Starmer says he will remain caretaker prime minister until his Labour Party chooses a new leader — with expectations growing that it will be former Greater Manchester Mayor and newest Member of Parliament, Andy Burnham.

The Labour Party will select a new leader who will slide in as PM, who will finish out Labour’s term which ends in 2029, when Parliament will be dissolved and a General Election must be held
But Burnham as PM can dissolve Parliament now, call for a GE, and go to the country for a vote of confidence in his leadership of the whole UK.
This should be done.
In fact, when Boris Johnson was clinging to power, Starmer, Burnham et al excoriated him for his reticence in doing so.
Burnham has dangled the possibility of a GE after he is installed, but, as expscted, is walking it back….because of course he is.
My bet is that hard HARD Left Burnham will offer some weak excuse and refuse to go to the country. He didn’t manoeuvre this hard to place his fate in the hands of the downtrodden second class plebs two seconds after he has secured office.
Then be prepared to hear the outraged voices of the legitimate British citizenry…I guarantee they will come.

The immediate problem Burnham has, that Brown and Sunak had, is that of legitimacy. Failing to call an immediate general election the moment they became, unelected, PM’s doomed any chance that they could win such an election later on.
Burnham will want to take the Labour Party on a far left jaunt that will ‘solve’ all the country’s problems, or so their sheep-like supporters believe, so to carry on with Starmer’s watered down leftist gruel mixed with authoritarianism is simply not an option. Trouble is, any significant deviation from the wreckage of Labour’s manifesto pledges triggers the illegitimacy problem, with people increasingly demanding a new mandate for these radical shifts.
