Jim Hovater: Every time I shop at a large, brick and mortar retail establishment, I wonder how much longer the appearance of abundance can continue.
At an ACE Hardware store in Los Angeles this afternoon, I marveled as the huge amount of square footage (floor space, rack space, wall space) currently devoted to outdoor grills and smokers, as well as to all manner of outdoor cooking implements, fancy-flavored wood chips, barbeque sauces and rubs.
Of course, most of the cooking hardware comes from China.
Has no one noticed the price of a beef, chicken and seafood to be cooked on all those fancy grills and in those smokers? Where is all the money coming from?
Meanwhile, I’m busy stocking up on freezable proteins and non-perishables, cutting back on non-essentials and looking for deals.

How my mother – a poor city girl growing up – stretched my father’s paycheck…..whether at the grocery store, household items and tasks, or work outside the home. We had one car and my father walked to the train station every day.
In the late 70s, I remember the gas lines and searching for the best prices at gas stations…many people switched to diesel cars, including my mother, because of the cost of gas….something we cant even do now because of the insane aggressive collapse America ‘go green’ policies…which have impacted diesel fuel as well…
I have a renewed respect for their efforts to make us…their children…never feel worry or go without….
I have employed many of their cost saving tricks during my 30 year marriage…but have been doing so with renewed vigor for the last months, even more so lately.
I have also been making every effort to urge my grown children to do so as well…..

If we’re not going to fight to save it then perhaps we need to help with the demolition so that the rebuilding can get started with people who actually remember what a fair amount of freedom is like. I was a child in the fifties, married in 72 and during that time it was amazing how little contact we had with the government at a federal level.
Things were moving towards what we see today even then but it was mostly out of sight to the average family.
