You might have heard media talking about the cost of the “average family Thanksgiving dinner” being 14% more this year than last year [Video Example]. The media is quoting a survey conducted by the Farm Bureau [DATA LINK]. The survey is an exercise in abject nonsense. Before getting into the details, let’s give an example of how the media is reporting about it [20 seconds] WATCH:
According to the Farm Bureau data being promoted by the media in 2021, a full Thanksgiving dinner for ten people costs $53.31 – which is 14 percent higher than last year.
FEED TEN PEOPLE for $53.31 ?
I had to look and see what fairy dust these people were smoking to come up with that number.
I found the Farm Bureau website, found the internal data and checked the shopping list pdf. Here’s what they claim:
Keep in mind, this is presumably for TEN PEOPLE:
Anyone else see a whole lot of silly in this list?
(pdf link)
Good luck making that veggie tray with $0.89 cents worth of carrots and celery. LOL
Anyone want to try going to the grocery store with $55 for Thanksgiving dinner for ten people?
Silly.
All of it.
Price here is almost triple that. (9 people)
Dinner from McDonalds?
Sure, if you share french fries, buy the two fers and drink tap water with your meals … otherwise it’s a hundred bucks.
I believe the “Miscellaneous Ingredients” category is where the pixie dust was included. I am sure that money somehow ends up in the pockets of Perkins Coie.
I just ordered lunch for my son and I from chick fil-a, 2 number one’s, large waffle fries, large drinks, side order of large fries and 6 pack of cc cookies, $27. There is no way you can feed 10 people a Thanksgiving meal for $53, lies, lies, everywhere is lies.
Comparing fast food to home cooked food is apples to oranges. If you made that CFA yourself it would be half the cost.
still costs lots more than what the farm bureau says
My wife can’t get out of the store for less than $50 on any given day. And that’s cooking for two.
HA! . I can barely feed just my wife and myself for that!
For anyone who budgets here. Aldi slashed butter to $1.99 pound. Fill your freezer. I hear butter will be $5 by December end. My loaf of bread went up 79 cents this week.
Right there with you. Looking for deals on coffee to stock up before the great inflation.
Government approved list. Do not vary from the list , for you will be deemed rich and taxed accordingly. We know what you spend and purchase via your debt cards. Again, any other variation will result with a tax on the rich.
Focus on arguing the line item prices on the list and you’ll loose sight of the fact that if this amount of food is for 10 people, then somebody has already re-defined the word “feed”.
Good point. This is a 4oz of turkey, 1 roll, spoon of peas, spoon of stuffing, 4 oz starch, 8oz milk, 1/10 slice of pie, no salad dinner.
Even a food bank or prison would portion out more than this list.
A good turkey alone can cost upwards of 40 bucks.
55 bucks right maybe if their part of the Dems voter base. Fake or dead
What about the butter? I just bought 3 pounds on sale for 5 bucks. How can you possibly cook or bake any meal let alone Thanksgiving without butter?
Whipping cream at 1.78 for 1/2 a pint? Wow, they are in another universe.
I did a little shopping today and my grand total was $98.16 for all the items on the list.
Two comments: 1) What’s the menu at the White House for Thanksgiving?!
2) Are they really claiming 14% inflation is a “win”!
I need to find the store they are using….
I just put all those items in my Kroger app cart houston metro. Came to 53.xx and my veggie tray was 10x the cost. I can’t believe it. So that’s 12 rolls for 10 ppl??? One pie mix makes 2 pies? Really? Shallow?? I would lose weight on this dinner. Light eaters only.
