The Humane Society of Virginia is trying to find homes for 4.000 beagles, exactly two weeks after NIAID Director Anthony Fauci told congress he would no longer use beagles for allergy testing.

July 5, 2022 – Under fire from foes of federal animal testing, the agency headed by COVID-19 czar Anthony Fauci has canceled a plan to start new tests of allergy medicine on beagles, some as young as 6 months.
In a letter to Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) and promoted by the White Coat Waste Project, Fauci said that instead of dogs, the new hay fever drug will be tested on rodents.
“Although the contract to Inimmune Corporation proposed the use of murine and canine preclinical animal models, after consultation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the company elected to proceed using two rodent models only,” wrote Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. “No experiments utilizing the canine model are being conducted under this contract.”

However, I have seen some of what I would now call ‘crane flies’ there and at the dog beach, and my nosy dog stirred the flowers and leaves causing a swarm of them (lots of tropical flora and such near the parking lot. The nightly Mosquito spraying in my area of Houston has been absent this year as well, when in prior years in was common.
I ain’t seen Mosquito Control in a month or two, and our swampy County always has those folks out riding fourwheelers “checking” mosquito traps (allegedly) and then the spray crews come out. Nada, Zip, Nyet this summer. Also the County mow crews are letting the grass get waist high.

Greyhounds have always been in agility and obedience.
I fell in love with Greyhounds in the late 80’s when I met one at an obedience trial.
They excel in jumping competitions. Feather now holds the Guinness record for high jump. Cinderella is another record holder.
I believe some Greyhounds are doing well in dock diving.
It takes a special Greyhound to excel in even basic obedience. Most are compared to personality of–a cat!
Ex-racers don’t have AKC registration so that was obstacle in competing.
I believe AKC is now opening more competitions to non AKC registered dogs.
Confirmation is out of the question for ex racers. They are registered through NGA and not AKC. They were/are bred for what they are meant to do-and love to do–run. Majority don’t meet standards for AKC confirmation.
I have never been pro or anti Greyhound racing.
I am just pro Greyhounds.

Let me remind everyone, that the Humane Society of the United States is always viewed negatively in the true dog world
and is alleged to spend very little on the animal rescue and lots of bucks on salaries.
A little water on this fire: A few things to think about.
I would urge caution in adopting one of these beagles or any beagle pup unless from a verified registered litter, now or in the next 10-15 years.
You don’t know what they have been infected with.
If they end up in puppy mills, they will reproduce the same lines that may possibly be genetically altered.
There is also, (with the puppy mills and in backyard breeding programs, if one is looking for an AKC beagle), there is a lot of fraud in the the dog breeding business. Such as “fake” AKC papers.
If you want a breed, go to AKC Breeder of Merit and explore what is available. AKC is a huge corporation too, but they stick to their standards. Many breeders have pups and older dogs.
Formal Beagle rescue or other formal rescues are registered charity and tax free org’s, and they should foster the dogs in homes for socialization. Legitimate rescues take care of their health issues and treat them so they go to an owner, healthy.
Back to AKC…You can also go there and look up a dog to verify their ‘legitimacy’ with AKC if the dog is being passed off as ‘registered’.
Once from a shelter or rescue, they cannot be papered by AKC unless there is a formal process of transfer (purchase) of ownership from a registered breeder, done thru AKC and that is a process. A true AKC dog/pup/litter has registration numbers.
Given the national outrage after the abuse was brought to light…and everyone loving the Beagle breed, what better way to get the dogs into homes after perhaps infecting other shelter animals as well. After the negative press, who would not rush to adopt one? I was thinking of it but have changed my mind because of the ‘unknowns”.
Am just throwing this out there as things to consider. Do your research as I suspect they may have had their AKC numbers scrubbed and there will be little history associated with the potential adopted dogs.

A vet I know, who is the associate Dean for Comparative Medicine, who has FBI and DHS certifications, and clearances, studied the impact when there was a push to import dogs out of the china meat markets and into the US.

Some states have made it illegal for pet shops to sell puppies now. In 2021, IL passed the Humane Pet Store Law making it illegal for them to sell puppies and kittens.
I am not a breed snob. I love all dogs. But as in anything, buyer beware.

A good dog is a good dog. Period. No guarantees that a mutt will not have medical issues or live longer,etc. I have had mixed breeds that were awesome. Didn’t live any longer than any purebred.
You just have to find a reputable breeder. Invest in care and training,etc

I’m thinking that these dogs are living animals that deserve care and a loving home, regardless of their “AKC” qualifications or lack thereof. Anyone looking for a freebie that is AKC-qualified to produce clean pedigreed offspring is in the wrong place here. I’d approach these dogs as “mutts”, regardless of how pure their genes may prove to be.
Anyone who adopts a dog or pup from an unknown background should be taking the animal to a qualified vet for a full checkup including blood test, and the willingness to followup with whatever short term or long term care is required to secure the animal’s health.

Reputable animal adoption agencies or animal shelters have their adoptables spayed/neutered and total vet check before they are available for adoption.
In my breed group…retired racers-we always have vet do blood work, parasite checks,dental,spay/neuter
and even the AKC reunite chip. Total vet check up.
It usually cost more than the adoption fee! And that is with a vet who gives us a discount fee.
Anytime someone adopts a dog…or even buys a dog.. the first thing I advise is having your vet do a follow up check.
If a reputable breeder they will have a file of medical check ups and shots. And if any conditions that the breed is prone to having they have tests done ..when possible.. regarding those conditions.
In regards to these beagles -whatever group is put in charge should be required to have the same standards. Spay/neuter,etc.

Growing up we had beagles and spent a lot of hours in the field hunting bunnies. Beagles are the most friendly lovable dogs there are. Of course they are known for having a wander lust and a wet beagle in the cab of the truck with the heater after a long day of working is a real treat to the olfactory senses, they’re just a real fun dog to own. The treatment of these wonderful animals by Fauxchi is beyond inhumane.

About 5 years ago I adopted a beautiful little Beagle girl who had been rescued from one of these labs.
I will never forget our first meeting when she, along with a dozen other beautiful Beagles were released into the yard where they could meet the people who were going to adopt them.
My wonderful Cleo, who I had of course never seen before, came right up to me, put her paw on my lap and wouldn’t leave my side.
She was so frightened but she was brave as could be. Everything was new to her, she had been in a cage or room all her life and had no idea what it was like to walk in the grass.
That first night I sat and cried because I didn’t know if she was too damaged. I don’t mean physically but mentally.
Those disgusting bastards take away all the things that make dogs so special. Yet the Beagles remain loving and gentle with the monsters who torture them.
Our story has a happy ending. One day at a time Cleo learned what it’s like to be loved and spoiled. She learned not to be afraid of grass and butterflies. She learned to walk on the cool grass and smell all the scents of the woods and fields.
Most of all she learned about FOOD. Cleo turned out to be the biggest chow hound ever. Of course we have to be careful not to overfeed her because it’s hard to turn her down.
If anyone out there can possibly do it, I urge you to adopt one of these Beagles.
They are just the greatest dogs and you will be rewarded with their unconditional love and
devotion .
A guy down the road rescued two beagles. They’d get loose often and visit local homes and farms. Never stayed long – just busy sniffing around. It only took a few months and the two of them perfected tracking and chasing down rabbits, coons and possums. Problem was everyone could hear them for hours on end deep in the woods once they had something cornered. Our rabbit problem subsided but eventually, they became a nuisance and he could no longer care for them (they definitely had minds of their own 🙂 . I volunteered many hours socializing pups left at a local Humane Society in the western suburbs of Chicago soon after I retired. I was a socializer.. I would spend time giving them love and walking them. You knew at 12,13 and up no one was going to take them home. It was a kill shelter and we were never allowed to ask when they were not there the next day. I couldn’t take it after a time.. so your kindness and love is so appreciated. In the end for whatever time … you are both blessed deeply. Love your story. I would encourage anyone who has a tug.. go ahead and do it. Take the pup to your vet.. run some tests. Seneca’s story is a testament to what is good in this world.

I live in NY and there is an organization called BeFreegles that works exclusively to rescue the dogs that are being abused in the labs.
I heard that in NY and NJ they used to kill thousands of Beagles after they had tortured them in the laboratories. Nothing that the monsters do surprises me at this point.
All I can say is that it takes a little patience and a lot of love to bring the Beagles back to being normal dogs. The transformation with my Cleo was amazing.
Her first few days with us, she stayed in the large crate we have, with the door open. It was pathetic to see her so frightened but every day for the first week, she did come out and I carried her down to my yard so she could walk in the sunshine and smell the grass, leaves and other animals. Beagles have a tremendous sense of smell and it was like she was being reborn as she learned to walk around with her nose to the ground.
The stairs were another story, and that’s when she showed how brave she was. I knew she was terrified to walk up or down so I carried her. Then I would take her to the bottom of the stairs to see if she would go up one step.
It took awhile, but she soon was able to go up. Learning to go down stairs took awhile longer, but I actually cried as I watched her work to overcome her fear and go down the steps. Such a brave dog after all she’d been through.
I too encourage anyone who can do it to please consider taking one of the 4000 Beagles. They are great dogs who deserve to have good homes with people who love them.

Beagles have the same sweet personality, a lot smaller and are not traceable.
I am really sad today because my understanding was that testing on dogs was eliminated after what they were doing to ex-racers was exposed.
I wish the Beagles would have had the same public support the Greyhounds did and this would have been stopped a long time ago.

When I adopted my Beagle who had been in the labs her whole life, I too was concerned that she had been infected with some disease.
Apparently, if they are able to be released out for adoption like my Cleo was, then they haven’t been infected with anything terminal or long lasting. It depends on what kind of research they were doing on the dogs. Some of it is supposedly “benign” or so I was told.
Also, the organization where I got her thoroughly vetted (literally) Cleo, me and my family. We had to pay a fee for all the medical costs.
