The multinational Disney corporation decided to target conservative lawmakers in Florida after the legislature passed a bill to stop the sexualization of children K-3 in public schools.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis called for the legislature to consider the removal of Disney World’s special district status in a previously scheduled special session.
Today, the Florida Senate approved a bill to revoke Disney’s ‘special district’ status in the Orlando area.
(Via Wall Street Journal) – The Republican-led Florida Senate passed a bill Wednesday that would eliminate a special tax district that allows Walt Disney Co. to govern the land where its theme parks sit, as lawmakers target the company for opposing legislation restricting classroom instruction on gender and sexuality.
The GOP-led House will likely vote to approve the measure Thursday. Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, who called for lawmakers to consider such a bill in a special session he convened this week, has made clear he would sign it.
Losing the nearly 40-square-mile district near Orlando could be a major blow to Disney’s Florida operations.
[The special district] allows Disney to construct new buildings and expand its parks without having to adhere to state or county regulations related to construction, wastewater management and drainage. I’m not sure why some of the conservative crowd has a problem with this policy. It’s a cut-and-dried example of “defunding the Left,” a rallying cry of the Right for decades. It’s a domestic application of Trump’s Econ warfare against China. For the life of me, I am puzzled the hand-wringing by certain well meaning conservatives.

They, along with many others, also falselyclaimed the bill in question would prohibit “saying the word Gay” when it did no such thing.
The people of the State of Florida, via their elected Representatives, saw through the ruse and said “no” to such nonsense.
Let’s not mince words on what happened here: Disney decided to try to swing its corporate weight around and impose California-style queerness on Florida’s educational system and children through a campaign of interference and lies.
Yes, the legislature and DeSantis beat that back.
They won, Disney lost.

My former daughter in law was practically raised on Disney World. She went there so many times as a kid, she couldn’t remember how many times she visited. As I read it, Disney is probably paying property taxes and all Florida criminal statutes are being enforced on Disney property by the 2 Florida Counties’ Sheriffs’ Departments involved and the Florida Highway Patrol. Think several football fields long and wide enough for vehicles, everywhere. There are huge locker rooms….also football field sized, for the employees. You take a bus from the parking lot into the tunnels and to your locker room….put on your costume or uniform and go to your work.
People who live in Orange County HATE Disney, so they should actually be happy about this. This is the BIGGEST tourist attraction in the world….very powerful, lots of money and dirty politics.

How in the world was such a protection ever granted? Why are (were) they any different from any other company or corporation in the tax treatment they would receive? How did Disney ever get away with firing long-term employees in IT and replacing them with foreign imports while telling the soon to be let go employees that if they wanted to receive their severance they had to train those brought in to replace them?
