Multiple media reports are now outlining the movement of U.S. B-2 Stealth Bombers amid the possibility of strikes targeting Iranian nuclear facilities. However, despite what many media outlets might narrate, there is no way to determine the intent of the movements until some type of action actually takes place. It is all supposition.
The media are giddy with excitement.
Daily Mail – Deadly stealth bombers, which only the US has in their arsenal, are on their way to a US Air Force base in Guam amid growing tensions with Iran, according to reports.
Six B-2 stealth bombers, docked at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri, appeared to be on the move on Saturday morning, according to Fox News.
The bombers are said to have been refueled, which means they could have launched without full tanks due to the extraordinarily heavy bunker-buster bombs.
The B-2 is capable of carrying a 30,000-pound bomb, which experts have concluded could be the only way to destroy Iran’s most heavily fortified nuclear site, Fordo.
The bomb, known as the GBU-57 or the Massive Ordinance Penetrator, is something only the US military possesses.
The Fordo fuel enrichment plant is buried deep within a mountain system in Iran, but experts don’t know exactly how deep, which complicates a potential US mission to neutralize it. (read more)
A more pragmatic perspective would be the proactive movement of the resources closer to the region in order to give President Trump the option to use them. With this level of widespread media discussion, there may be just an intent to stir the psychology of the adversary.
Using a “drop and run” approach seems haphazard given the ambiguity of GBU-57 efficacy (uncertainty of facility depth, concrete density, construction for blast channeling, limited testing, no testing against the expected conditions, and ultimate unknowability of success).
Seems like a distraction. But can the area be secured for ground operations for a day or two? Media reports immediately said Trump dismissed (Israeli) ground assault (no details), then we headed off into long ambiguous public discourse about bunker buster bomb performance. Coincidentally, another “BBB”.
While everyone talks about hypothetical half-baked bombing runs, and Fox News runs play-by-play analysis of the hardware and how it will be used, there is zero discussion of Iranian troops in the area, whether they are stationed inside the facility, entrance mechanisms, etc.
90% chance the two week window also facilitates infiltrating ground assets and extraction mechanisms while everyone follows the B-2 “shiny” flying around the world, with breathless reports on their movements somehow being available.

It’s likely that not only is some quantity of fissile material stored elsewhere, bomb components are also stored elsewhere and can be quickly mated to the fissile material to create a functional nuclear weapon. (If that hasn’t been done already.) Moreover, bomb physics is bomb physics. A new design for a nuclear weapon doesn’t necessarily have to be tested to the point of detonation to be reasonably confident it will work the first time out of the box.

It’s for initial production of fissile bomb material and possibly for bomb components. But once made, these don’t have to be stored there. The smart thing to do after these things are produced is to disperse them in places which are too many and too spread out geographically to be easily discovered and destroyed in a short campaign. It’s perfectly reasonable to believe that Iran already has some number of functional nuclear weapons hidden away in some number of places within that country.

Haven’t read all the Comments, but the current B-2 move is apparently to Guam (nowhere near the Middle East), and some 6 B-2s were moved to Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean a month or so ago. So we’ve already got them in position. Diego is close enough to Iran that the B-2s can fly there and back without refueling.
