President Trump held a White House ceremony to celebrate the 1980 USA Olympic Victory over the Russian team, ‘The Miracle on Ice’, eventually leading to the U.S. winning the Olympic gold medal.
The oval office celebration represents Donald Trump in his comfortable element, celebrating American pride, laughing and bringing big smiles to all of the attendees. The entire event is worth watching, the media Q&A begins at 25:00:
.

That’s my President. 😂
Always has time to celebrate American achievement, with Americans. God Bless and protect this man. 🙏❤️
And yes, that was an incredible game to watch in real time.
It certainly was. I still remember it. An amazing game!
But I also remember the first game between Sweden and USA. We thought our team had you beaten, but 30 s from the end of the match you managed to equalize and the match ended 2-2. We were pretty disappointed at the time, but as it turned out that was the only match Team USA didn’t win. Absolutely fantastic!
And what a great cermony in the Oval Office.
We have an uprising of so called Democrat sympathy that has made its presence known in this country. It is alarming!
Dem are being elected to office now and its like Americans are DUMB and DUMBER.
This show of recognizing this team at the White House illustrates just how unpatriotic some Presidential terms have been. Celebrate America and our victories. Figure out where the traitors are by their actions and get them hog tied.!
Excuse my early morning rant about those among us who would rather live in a communist country.
I, too, remember that in real-time that magic moment on ice! Made us proud to be Americans and so proud of President Trump for memorializing that magic moment again in real-time!
Wasn’t there a ceremony in the oval office back then?
It is not like America hid that accomplishment.
So this should be a one and done?
Every year we celebrate and pay homage to our great soldiers of wars and military might. Should that be a one and done also? I think not.
Kash? Odd moments…
What a fantastic group of sports heros…that game defined ‘tears of joy’.
And what most people forget here is that the win over Russia was a semi-final game. The gold medal win was against Finland 4-2. Also, in a lot of places, this was tape delayed.
PT is a genius at starting conversations.
i think this is an example of him directing attention to a time when people
had a sense of national pride in America – and it was good!
two generations later, young folks have no clue what that is like.
they’ve been told our country is a collection of racists, fill-in-the-blank “phobes”, lily white,
man-splaining, domestic terrorists… which is an enormous crock of effluent, to put it politely.
our good works outweigh our missteps.
PT making patriotism great again.😁
best line by a team member: “if we didn’t win (the gold medal),
Mike (Eruzione) would be driving an Uber now.” 😂
to put it politely, our good works outweigh our missteps. PT making patriotism great again.😁
Isn’t it great that he is THE driving force in renewed Patriotism?
Yes it is.
Quote attributed to Churchill “You can always count on the Americans to do the right thing after they have exhausted all other possibilities.”
Glad to see the recognition…one of the top achievements in American Sports…
That cow has been bout milked dry.
I remember watching some of the best games ever played. Both teams fought hard, and only one gets to “win.”
I’m not much into sports, but every now and then a human competition “between the very best” is stunning to watch. Sure! Celebrate! 🎉
Soviet team. Conflating yesterday’s Soviets with today’s Russians is a mistake.
This was wonderful to watch. Everyone laughing ((media excluded of course)) and celebrating American exceptionalism. 😊
What was Patel doing there? If he wanted to meet the team members, fine, but he shouldn’t have been center stage. Very odd looking.
Thanks for this post, Sundance. It brought back the emotion I haven’t experienced in awhile. Real patriotism brought out by a bunch of amateur hockey players who never said never and a coach who pushed them to be their best.
Lake Placid, NY has a fine tribute to the “Miracle on Ice” and this coming January 2026 they will unveil a statue of Herb Brooks, the man who coached “the boys”. I get goosebumps just remembering it all.
Going to school at UW-Madison in the 70s, there was a great rivalry between Brooks (who coached at UM) and our coach, “Badger Bob” Johnson. They both came from similar backgrounds and swapped coaching the US National Team in those days.
Coach Johnson’s son Mark played for him at Wisconsin and was one of the stars of that 1980 Olympics team. Mark Johnson went on to be the extremely successful coach of the UW women’s hockey team.
Thanks for the story within a story. It’s these great behind-the-scenes stories that make history grand.
Thanks for sharing.
That’s alotta white hats. Looks great.
I missed this thread….my favorite….starts at about 02:00
Dang it, Aggiegirl! You just had to post this while I was trying to read and now my eyes are blurry.
I think anybody who played hockey, no matter what level, from the ponds to the fancy rinks, will appreciate how Kurt Russell
captured that moment.
Thanks for bringing back the memories, from frost-bitten feet to watching the greatest sport on earth, IMHO.
I was there in 1980….stayed in a local home just a stroll from the ice arena….we watched the gold medal game live at my host’s home from the Canadian feed…ABC broadcast of the match was delayed. My host and I rushed down to the ice arena after the gold was achieved by the U.S., to celebrate. The Russian bus was wedged into the parking area so that the door of the bus was up against the locker room exit for the team. Of course that triangle of space next to the bus, was taken up by a bunch of American hockey fans, with their index fingers up towards the bus windows, screaming U.SA!! What a moment….in person saw U.S. team twice, Canada v Russia, and was the arena wild for the gold medal ceremony? Yes…..!
I feel your love of the game, brother! What a great memory that nobody can ever take away from ya.
USA! USA! USA!
February 22, 1980 – USA 4, USSR 3
February 23, 1980 – A red pill moment, the Nashua, NH Republican presidential debate, “Mr. G(B)reen, I’m paying for this mike!”
February 24, 1980 – USA 4 Finland 2 (3 goals in the third period), another comeback not spoken of often.
I honor the 1960 hockey gold medal team and that Herb Brooks was the final player cut from that team. MOTIVATION.
What a fine three days.
To think the prime interest rate was 19.5% at that time and later that year it was 21%!
Thank you! 😊
Hubby and I graduated from John A. Johnson High School on the east side of St. Paul.
In the ’70s it was one of the best hockey schools in Minnesota, a state that has/had hockey leagues for elementary age kids and that sends their kids out onto the outdoor skating rink as soon as they learn to walk.
And you gotta keep moving to stay warm, which helps you learn to skate quickly.
The super cool thing about the Miracle on Ice team is that most of them hailed from Minnesota — 13 out of the 20 players had some type of connection with Minnesota — and coach Herb Brooks was not only a Minnesotan, he also graduated from Johnson High School.
His senior year Johnson won the state Hockey Tourney.
We watched every game and screamed with joy seeing them win gold.
Amen, Raven! I never realized how many Minnesotans were on THE team! I can’t imagine how freaking happy you all were when USA won!
My children all played ice hockey in their younger years. Each one had the opportunity to play in Lake Placid Tournaments on the “Miracle” Ice.
It truly was a magical experience for our entire family.
It’s a special place for sure.
Us hockey fans love President Trump!
