I think the idea of “otherwise good people” suggests something about the human condition. That there’s something in humans who, under normal circumstances are normal, kind, helpful, etc members of society, and yet when something truly dark and evil moves in, another aspect of human potential takes hold and people look the other way, go into denial, fall victim to intimidation, etc. I’m not defending or rationalizing Joe, but I do think this idea is very salient and true.
