U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra appears for an interview on CBC News to share perspectives on U.S-Canada relations. However, what happens within the interview is a case study on how Canadian media represent an extension of the Canadian government.
This example is exactly why the Canadian people have no reference point for information counter to the official propaganda policy from their government offices. Rebecca Zandbergen, host of CBC’s Ottawa Morning represents the voice of government in combative tone, condescending attitude and refusal to accept counter arguments.
The level of passive-aggressive condescension highlights why Canada has continued to lose position in a world where pretending has become devalued. However, it’s clear why the Canadian people will be stunned when it all collapses around them. They have no reference points. Ambassador Hoekstra should get hazard pay. WATCH (prompted):
I like how Hoekstra reminds Rebecca Zandbergen that the 51st state issue surfaced as an outcome of a discussion between Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and President Trump in Mar-a-Lago that centered around NATO spending and reciprocity in trade via non-tariff barriers. The points Ambassador Hoekstra makes at the end of this interview are exactly on point, and yet Zandbergen pretends not to understand them.
The American govt is not running anti-Carney advertising in Canada. Americans are not banning Canadian products. The American Government is not telling Americans not to travel to Canada. The American govt has not banned Canadian companies from bidding on contracts. These are all actions taken by the Canadian government.

Hopefully the Canadians reading this site are sharing this information as far and wide as possible – you all need to prepare for what’s coming. Don’t forget, you wanted this.
Correct, but the sheeple have been grazing on propaganda for far too long.
“These are all actions taken by the Canadian government.”
I do have a sincere question. And apologies in advance for not really understanding the state of the matter. I just don’t follow closely the affairs of Canada.
so the question:
WHY WOULD THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT TAKE THESE ACTIONS?
it seems more than just a tragic mistake….something more along the line of complete and utter stupidity…or is there something they think they can win back by refusing to negotiate a better trade relations with the US? Again, I just don’t know enough about what the motivation seems to be. From my armchair, it appears to be desperation, but that isn’t how you work negotiatiions…you never bend down and appear to be desperate in the face of overwhelming reality…that canada really doesn’t stand a chance of changing what President Trump has already established. There is no go back in time. That should be obvious.
So why the desperation? Why not just concede. nash law/equilibrium and all that. Everyone wins something. Rather than everyone ends up losing more than if they cooperate. ?
is there some kind of economic crisis that canada is facing that makes negotiating a non starter? Is that it? That their entire economy has been based on a never ending trade agreement from decades ago? Seems like over that span of time, canada should have come up with plan b, some kind of contingency, should the trade agreement not longer be viable.? So perhaps I am answering my own question.
perhaps it’s not so much there were not prepared for President Trump and MAGA economic policies, but they were unprepared for ANY economic disruptions.
I dunno…just tossing out theories at this point.
but the question still stands…I would like anyone to provide their own take on this.
again, the question:
WHY WOULD THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT CHOOSE NOT TO RENEGOTIATE BETTER TERMS OF THE TRADE AGREEMENT ?
crushing their own economy rather than just go to the table and start a series of compromises seems like suicide. What am I missing?
God Bless America
Canada is stuck in this denial doom loop.
Hummm, all symptoms of a terminal case of TDS,…. anywhere.
However, Dr. Trump is here to help!
Canada’s PM was on a very strong EGO TRIP. He initiated the dumb ‘Elbows Up’ movement. He has no expertise in negotiating but he did pass himself off as a master negotiator. And that’s why he chooses not to renegotiate.
Slimy group. Nobody mentions Carney’s Epstein Island history, his Brookfield conflict of interest, his attempt to destroy the U S buck, his manipulatons to convince losers to cross the floor in the Canadian parliament.
I agree. All Epstein Island visitors should be prosecuted.
Prosecuted for what?
Maybe she’s not pretending…
Oh! Phil R – I just posted precisely the same thing, not knowing you had, and when I refreshed the page, there you are! 🙂
This man knows his stuff.
Yes, and held his ground not allowing her to drag him into ridiculous conversations. Good job Ambassador Hoekstra! Thank you for your wisdom and leadership!
I feel for the great Canadian people and the “truckers” who bravely protested evil and ill advised vaccine mandates from their government during Covid and were met with the government shutting down their bank accounts and other oppressive behavior.
May God protect the good Canadian people from their own government. 🙏🇺🇸
Sundance said, “The points Ambassador Hoekstra makes at the end of this interview are exactly on point, and yet Zandbergen pretends not to understand them.”
Maybe she’s not pretending.
When this insufferable CBC propagandist speaks of “predictability,” what she means is that the United States used to “predictably” let Canada take advantage of us.
She means that it was predictable and right and proper that the American taxpayers be made to subsidize their government.
That train has left the station princess.
President Trump will not allow the United States to be used as an unlimited ATM anymore. It’s time for the Snow Mexican government to grow up and become responsible adults.
May God bless and protect all Canadians who see through the lies that your government and your media are telling you. God bless each and every one of you.
Hard times a’comin…
“I’m not going to try to analyze Canadians anymore”. Instant classic.
I really like and respect the way Ambassador Hoekstra communicates.
Seems to be frank and friendly. Or at least not unfriendly.
And very patient.
Oh Canada. You’ve lost your way and run by the deep state-controlled British Monarchy, not your people. Good luck!
There are independent Canadian news media. One is Rebel News. They have a good podcast. More Canadian should listen to it and they’d have a better. understanding of what’s going on.
“The American Government is not telling Americans not to travel to Canada.”
We get (or used to get) a lot a Canadian summer tourists in my neck of the woods. And I will never forget seeing a post on another website in 2025, in which a Canadian asked if it was safe as a Canadian to visit the US.
Liberal Canadians are actually afraid for their physical safety when traveling within the US, because they believe they will be harassed and beaten for being Canadian.
Granted this was on a website known for being a leftist bubble, but still. The fact that a Canadian could seriously ask this question opened my eyes to the depth of control the Canadian media exerts how the average Canadian thinks, and it’s probably only a sliver of understanding that control.
+1 on the hazard pay.
Canada, a Commonwealth country which mirrors its sister member, the UK.
Which is currently in the process of tightening their totalitarian vise-like grip on free speech by attempting to control the YouTube algo so that only state “approved” “information” is available.

Personally, I think Ambassador Hoekstra missed his opportunity twice to tell the Canadian people how the 51st state comment came from Mar-a-Lago on US soil to the previous PM Trudeau who was graveling over how Canada could not pay their NATO spending.
All the while the USA has footed the NATO bill for them and others and how did our northern neighbor thank us?
They allowed the CCP to do military maneuvers on our mutual Great Lakes with access from Canada’s Camp Petawawa (2018-19).
This should be shouted from every roof top in Canada and USA!
We would have never known about this if it wasn’t for Canadian (real) journalist Ezra Levant of Rebel News.

Not unlike the US population, Canadians who have no other sources of information will fall victim to their hysteria when things “suddenly” collapse. (Things of any kind seldom suddenly collapse.) How many in the US have read anything on their own that completely refutes the Bernie Bros. assertion that Scandiavian countries are the model for socialism that finally works? Scandinavians themselves, particularly Sweden and Denmark, will tell you they have market economies on things that pay them revenue to support their social services and are vehemently not socialist.
Not seeking out anything except that which makes your confirmation bias happy isn’t unique to a particular nation, although Canadians seem particularly susceptible.
🎯 💯 Pete Hoekstra deserves a medal!
Here’s a couple of real-world MSM examples on-the-ground-in-small-town-Southern-Ontario over the last two days. I listen to the CBC news in the car every morning on the way to my local coffee shop. I like to understand what the narrative is for each day. Then compare with my trusted independent sources once I’m safely caffeinated. 😉
There are only 3 standard topics daily on CBC:
The first item in the headlines is always TDS-related, never Canadian. Then yesterday’s leading segment was the playing and positive analysis of Mamdani’s July 3rd speech. The pundits all agreed he’s the best thing for America and we need more of that here.
Today’s leading segment was entirely TDS/Orange man bad: A half hour interview with Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan about their new book “Regime Change: Inside the Imperial Presidency of Donald Trump.” As you might imagines, it was all fiction with no named sources, and every sentence criticized and ridiculed President Trump.
Plus portions of, and quotes from, these segments get promoted on all the other national and local TV and Radio channels, and newspapers, during the following 24 hours.
This is what the entire Liberal TDS/Woketard nation hears and believes daily.
Totally surreal. 🤯 😡
I noticed that she was like threatening Pete, by saying we will send our oil to the west to Asia and Pete said basically so what. Then she pivots to asking how do you think the agreement is going knowing full well here threat was going nowhere. Canada and the majority of their people and the media are typical leftists thinking they are better than everybody else. I said the other day the Canucks can now go to Mexico for the Winter and get their heads blown off by the Cartels. Screw them.
How the Canadian government controls Canadian media.
They do own CBC.
The Ambassador had to duck out of any 51st State discussion because Trump turned it into a populist level meme, challenge and insult. Stupid, stupid, stupid. And childish. Apart from that little niggle, I thought most of the points you made in your post are spot on!
The covid reminders just keep on coming.
Absolutely no surprise. I have said it here before, I listen regularly to CBC Radio (mainly classical music programming) because Canada is literally about 22 miles out of my front window. They break for CBC Propaganda (which they euphemistically call “news”) at the top of the hour. I get a dose of that VOMIT at least once a day! Here’s one example that immediately comes to mind, it was a big international news day …. A lot of stuff going on all at once in both Ukraine and Iran … serious stuff …. Newsworthy stuff …. What did the CBC “news” report lead with?? A much heralded CLEAN WATER DRINKING BILL the government finally implemented for certain “First Nation” Tribes. Drum Roll Please …,I remember the news reader explaining how it was “Years in the making.”
Wow. She seems brainwashed.
So on point for only one perspective and not curious about other perspectives.
I’ll take Alberta only as the 51st state.
England can have the rest.
