I must say I admire how the Fourth Branch is closing the gap on the less connected population by using capitalism instead of direct government creation. It’s simply brilliant.
Instead of the government building the surveillance hardware directly, the government will subsidize internet payments to individuals who will then ask the telecommunications operators to build the surveillance hardware.
Instead of Joe Biden giving AT&T several billion dollars to build the national monitoring system, instead he gives several billion dollars to the citizens in underserved communities, via subsidy payments to AT&T. The telecommunications control agents then build out more technological capacity that then flows into the government database.
Instead of the government building the pipes that tunnel into your home, the government gives you the money to pay the contracted pipelayer for the benefit of having the tunnel built into your home. It’s a fantastic use of the public-private partnership and yet few people can see what lays at the end of the interconnected system.

I don’t know,…if I were the survellence State, and had a problem with SO MUCH data, that it was challenging to sift through it all, to locate and identify the few individuals I was looking for,…I might create and market an “unhackable, untraceable” system,..after all, anyone who would WANT such a system, has self-identified as JUST the person who’s inet behavior I WANT to monitor, right?

the way I understand it, or used to anyways, is you can run tails (an operating system) over tor (an onion router)…
so what your ISP sees, and thereby the government, is that you are running tor (in other words, trying to hide)

I came to the conclusion long ago that any and all inet activity is not private and behave accordingly. All the tools they give us to pretend things are more private is only for our benefit and any and all such tools can be bypassed at will by anyone with the proper security level. I figure the NSA long ago got hardwired into every piece of electronics. The amount of data is mind boggling and the problem they wrestle with is not getting more but simply being able to make use of it all. As we have seen over and over text messages are not safe. As we have seen over and over, there are two standards of justice when it comes to crime depending on party affiliation so the use of that data can be assured to be held to the same high standards as a white house press secretary calling for the violation of federal law to incite mobs against sitting supreme court justices.
If government controls the internet, they control all information you receive. They decide what you see and hear and what you don’t get to see and hear. Wise up folks. This is a disaster. Say good bye to freedom.

I recently had to upgrade my 3g flip-phone to a 4g flip-phone — as 3g is being phased out.
Threw out my TV 20 years ago. Still — I recognize that I am most definitely in the minority — as the vast majority are “addicted” to their Smart Phones & their TV’s.
Those devices will enslave them, while entertaining them at the same time.

I used to feel like you. I always hated the way people behaved with their smart phones, as if they were an extra appendage they simply couldn’t be without for even a minute of their lives. I purposely resisted getting one until the responsibilities of my job changed to such an extent that I had to do it.

The “smart” phone withdrawals are a trip. I have experienced acute alcohol/xanax/ and morphine withdrawal syndrome symptoms separately. Quitting the phone was something else, very unnerving. The real struggle is re adapting your social life or lack there of. Once you’ve made peace with it, it is bizarre in the extreme to watch your friends, family and neighbors/co-workers with their faces glued to their digital keepers. It almost looks like they are smoking black tar heroin off of aluminum foil. When you break their gaze by asking a question, the discombobulated look on their faces tells you they were just smoking “digital heroin”.. If I wasn’t addicted to CTH I probably wouldn’t have a laptop.
I retired from active contracting in October last year.
Since then, I have repeatedly let my phone run the battery down because I dont care anymore about carrying it around.
I could not care less about the damn thing.
I like being back to the old days when I enjoyed being unreachable.
I have a tablet that I use when I surf, and even then about 30 minutes is the max.
I’ll let the missus maintain contact with the outside world, I’m done.
I’m thinking more and more about taking that leap, I think I will one day, just that so many bills get paid online now and the kids insisting I better NOT give up my smart phone because I’d be abandoning them, never mind they are all grown and living on their own for years already. Jeepers, I didn’t have a cell phone, internet or even a computer when I grew up and somehow I was able to contact everyone I needed to, they could get hold of me and I was able to find my way across the Country by car with just a map.

This program has been around for quite some time; my internet provider provided this $30 per month discount and said it was put in place with the last stimulus bill (under PDJT) passed and that the internet providing companies were told the program will last as long as the money lasts.
Noticed with this month’s bill the $30 discount was gone so it looks like the older stimulus money for this program must have run out; am thinking this new plan must have been simply the old one re-structured so Biden can put his name on it, kind of like Obama did with phones.
