Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg visited the Port of Los Angeles (POLA) and Port of Long Beach (POLB) to announce the Biden administration officially saved Christmas. However, beyond the ridiculous claims about increasing port container delivery, when there was actually a decline in port container delivery, the POLA and POLB scheme to hide the ships {Go Deep} has now spread to the Port of Oakland, California.

OAKLAND – […] Following its success in Southern California, the new system is being expanded to the Bay Area. Ships will wait 50 miles off the coast in a safety and air quality zone until their scheduled arrival time at the Port.
The new system became effective Monday. Ships will get an arrival time based on when they left their last port of call. Before Monday, ships were given an arrival time when they were fewer than 80 nautical miles from the coast.
The new system will allow ships to take their time getting to Oakland, reducing emissions while at sea. It will also allow more space between vessels at sea, making shipping safer especially in the winter when storms are brewing.
“The resounding success of the new container vessel queuing system in Southern California has set the stage for this expansion to the Bay Area,” said Jim McKenna, president and CEO of the Pacific Maritime Association, which represents maritime companies that do business on the West Coast, in a statement. “This updated system has reduced the number of vessels at anchor near our ports.” (read more)
The purpose of telling the ships to await their port time in a queue farther offshore is transparent. The Biden administration wants to give the illusion they eliminated the bottleneck of container ships. Out of sight is out of mind.
Operation ‘Hide the Ships’ allows the administration to make claims about port efficiencies and increased productivity that are abjectly false. unloading in other states, such as Texas, Florida, etc. on the gulf side?
Haven’t seen any reports but there are shipping analysts who post updates on social media and video channels so will look. IME, many container ships sized for west coast ports can’t fit the canal so that’s a barrier to east coast/gulf ports.
However, there are Panamax vessels, mainly self-contained units, being chartered to deliver traditional west coast loads more directly to their intended destinations on the Gulf or East coasts from Asia. From the analysts I’ve read, the cargo is mainly high value cargo, like electronics and high value perishables not appropriate as air cargo.
Self-contained vessels, while smaller, don’t depend on dedicated container ports and can land their cargo in shallower waters at ports without container cranes as they have their own cranes on-board.

Have seen that, plus Mexico is expanding their port facilities to handle the extra traffic this has brought them. I am not familiar with New Mexico nor Arizona, but before he left office Governor Rick Perry put allot of money into expanding and improving I-10, I-20, I-35 and I-45 that carry stuff from ports in TX and Mexico. Originally it was NAFTA related and folks were not too happy except Ross Perot who told us this would happen and he planned to make money if it did. Now it appears this has had an unanticipated favorable impact.

Visualize a 10,000 container ship chartered a year ago to carry 600 different customers’ containers to LA. If they want to divert, they have to negotiate with all 600 customers. More recent contracts may have diversion clauses. Those who didn’t plan on CA’s new, higher level of stupid and US DOT’s higher level of cooperation with CA stupid are screwed. The rest of us are too, but indirectly.
That’s why Buttahead went to Oakland. Companies that had been diverting their ships there to bypass the LA ports were getting their products. Can’t have that. Now those ports will also be moving as slow as inhumanly possible. The Washington State Ports are all in on the blockage, so it looks like much of our future commerce is going to have to come through TEXAS and FLORIDA.
Friend of mine operates the ports of Miami and Ft Lauderdale. Last I heard from him is they are operating as normal. Busy but normal.

How much food or other supplies do these ships have on board? How long will they be able or willing to wait? How long before Americans get tired of watching the waste of time and resources, knowing that the long term effects of this disaster will make future imported goods more expensive or less accessible?

East, Gulf Coast ports smash records in 2021 – FreightWaves
FYI, big importers began planning to reroute ships from CA in 2019 or 2020. That was while CA bureaucrats were finalizing measures that would hinder overland hauling of goods from LA & LB.
More ships will head towards Gulf Coast & east coast ports this year and next. Why? Biden’s “successful” fix of LA & LB port congestion encouraged CA to further hinder overland transportation. This outlook, of course, depends upon the US economy continuing to grow.
FYI, rerouting ships to the Gulf Coast and east coast REDUCES ocean shipping capacity, and thereby increases shipping services prices. How? Travel times from Asian ports to the Gulf and east coasts are about 2x to 3x longer than to West Coast ports. Longer travel times mean fewer trips per ship and per container. Because ocean shipping is a commodity, less capacity combined with steady or increasing demand inevitably rises prices.

Detention, per diem and demurrage are huge, unbudgeted cost drivers. If you’ll notice, nobody told China to stop sending ships.
