It was not long ago when we noted the absence of food will change things. While Dutch farmers are fighting the government and trying to keep producing food, in Sri Lanka the shortages of food and fuel have reached a boiling point. Angry citizens have taken control of the presidential palace, set fire to the Prime Minister’s house, and overwhelmed government offices.
Fearing for his life, “Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said he would resign after just two months in office after protesters stormed and occupied the president’s residence and office amid public anger over the country’s deepening sovereign-debt crisis.” (WSJ link)
The U.S. State Department and the ambassador to Sri Lanka, Julie Chung, are asking for protestors to remain peaceful as if their hunger is ‘transitory’. However, videos from the country highlight the futility of platitudes amid tens of thousands of angry citizens who are desperate. It is a hot mess that’s likely to surface in other nations quickly.

Television news footage showed large crowds overrunning security barricades before breaching the official residence of President Rajapaksa. Some were later seen taking a dip in the compound’s swimming pool. Videos purportedly filmed by protesters and shared widely on social media showed scores of men rifling through drawers, sitting in chairs and lounging on a four-poster bed inside a bedroom of the residence. The crisis had been building for weeks as the protesting crowds had continued to get larger.
As noted by the Wall Street Journal report, “responding to calls by protest organizers to congregate in Colombo for mass demonstrations this weekend, Sri Lankans from far and wide improvised around acute fuel shortages by piling into semitrailer trucks, trains and overcrowded buses to reach the capital. Some walked miles to join the demonstrations.”

Protests with signs and marching don’t have much affect.
Sometimes they do but certainly not against leaders like Trudeau or Dutch PM Rutte.
The craftily planned peaceful protests organized by MLK et al during the Civil Rights movement definitely had a huge effect on the nation as did Gandhi’s numerous peaceful protests. These efforts advanced the goals of each movement significantly but they both paid a heavy price for their beliefs. Gandhi was an extremist however who actually stated that if the Japanese militarists invade India, the people should remain peaceful. He believed this would shock the Japanese invaders and change them.
Peaceful protests only have a chance of success when a nation like the USA or the British have “decent and reasonable” people with open minds in the highest ranks of gov’t that will see the cruelty or injustice that is being protested against and will be willing to adapt to a new more just reality.
Watching peaceful non reactive protestors being clubbed unconscious by merciless angry goons was a powerful message, but it took incredible courage to try this method of change.

Growing vegetable will help a bit but your family also needs grain, fruit, milk and meat.
A few vegetables grown in you back yard will not keep your family alive for very long and it will not keep them warn in the winter.
Potatoes and beans can keep your family alive. Potatoes for calories, beans for protein. You don’t need grains, fruit or milk. I’ve avoided all of them (except for avocados) for years. I haven’t eaten potatoes in years either but calories are currently plentiful. Meat would preferable to beans but beans are good as backup.
Nothing easier than growing green beans and sweet potatoes, and squashes/pumpkins. Your harvest will last around 4 months if stored cool, and of course beans can be dried, and kept for seed, or eating.
Sweet tators don’t always do well in the north, but Irish tators are quite reliable.
Spuds store well in a cool, dark room, and may be canned, as well.
Lots of vitamins and even protein in spuds.
Easy to keep a few laying hens for eggs, which are high in protein and fat.
Other veggies are good to have for vitamins and variety. Sprouts are easy to raise indoors and are full of nutrients. I have never tried it, but I wonder if it is possible to raise potatoes in cardboard boxes in the house, in front of a sunny window?
It is possible to raise a lot of food, enough to make the difference between starving and being a bit hungry.
Being a bit hungry won’t kill you, but starving sure will.

Did you know Geronimo chief of the Apache and his fighters could run 40 miles in a day then they would fight after. Is there anyone you know that could do that. I’m not sure if I know anyone that could.
If your garden space is large enough you can grow several rows of corn; let it dry; grind in food processor for meal. Chickens can be grown for both eggs and meat. Most cities allow chickens; also, some cities allow rabbits; and goats for milk, cheese and meat; check city codes and get education on how to grow foods. Vacant lots and neighborhood groups can be utilized to plan and grow foods. Be influenced by the Amish and the pioneers. Super markets are a modern convenience.
Also, start compost bins; research and learn how to make nitrogen fertilizer at home. Growing food is therapeutic, lots of physical exercise and enjoyable, plus rewarding with good meals.
You can compost chicken, rabbit, goat manure, etc. for fertilizer.
I have even seen YouTube videos on using healthy human urine, watered down, for fertilizer. I wouldn’t use it on crops eaten raw, but it might be good for things like corn.
Learn to trap animals–for food, not fur. On YouTube, check out the Meat Trapper, while it’s still up. Traps are SILENT and work 24/7. No, they won’t catch animals you might ordinarily think of as food, but all are tasty. Don’t fall into the “trap” of making ridiculous home-made “mountain man” traps. Real life mountain men used commercially manufactured traps such as can be found on eBay and Amazon…
This is an island. Meat animals will be extinct in short order. Fishing is more certain.

My point is that growing veggies requires water. In a drought state, impossible in most places.
With food and gas prices what they are, and people letting yards die because of the cost of water….gardens are not likely.
Remember that we have more illegals than any other state. Those extra millions have contributed to the water shortage.
You’re going to pay for food one way or the other. At least you can eat lettuce…a boxwood, not so much.

vegetable gardens are not as easy as you make it out to be. We have been doing it for about 4 years, and this year we ended up with little orange worms that killed about 1/4 of our plants, and are working on the rest. Also, here in Idaho, we’ve had a lot of rain and overcast skies, so the bees dont want to come out. I imagine in California, some areas are very restricted on their water consumption. Some areas are not even allowed to garden at all. So many variables. Especially to grow a garden that may supplement you family’s diet for a while. Have always had phenomenal success growing vegetables when we were allowed to use water for gardening. Local govt stopped that with $300 water bills to make sure you buy your vegetables at the store, where only moldy veggies can be found. If your only problem is orange worms, go online and find out what they are and kill them. If you have a smart phone, most have a “lens” or similar app that will identify wild plants, bugs, etc.
Also, it may be possible to grow certain plants alongside your crops that attract the natural predators of those worms.
For example, when growing lettuce, there are a couple of flowers you plant (can’t remember the names right now) along with the lettuce. There’s a YouTube for everything.
This is true. I am the granddaughter of an Irish potato farmer. When I was Growing up, my Grandpa kept a thriving garden in our backyard. This year for the first time I’ve added potatoes to my own little garden and they’re growing like weeds. Super easy. But I’ll never forget the reason my Grandpa emigrated was because his crop failed and he was literally starving.
Not easy, but doable. Gardening takes some energy, reading, researching on “How to grow” different plants in a particular area and time of year; Learning about pest and when they come out. Example: In my area, squash borers come out in June. I plant and have squash at bloom by the end of frost. It takes 30-days to start harvesting squash. I have my freezer full by the time the borers attack. I suggest to get involved in the local county Master Gardner Program; meet people and groups that are interested in growing food.
No one said gardening is easy, I think we all realize that.
The Lord cursed the ground with thorns because of the Fall, probably with little orange worms, too.
But we have to try, to learn and help each other.

try diatomeceous earth (DE) for those worms.
It’s organic and can usually be found in garden centers or on-line.
You might try picking them off by hand, too.

At this point in the season, raise whatever will grow NOW.
In the north, that means shorter season crops, or short season varieties. Some carrots are 90 days to maturity, some are only 55, for example.
Good idea to start building even a small greenhouse or hoop house or even cold frame. Extend the growing season as much as you can.
And acquire seeds now for next year!
Also, the bigger chick hatcherys, like Murray MacMurray, are still shipping chicks.
You can always barter extra eggs.
Good idea to stock up on rice and beans and canned goods, etc.
Make sure you have some way to cook and heat, as well as a means of storing and filtering water. A few solar lights are good to have, and don’t forget to stock up on meds, and animal feed.
I think we will be facing some rough times, very soon.

If you can grow a garden, go for it but that will have to wait until next year for most. More immediately, stock up on canned goods, rice and other shelf stable items.

I fear there may be food riots and garden raids by the lazy; however hopefully, that could be avoided by organizing community with the Master Garden Programs, learning how to make compost and nitrogen fertilizer, utilizing vacant lots to grow community gardens. These are great life-educational projects for teens. Read up on how the Vietnamese in New Orleans grew gardens after Katrina; they did not wait for the government to bring them food. Their efforts grew and they were able to supply others with fresh vegetables. Where there is will, there is a way.
