The remarkable aspect to this announcement is the openness of DirecTV’s admission.
Following on the heels of the demand from the White House to start blocking content against the interests of the Biden administration, DirecTV the satellite television communication company now part of the AT&T network, has announced their decision to drop the One America News Network (OANN) channel because OAN is perceived to be supportive of Donald Trump.
(Bloomberg) – DirecTV, one of the largest U.S. pay-TV providers, plans to drop One America News Network, dealing a major blow to the conservative channel that’s been criticized for spreading misinformation and had a loyal fan in former President Donald Trump.
The satellite-TV provider has notified OAN’s owner, Herring Networks Inc., that it plans to stop carrying the company’s two channels when their contract expires. Herring Networks also owns AWE, a lifestyle channel that stands for “A Wealth of Entertainment.”
“We informed Herring Networks that, following a routine internal review, we do not plan to enter into a new contract when our current agreement expires,” the company said in an emailed statement to Bloomberg News.
DirecTV’s contract with Herring Networks expires in early April, according to a person familiar with the matter. Herring Networks didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. (read more)
Given the fact that Joe Biden only holds support of somewhere around 30% of the country, this move by AT&T/DirecTV is quite remarkable.
One would think that someone in the corporate boardroom, perhaps someone associated with the best business decision, would give pause to any consideration of kowtowing to the demands of cancel culture.
Alas, it seems that voice was not present, or at least insignificant to the objectives of the corporate decisionmakers.
Any corporation making politics the central point of their business intent is automatically reducing the potential audience by half. There must be a strongly declining business model for the satellite broadcasting industry as a whole in order to make such a decision.
Perhaps the subscription-based entertainment and news alternatives have eroded the baseline for the TV business. I genuinely do not know. However, on its face, this type of a corporate decision seems like financial suicide.
Even DirecTV customers who may not watch OAN, yet retain some reasonable disposition to see a slippery slope as it becomes evident, are likely to view this decision negatively.
Regardless of the internal or background conversation, one thing is certain, DirecTV will lose more customers than it will gain. That is just a predictable outcome whenever you make political affiliation a litmus for a product.

And they deserve every lost customer they get and we can only hope they go out of business. It seems more and more that We the People are going to have to create parallel universes of our own- which could turn out to be a good thing.

Many of us live where there is no cable or fiber. And even is there is a good 4G signal, 500GB of data will cost hundreds of dollars/mo. I’ve no satellite or dish. Until very recently I only had DVDs, a media server and 50GB/mo 4g data. A few affordable plans for “unlimited” 4G are starting to show up but weak cellphone signals and crowded towers make video streaming iffy for some people depending on location.
For many, satellite internet, Dish or Direct Tv are the only options and are poor ones for streaming. Musk has been saying for years that we will see Starlink any day now 🙂

It first popped up moving around in different places up in the sky but I guess it finally decided on its permanent position. No, it’s NOT a star. NONE, or VERY FEW of the new movies or programming are worth a darn.
We, too are rural; we have no cable, sattelite OR broadcast antenae.
What we have, is a library of over 200 movies, and several TV series, ones that are good enough to watch again every six months or so.
We bought MOST at thrift stores or yard sales, a few we ordered off thevi-net, from used dvd sellers.
Oh and we have a library branch near by, and we regualrly check out movies from there.
We enjoy watching TV every nite, and hollywood elites don’t make a DIME off of us.
Its self-sufficiency for entertainment and like growing your own food, is an essential part of life, that you must TAKE back from THEM.
I could easily be content with my favorite movies, there are many. It’s not the same for my husband.
In all the ways a spouse could fall short of an ideal, this is not the one that is a deal-breaker.
I’ve found myself a gem and I adore him.
He doesn’t fault me for watching with pleasure the same movies time and again. The balance is cutting the cable and keeping us both happy.

I bought a Fire stick from Amazon tv and get almost everything I did with cable. Can get free tv shows using various options or get apps etc. all on a smart tv of course.
Buy him a metal working lathe or mill and stop wasting time with movies. I used to be a sports nut and when they went woke I completely quit watching. Learned how to build things on my vertical milling machine that have to do with survival of the fittest and I couldn’t believe how much time I’d been wasting on sports. Cancelled my Direct TV which I had since it was originally PrimeStar, back in 1994. Glad I did since OAN was one of the reasons I had kept it as long as I did. I’m cable free for over6 months now and save over $155./month.

One can watch OANN on the internet with a cheap subscription. Regarding Direct TV, they will soon be out of business due to the large number of internet movie channels that are now available. Cable will likely go the same way.
I subscribed to Direct TV about 10 years ago and cancelled them as I had signed up for a minimal service and they kept upgrading my service without even telling me.
We received bills for $200+ a month so I sent all their crap equipment back to them. We now receive their junk mail about every two weeks.They are a crap company who will rip you off.

Long rant here, but I was a legacy DirecTV employee, was an awesome company before they sold out to the AT&T death star. Good tech, hilarious commercials, lot of in house work, cared about customer, kept edge with sports content and high video quality
Many shops in operations side had the apprenticeship type of mindset, buncha tech school or ex military types, ability to learn as much as you wanted, not a lot of red tape. Do your work, have pride in it, leave politics and religion talk for outside work. Lot of grizzled old timers grumbling but teaching new guys and refusing to sit in NOC or learn computer stuff as they add another year onto their pensions. Happy to let new guys do that.
AT&T just sucked every bit of their soul out till there was only dust left. Not 1 single investment in capital or tech, as much bureaucracy as the government and no, they absolutely do not care about their employees. In fact they loathe them and would gladly replace with blobs of goo if they could.

That turned out to be disappointing. I left with the vaccine drama, they were eager and chomping at the bit for that OHSA regulation. Sure they will still do it on their own anyways.
Their field engineering and broadcast centers are hurting from lack of talent, people, tech, bad pay, bad policies, lack of leadership, etc etc and they just keep going out of their way to be rid of em in favor of LA creatives and woke folks. Very few legacy folks left.
Had high hopes they would focus on small market share, be bold, embrace the satellite… go after and retain the rurual/rv/boat/bars/hotels/sports type customers. Don’t let HR and ESG score from Black Rock drive culture.

I bought my parents a new cordless phone system for Christmas, and it has Bluetooth built in so that it can be used with up to 2 cell phones. Search the internet for cordless phones with Bluetooth, and you should find many options.

I’m using Ooma as a “landline” phone service. Ooma is a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service that allows you to make phone calls by using the internet rather than a copper wire landline. To use Ooma you have to set up an Ooma account, purchase an Ooma Telo device (available at Ooma, Amazon, etc), connect the Telo device to your internet router with a network cable, and plug in your landline phone or a VoIP phone. When you set up your Ooma account you can request to have your current phone number transferred or get a new number. I have my Ooma Telo plugged into one of my existing phone jacks in the house and I have a Panasonic cordless phone system plugged into another phone jack and it works great. The basic Ooma Telo device like I have costs about $73 on Amazon. Ooma says their basic service is free, however you do have to pay federal, state, and local taxes and fees (I pay about $7 a month). Ooma also has a Premier service that gives you additional features for about $100 per year. I believe that one of the Premier features is a second phone line, but you have to have a real VoIP phone to use it. Amazon offers a Telo and an Ooma HD3 phone for about $130 if you want to use a second phone line.

Canceled our DirecTv last week. Now I wish I waited until now so I could have used this as the reason to tell them to get bent.
We let DirecTV go three years ago after being customers for well over a decade . When we called in to cancel our account, the rep used heavy handed stall tactics to get us to keep our account. The phone call took forever with my spouse yelling and cursing! We will never go back to DirecTV again.

Biden’s statement and DirectTV’s immediate action in response may give OANN grounds for a huge lawsuit against DirectTV. When a company does something because they’ve been told to do it by the government, and when that thing is something the government itself is prohibited from doing (in this case by the First Amendment), the company is acting “under the color of law”, can be held liable for a violation of rights, and does not enjoy sovereign immunity.

Given that Dick’s sporting goods franchises willingly forfeited $250 million in gun sales, it seems that business decisions are not being made to maximize revenue but to minimize pushback from the political Left.

So do you have the hard copy subscription. I am being spammed by Epoch times wanting me to subscribe to the digital copy and I do not want the digital copy and I cannot possible read a newspaper on line every day. They are really irritating me and I am about ready to send them to the spam file. I would much prefer a hard copy…does it come once a week?
You could add some of the growing medical sites that are refuting the mainstream.
I dropped Redstate, they have to many RINO’s,
and dump RedState. Ugh.
I personally can’t read 3/4 of those… Their largely juxtaposed versions of CNN shilling for a different from of neochristian progressive RINOs.
Just my take… Much of the rights so called news is just a different set of propaganda taking points.
The truth is very unpopular on both sides.
