NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte delivered a direct reminder to the EU in Brussels. Brushing aside criticism after Donald Trump published private messages between them and telling EU lawmakers, he did not mind the disclosure. Speaking directly to the EU nations at the European Parliament, Secretary Rutte defended Trump’s NATO record, warned Europe cannot defend itself alone, and rejected claims linking Greenland talks to Ukraine.
Rutte reminded the European assembly that without the United States there is “no way” for Europe to defend itself. WATCH:

NATO Sec. General Rutte is of course, correct. He is a realist. Understands the reality that aside from the military might of the US itself, the best planes, munitions and arms in the world come from the US. So there isn’t even a practical way to raise Europe’s military readiness without the US.

I’ll bet if the USA pulled out of NATO, the EU could rearrange their priorities for their defense, even if it took initially took more than 5% of their GDP. Clearly, Rutte is pointing out that their free ride would be over and he’s willing to put up with 3 more years of Trump, figuring ‘normal’ relations will return after 2028.
Some may gloat over this comment … as an admission of weakness by the EU and NATO. Make no mistake, NATO secretary Mark Rutte is an EU loving Creature.
But take a couple of steps back and think over this comment by Rutte.
Exactly what is the threat the EU faces??? NONE
Rutte is actually appealing to nothing more than the need for the EU to keep the US Dollars flowing into the EU. The EU has more than adequate resources to defend themselves, economically and militarily … even from their contrived Russian Boogieman.
This is nothing more than cheap flattery by an EU operative desperate to keep the US Dollars flowing into the EU.
I have studied this a lot (for my job and in my graduate program in strategic studies) and have come to the following conclusion:
Rutte (and Trump) is right here. This relationship is mutually beneficial… but only if the NATO countries (ALL of them) pull their weight. Some punch above their weight class already (Poland, Turkey). Others have exquisite capabilities: Estonia/Latvia have great SOF, Estonia is strong in Cyber, Sweden/Finland excel in artic warfare, and some of our weapons come from Sweden (AT4, Carl Gustaf, precision bombs/artillery, AC-130 cannons) that all contribute to NATO’s force. The historical powerhouses (UK, Germany, France) have hallow forces. The officers/NCOs/Soldiers from the UK/Germany I have worked with were excellent… but they are under-funded. A few years ago, most of Germany’s attack helicopters can’t fly, over half their tanks are NMC (non-mission capable), and NONE of their submarines work… all due to lack of maintenance funding. The UK Navy is a shell of its former self. With investment on their part, these former powers could be revitalized and smaller countries (with some help from us) could be enabled to contribute at a higher rate.
If we pulled out of NATO and Russia invaded Europe, does anyone think we would not get involved? I think we would. If so, then Ben Franklin has some advice: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” If we pulled out of NATO, we would lose any leverage we have to keep Russia and China out of Europe.
Of course they cannot defend themselves. All these years, the only thing they have done is promote and advance the same socialism that they (or we) fought during WWII. I consider the EU Hitler’s dream: the Fourth Reich.

This is the frank talk that needed to be said as you might not be interested in war but war is interested in you.
This, what he has said out loud, is like a turd in the EU’s punchbowl. All of them, all of the EU leadership are just there for the money and the good times. None of them have the ability to actually do anything except attend cocktail parties and give grammatically perfect speeches that mean nothing. Their staff make the decisions, good, bad and ugly and most decisions are not “leadership” but trying to maintain the status quo and not rock the boat. The EU is/was a terrible mistake for Europe and it was intentionally designed like a trap with almost no way out.
