This is crazy. The Canadian government is saying someone made a mistake when they announced they were rescinding the vaccine mandate for cross border commercial truck drivers. As of right NOW, the January 15th deadline is in place. All truck drivers from the U.S. or Canada will have to prove their vaccinated status in order to cross the border.
CANADA – The federal government says that unvaccinated Canadian truckers will not be exempted from the new federal vaccine mandate for truck drivers coming into effect this weekend.
In a joint statement, Canada’s transportation, health, and public safety ministers said that Canada’s initial policy requiring truckers coming into Canada to be fully vaccinated, or face PCR testing and quarantine requirements, stands.
Despite the Canada Border Services Agency telling reporters on Wednesday that unvaccinated Canadian truck drivers arriving at the border would “remain exempt” from any testing or quarantine requirements, the government now says that information, provided by a spokesperson, was incorrect.
As things stand, and as was initially the case before this week’s confusion, unvaccinated Canadian truckers will have to “meet requirements for pre-entry, arrival and day eight testing, as well as quarantine requirements,” as they can’t be denied entry into Canada.
Unvaccinated or partially-vaccinated non-Canadian truckers will be turned away if they are unable to show proof of immunization or a valid medical contraindication to the COVID-19 vaccines.
“On November 19, 2021, we announced that as of January 15, 2022, certain categories of travellers who are currently exempt from entry requirements, will only be allowed to enter the country if they are fully vaccinated with one of the vaccines approved for entry into Canada. These groups include several essential service providers, including truck drivers,” said the ministers in the statement.
With just days to go before the vaccination requirement for truck drivers is set to come into effect, this is the second time federal officials have appeared to flip-flop on what the rules will be in the last 24 hours, though in their statement the government said its position “has not changed.”
“The information shared yesterday was provided in error. Our teams have been in touch with industry representatives to ensure they have the correct information,” reads the statement.
In order to qualify as a fully-vaccinated foreign national, non-Canadian truckers have to have completed their authorized vaccine series at least 14 days before entering the country and have submitted the required information through the ArriveCAN app. (read more)

Speaking from personal experience, over 90% (maybe 95%) of all gubmint employees (note I did not use “workers”) would not last a week in the private sector. Look at the DC area. In Illinois it seems that the IDOT workers who salt and plow the interstates, US highways, and state highways are the only state workers who do a good job.
In fact, this is the one thing that Illinois does better than Missouri.
Whenever there is snow or ice in the St. Louis area, the interstates, US highways, and state highways on the Illinois side are always much more clear than their counterparts in Missouri.
As much as I appreciate having well cleared roads, I’ve always thought that it was so random that this is the one thing that the state of Illinois has managed to do well.
I also don’t understand how MoDOT can so consistently underperform their neighbors in Illinois when it comes to snow and ice removal and never try to figure out what they are doing wrong.
MoDOT claims that it’s because the Missouri side has more traffic than the Illinois side, but that argument falls flat when you notice that Interstate 270 suddenly becomes noticeably worse once you cross into Missouri even though the amount of traffic remains consistent across the state line.

I drive up and down Interstate 5 in northwestern Washington state all the time. You would be shocked at the number of big trucks on I-5 from Canada. I saw similar, though not quite as bare, in my local Giant Eagle. I was looking for Ore-Ida crispers but could only find a few steak fries and a couple of very large bags of crinkle cuts. I had never noticed the large bags before. I think they were 5 lbs.
Anyway, there were a few other brands available in good supply but none of them were familiar to me. I am noticing that a lot too. More store brands, but also new brands taking over, all unfamiliar names.
The man stocking the freezer noticed me looking and said they hadn’t gotten any new stock from Ore-Ida and mentioned that they were missing 168 items, but I didn’t know if he meant in the potato dept. or throughout the store.
A popular local diner had no French fries on hand, at least not the normal steak fries. They served shredded waffle fries with their burgers, instead.
And the burgers looked thin, not thick and juicy.
I also notice the meat section in the supermarket sold small servings of beef packaged in unfamiliar brand names. I just picked up a small square of “corn-fed” ground beef to make chili. None of the meat in the case is packaged at the store.
There is a staggering shortage of drivers in Canada already. And no one wants the cross-border, long distance run, if there is any other way to make a living.
