbine. It puts out more energy than it takes to run the reaction and as soon as you stop firing the projectile it stops the reaction. It can be quickly restarted again as well. Very little waste and very cheap to build, maintain and operate. Virtually limitless cheap power. We do that and then I would maybe buy an EV once the battery technology is improved. New Lithium Sulfur batteries have more energy density, can be recharged more times and are far easier to recycle than heavy metal laden Lithium-ion batteries currently in use. What they should do is push for these solutions and have them in place before they transition to a new energy plan. But nope, they are doing it all without a solution in place for when it inevitably goes tits up.
General Fusion’s virtual Steampunk technology and Hb11’s chirped-pulse-laser technology with direct electricity harvesting without a heat exchange medium are so cool and so unlike the “let’s build a star in a bottle” approaches, I am excited to see them progress.
Fully agree that there are so many amazing potentials out there, so many ways for us to ensure energy prosperity forever, and this push to destroy what works and graft the hell out of inadequate technologies so single-mindedly that there is no opportunity for the truly clean and efficient technologies to ever get off the ground.
