Today is another opinion day at SCOTUS. Wil we finally get an opinion in Callais?
Callais is the only case left from the October argument list. It challenges a provision in the 1965 Voting Rights Act that been used to create congressional districts in which a group that is a racial minority in the state is a majority in that district. The plaintiffs claim this violates the Fourteenth Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause.
If the Court strikes down this provision of the VRA, one expects there would be a lot of lawsuits challenging districting in which these minority-majority districts were created. This could really upend all the redistricting being done in several states, and not just in blue states.
Callais is not only the one case from the October list that has not been decided, but Justice Alito is the only justice who has not written a majority opinion from October. Make of that what you will.
Sean Spicer recently claimed in “The Huddle” podcast that the Callais decision has been written, that the racially-defined district provision has been struck down, and the liberals are slow-walking their dissents to make it too late for the states to redistrict. No one else appears to have heard this rumor. However, Mollie Hemingway of the Federalist just revealed that the liberals in Dobbs slow-walked their dissents, so Spicer’s claim may be accurate.

China is right where Trump can call the shots due to the collapse of the Chinese real estate market which has erased all the gains made in the past 20 years. When Trump meets with Xi later this year China’s bargaining position will IMO be very weak to the disappointment and detriment of the propaganda machine in the US media and Canada.

Two days ago, Carney announced he was setting a government investment fund for Canadian citizens. IMO, everything that can go wrong, will go wrong.

the first to be heard are the two that are combined and are specific to the Trump Administration removal of Temporary Protective Status from refugees from Syria and from Haiti titled :Mullin Sec. DHS vs Roe (those here from Syria) and Trump vs MIOT (those here from Haiti). There were no formal “question before the court” added to the descriptions.
The second case is Hikma Pharmaceuticals vs Amarin Pharma Inc. about generic drugs and patents and there are two questions before the court on this case: The first is
“When a generic drug label fully carves out a patented use, are allegations that the generic drugmaker calls its product a “generic version” and cites public information about the branded drug (e.g., sales) enough to plead induced infringement of the patented use?” and
“Does a complaint state a claim for induced infringement of a patented method if it does not allege any instruction or other statement by the defendant that encourages, or even mentions, the patented use?”
