Project Veritas has published another recording of an internal Twitter all hands meeting wherein Elon Musk addressed thousands of employees for the first time since news broke of his plans to acquire the company. On the call, Musk described his affinity for Twitter and said the platform was best for “getting a message out” but noted that he was concerned about the platform as it currently stands, reiterating previous statements he’s made about bots, spam, and censorship.
“I think it’s essential to have free speech,” Musk said in response to a question about his highly publicized goal to bring free speech to the platform. When pressed about what that might mean in the context of animal abuse, sexual content and offensive tweets, Musk maintained his stance. “I think there’s also, there’s freedom of speech and freedom of breach, so I think people should be allowed to say … pretty outrageous things that are within the balance, the law, but, but then they don’t, you know, get amplified,” Musk added. Sounds subjective to me.
If Musk opens up interfaces to allow exchange between twitter and any other social media platforms, censorship will not be an issue. If a Twitter user wants to subscribe to a Telegram or Truth Social feed, they can. And reply or re-tweet.
Let the social media platforms all compete. Let folks block what offends them. Let users own their own data and do not mine it.
Then, I’m all ears. Do it as open source and the whole world is listening.

But what if voting is the problem?
I agree with our sentiment, but I think even making their code open source would be doing too little. Making our votes electronic instead of written on paper means we trust whatever devices and codes that are being used to record our votes. We could see the code they say is on the machine but how would we really know unless we tested each individual machine to make sure no additional code or modifications have been made, and even then, we’re trusting the person who is testing the machine to be ethical and savvy enough to investigate it fully for anything that might be hidden. There will always be cheating involved in voting, whether it’s written paper ballots or electronic. The goal is to be able to verify the votes we make end up actually going to the people we intended, and as far as I can tell, I think that would still be written paper ballots. Clearly we can’t trust these machines given the evidence.
All votes must be on paper – issued in person to pre-registered voter with ID. Paper scanners must produce a unique checksum signature in hardware for each ballot scanned. When full, or when poll closes, final scanner tallies also get checksums. All ballot checksums and all tallies with checksums are publicly available for independent verifications.
Same checksum/verification process for tallies transmitted outside precinct for totals.
This is done daily on massive scale for banking transactions with full accountability and end-to-end auditability.
Software and hardware from each scanner, and node in the network is also made publicly available to be compared by anyone to the archived open source.
Just listened to the entire meeting. Def sympathize with Elon here. He’s really walking into a hostile environment.

1) I might be old school, but it really grated me how they called him “Elon” and not “Mr. Musk”. Basic disrespect there.

IOW, you can’t really tell if he’s just going to be another “benevolent dictator” of Twitter – just with a slightly different set of euphemistically-couched narratives and biases, until he gets in there and does what he does, and we see “real” leaked stuff (i.e., actually unexpected leaks – not anticipated leaks).
I don’t think it can really hurt for him to get in there and shake things up (it would be hard to see Twitter getting much worse than it already is); but I also wouldn’t bet my dwindling retirement on the new outcome, either.

I think what he’s saying is, he won’t fake the popularity of disgusting speech. The way that Twitter currently puts “trending” tweets from Obama et al on blast so THEN they get magnified by the Twitter propaganda machine.
So what he’s saying is that on their face, disgusting hateful speech by itself won’t be magnified by “trending”. And in the case of Twitter that’s genius. And he’s right. If someone is talking about something abhorrent most humans aren’t going to follow it. And neither are most Americans following or “magnifying” the fake a$$ crap that the left peddles. They use bots to make it seem popular by trending which causes more real people to look at it. This is genius.
What he’s really doing is taking away the lefts ability to fake the popularity of their positions by “magnifying” them on the platform. He’s saying we will let the true tweets that garner actual popularity speak for themselves.
A bit of confusion for me… if Twitter’s business model is unsustainable because more real time user interface means more money is spent on infrastructure and energy (i.e., no economies of scale), how does Musk make money?
If Twitter’s infrastructure is sustained by the federal government’s intelligence community, then what motivation does the government have in supporting free speech, against their interests?
Is he buying Twitter to make it disappear?

There’s a world of difference between furry zoophilia photos and laughing at somebody because they want to be referred to as a wolf. You’d think Twitter could figure out how to write and enforce a TOS that doesn’t allow for illegal activity to exist on the platform while still allowing regular, if unpleasant, discourse.

It seems to me that the real issue is not whether or not twitter can be cleaned up and allow free speech. The real issue is should these platforms exist in the first place. People will always have differences of opinion and all these platforms do is air those opinions for ALL to see. All this does is leads to fighting and then suppression by whomever runs the platform. After suppression then targeting of the individual.
We didn’t have these things before and were just fine without them. Since they started they have been used to manipulate and shape people’s opinions, destroy careers, spread lies and steal elections. As a whole, society is not mature enough to handle using these platforms appropriately and we should get rid of them!
We were fine with the horse and buggy before the automobile.

Nobody is perfect, that being said, Elon is the only one capable/willing to take on the monster that is known as Twitter. Without free speech there will be no freedom. That’s why it’s part of the 1st Amendment in The Bill of Rights. People that do not like The Bill of Rights need to move to a Marxist/Nazi/Fascist country and enjoy their lives instead of trying to ruin ours.

Two comments:
Users should request the ability to set their own bidirectional filters. If someone doesn’t want to hear about Mike Pence, then they can scrub all missives from their accessible universe when they set the filter words themselves. They have that liberty to choose the settings, and the other users have the liberty to post their words as they see fit.
The problem with the setup is that it is free to post. Like anything else in the universe, every action has a penalty in the form of entropy. Posting should be the same. A user deposits currency into his account, and as he posts, he uses it up. Conversely, on the other side of the transaction, a user who is accosted with postings has their monies posted into his account. In every transaction, the company takes a cut. Thus, users would quickly disabuse themselves of the notion of free posting when they have to ante up periodically for the ability to do such.
Those two features would cure the problem.
It would also cure spam email.

I’m not impressed. Free speech should be allowed to find its own level. If it is false information, then someone in the conversation will say so. If it is racist, sexist, bigoted, then someone in the conversation will say so. The only speech that isn’t acceptable is “death threat speech”. That is already illegal and unacceptable. Your right to life supercedes someone making death threats with impunity.
So, should Musk be the secret controller who limits the extent someone’s speech gets heard? Absolutely not. Should a “viral tweet” that is questionable get secretly imprisoned? I think that’s actually bad policy.
Let the opposition speak, too. They’ll kill it.
