The Depression-era law prohibits corporations or limited liability companies from owning farmland or ranchland, but allows individual trusts to own the land if it is leased to farmers, which Gates intends to do.
Gates is the largest private owner of farmland in America after quietly amassing some 270,000 acres across dozens of states, according to last year’s edition of the Land Report 100, an annual survey of the nation’s largest landowners.

Many family farms can’t generate the tax $ necessary to pay transitions. Also land that has been in families for years that don’t have anyone coming up to take over can be sold for $3,00-$6,000 per acre depending on the quality of the farm (access to good water etc). I don’t know who could afford such a price besides the foreign agents and corporations who are currently buying up anything for sale
Also families with multiple heirs usually have sort sort of split. Even if one side wanted to continue they can’t afford to buy the whole farm and the downsizing of the current operation is not feasible. Small to medium guys getting choked out and bigger operations getting split and downsized each generation

In my neck of the woods, farmers own and or lease about 500 acres just to make a living. So that means that the Wunder Kind bought up about 50 +/- farms, at least it would be around here.

Ok, a football field including endzones is about 1.3 acres. So, all but about 10 states (my 10 state guesses being HI, RI, DE, NJ, etc) probably have vacant 1-2 acres of land available for purchase at decent prices. About 10 years ago, I bought a 12 acre place with 2 ponds, 2 wells, house, barn, outbuildings, in South GA for $85,000.
Land is out there. You can probably buy a bit for the price of a pricey used car. You don’t have to be Bill Gates. I know rural vacant 1-2 acre tracts are hard to find, but I bet there are some 5-10 acres out there. Maybe not this weekend, but take a weekend soon and drive in rural areas of your state and just check rural small towns. Maybe do some upfront research and check for towns/counties with losing population. Chances are if you read this blog, they would love to have you.

I’m nobody. Just another observer. But it strikes me every day that a large part of our population (including quite a few commenters here) are still thinking in terms of the “old ways.” A good number of us still value everything this country was built on, but the other side has “fundamentally changed” while we were laughing at them, and–in their minds at least–we are living in a totally-different world than most of us here grew up in and want to hang onto.
Gates and his kind are busy trying to create a future only they envision, and it has very little to do with anything we are familiar with, value or consider practical or beneficial to human development. Our failure is continuing to laugh at them and to think of their actions in terms of the past.

After a quick read, roaches and crickets were classified in the same insect category. They were very recently classified each into different categories. I wonder if it has anything to do with the above article? Who wants to eat a bug related to a cockaroach? Or for that matter who wants to eat crickets for their protein? I grew up on a farm in North Dakota about 160 miles west of where Gates bought this land. My Mother still lives on the farm which is roughly 380 acres.
Does she farm it? No, but she and my Dad raised 8 kids on the farm. Times were tough, particularly in the early to mid-1980’s when farm operations got so expensive. Many small farmers went out of business because they could not afford to compete with bigger farmers who could afford to put land into government programs, receive subsidies, then use that subsidy to rent more farmland.
Those that worked the system survived and became bigger. My Mother rents the land to a bigger farmer who learned how to work the system.
The land Gates bought is land in the Red River valley which is very good, prime farmland. I read somewhere the land he bought was used to grow potatoes. Further south near Grand Forks and Fargo, they grow sugar beets because the land is so fertile.
I see according to the ruling, he can own the land, but has to lease it to farmers. I would be curious about whether he would then be able to dictate to those farmers what they can and cannot grow. I could also see Gates reviewing every square inch of the land and figuring out how to gain a subsidy for anything not productive to him. Or, he could just put the entire acreage into a government program, receive a subsidy, and let it not be farmed at all. There are stipulations to some programs requiring the owner to maintain the land, but rarely does any government flunky care about what a big farmer does with land in a program.
As for how Burgum, Hoeven or Kramer got elected….Fargo. North Dakota is sparsely populated, with the biggest concentration of people in Fargo, which is also a raging leftist college town trying to pretend they can be just as leftist as Berkeley, and they vote like it.
I believe Kramer was a former University flunky. Both he and Hoeven voted for a Biden bill involving some kind of carbon trading or pipeline, which tells me they stand to gain from it in some manner.

Talked with a student who owns a green crop nutrient company. He reached out to the Gates group about his products and was told that since they are letting the ground go to prairie grass they would only be interested if it were free.
The land will be used for many things, but not natural food.
He will install windmills, solar panel farms, grow lettuce that contains vaccines, and other projects that promote his agendas.

Bill gates (mount magazine farms) owns ground within 30 miles of me. It’s soybean and corn ground but noting too special. It’s run by a management group.
Seems insignificant but many other farms are owned by insurance companies and multinational groups so maybe they could combine forces or something.
One thing I do know is less and less American citizen farmers own land any more and they certainly can’t afford to buy more.
