It seems some police may be trained to wait, assess the situation and then deliberate on the best way to handle things rather than charge headlong in haste.

Actually the lesson of not waiting should have been learned from the Colorado shooting many many years ago. I’ve forgotten the name of the school but it was the very first school shooting I remember. Their PRESS conference reveals they have an “official” protocol to cover for their cowardice … “barricaded suspect”. Yes, they have an OFFICIAL justification for cowardice. Simply declare the active shooter to be “barricaded” … and voila! You can “officially” have 19 police officers insert thumbs in their rectums … and let little children bleed out.
Folks! We’re on our OWN!! The police won’t help us. They’ve become government, paycheck collecting, bureaucrats. That’s their function … collect taxpayer paychecks. And this cynicism toward the police comes from a man who has supported the police for my entire life … until now. As others have noted here … these police are far more likely to put law-abiding citizens into handcuffs than criminals.

The lesson was learned from Columbine. I’ve been out 5 years and for my last 10 on the job our training was to engage the shooter as soon as possible. You were not to wait for back-up, SWAT, etc. Their actions were disgusting and they need to lose their jobs and should be prosecuted.

Don’t laugh – this shooter was brought down by “special operations” tactics, and that’s what it took. He wore body armor and was barricaded. An un-prepared police officer who tried to be Rambo was going to wind up Dead Rambo. This is not the movies. The police were not cowards: they knew they were out-gunned. The gunman was brought down by a specially trained team of Federal agents.
Current SOP calls for as few as one officer on scene to engage a shooter. THERE IS NO WAITING FOR A SPECIALLY TRAINED TEAM! ‘Rambo?’ …are you serious??? 21 dead, gunned down by a deranged, untrained shooter.

Corr: the shooter was wearing a vest WITHOUT the armor. And it is still strange that, armor or not, assault rifle or not, barricade or not, certain police officers ignored the danger enough to go in and get their own kids out. Of course their counterparts handcuffed and tased worried parents who tried to do the same. If you’re a cop you get to go in and save your own kid, if you are a civilian you get a gun barrel in your face.

If the police need to be as timid as you recommend in the face of a single shooter, then police are next to useless. Happily, the fear and cowardice that your words advocate can be thoroughly overcome with a quickly planned and sober approach, no small part of which is to quickly contain the movements of the shooter. Even a single defender can devise an effective plan to stop the perpetrator’s progress, and it isn’t to hide outside behind a perimeter of cars.
Listen up folks….100 bucks says I can hold off as many as 30 LEO’ with an AR, handful of grenades, couple of claymores. And if I really want to have fun, set up channels for K zones.

Exactly why I would not become a LEO: fear of getting shot; however, if I desired to be a LEO, I would give up my cowardice. With the right training, I would be able to handle a situation with an armed, deranged hostile individual. Once I made the decision to be a LEO, I would do my job which requires risk of life/limb/permanent injury, that’s what an LEO signs up for.

Lesson be armed don’t count on cops to protect your life; when seconds mean life or death police arrive in 15 minutes and in some cases do nothing because the are afraid and stand around for an hour.
It is a mistake for any person, group or country to count on others to defend them. Assume nobody is coming to your aid and prepare for that scenario. If somebody comes to help, that is just gravy, but your duty to protect yourself and loved ones remains.

I thought he was brought down by one off-duty Border Patrol agent whose wife texted him about the shooting while he sat in a barber chair. He said that he took the barber’s shotgun and headed to the scene. I don’t think any “specially trained team” of federal agents was involved, unless you mean that one guy was the team.

There are many unanswered questions. The border patrol agent using a borrowed shotgun responding to his wife’s call while getting a haircut? No helmet? So what if he the shooter had body armor? Buckshot to the face & head would solve that. Local police pulling out their own kids while not confronting the shooter? That’s just scratching the surface. One brave man with a trained gun most assuredly have saved children’s lives. Our law enforcement has been severely compromised and emasculated. My family will not be victims of the moral decay our culture is promulgating. We must always be on yellow alert for this sort of thing. I encourage everyone to train and carry. We must be able to defend ourselves. These are very serious times.

I’m thinking Lt Olivarez spoke out of both sides of his mouth. He just described taking fire from the shooter caused them to stand back, yet he says they kept the shooter contained in a classroom. OK, which is it? Were they ducking bullets or watching the door to the classroom ready to shoot if given the chance?
And if they knew they had the shooter contained in a room, did that room have windows from which they could fire into and neutralize him? That is, if shots are still heard, would not sneak attacks like that be warranted?
I see the idea preserving their life supersedes stopping a mass murder, hardly meritorious.
Cowards should never be hired to be police officers. If you have the weapons, the training, and the body armor, it’s your job to go in and protect the defenseless people who have none of that and are being shot at. Good grief.
