Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney spins a tale of Automaker Stellantis temporarily shutting down auto plants in Canada and Mexico as an outcome of President Trump’s tariffs. Unfortunately, the gaslighting by Carney might work on less intellectual SnowMexicans, but it fails here.
Stellantis, an EU centered auto company who sell Dodge, Ram (made in Mexico) and Dodge, Durango (made in Canada), have been in a deepening crisis for over a year as a result of poor brand management, poor development and weak North American sales. In short, their cars and trucks are not selling, that’s why the CEO quit in December, and they fired and replaced the North American leadership team. It has nothing to do with Trump’s auto tariffs against Mexico and Canada.
That said, Mark Carney used the Stellantis plant closing (Windsor) as cover to announce that Canada would match the auto-tariffs with a 25% countervailing duty against all U.S. made cars and trucks. [Prompted]
This approach only raises the ceiling for the U.S. tariffs against Canada. Quite frankly, I’m not sure why President Trump would continue to play this game with Carney and should (for the sake of simplicity) just cancel all trade with Canada and begin an immediate embargo and border blockade.
Tell the Carney clown to stay at home, shut it all down and let the Canadians live as a sovereign nation under the rule and regulation of the EU while they continue to destroy their energy resources and import foreign workers. It’s silly to keep entertaining Canada as if they really matter.
If it wasn’t for the national security threat they could represent on our border, Canada would likely get little policy attention from any administration. The Trudeau/Carney’s of the world are just annoying now. Sorry Canada, but this Carney guy is even worse than the last Prime Minister. They won’t even say “USMCA” because it’s Trump or something. Many are extremely well-run, and have very talented geologists, engineers.
Plus they have very good source rock in Alberta and neighboring provinces.

Trump said today he is open for negotiations on the tariffs. I think he will end up putting a 10 to 15% flat tariff on all goods coming into this country from and foreign source. A 20% tariff on autos. And a 50% tariff on goods that we need to mfg in this country for national security. I don’t see the tariffs on autos being dropped because we need for cars/trucks to be mfg. In America to bring back those jobs.
I think most would see my tariff numbers as being reasonable. We know some countries use other ways to restrict our goods without calling it a tariff. That 15% across the board tariff would account for that.
As long as China stays high, I could live with negotiating with other countries. This is our one chance to send them into a complete tailspin.
I will add that I much prefer tariffs to individual income taxes for low to moderate earners. So much easier to manage and oversee and a huge burden lifted off of the general public.
President Trump should be very wary of china as they don’t play nice. Remember last time around ’19.

Well, if the EU leaders are forced to implement austeriity measures on their people, because they can no longer take advantage of US on trade and defence, and use the billions they have stolen from us, to buy the votes and complacency of their populations, they will be voted out, and Nationalist/ Populist Gov. will be voted in, with whom we can have generous bi-lateral trade agreements,…and once one falls, they all fall and no more EU troublemakers, trying to start a war with Russia.
Russia in turn helps us with Iran, and aligns against China, where economic rather than military “force” also collapses their conmunist system, just like the Soviet Union.

Sounds good on paper but in the real world of egos wanting power, greed, blackmail, and all that goes with jockeying for power among nations, and the Muslim migration, for your whole board picture to fall in place, too many things have happen in a vacuum and have to be perfect.
If the stock mkt. continues to roil, Trump will have to do something to calm it and get it trending up. Also, if we go into a recession, the dems will capture the house and senate in midterms.

I think Trump is doing all this to leverage his negotiating position on trade. I do believe he will get the USA a better deal than we now have. That will settle wall street, bring in more mfg. For us, and he can move forward with the other priorities of deporting illegals, arresting and prosecuting the RICO political crime family uncovered by DOGE, balancing the budget, lowering taxes, and ending the Ukraine/Russia war. But this tariff situation MUST be settled quickly as it is a global economic firestorm.

One of the very first bills that President Washington signed was a “tariff” bill. (Literally: [almost?] the first bill that the nascent Congress ever approved …)
The most ridiculous(!) about “tariffs,” from the American perspective, is that from the 1970’s we essentially stopped collecting them. (Well, there was also “the Marshall Plan,” which somebody apparently forgot to cancel.) Oh, yes … we paid those tariffs, but we didn’t think to reciprocate. We naïvely created things like “GATT” which were utter nonsense!
So – in this well-published “table of tariffs” – there is a consistently missing column. The tariff rates were generally computed as “50% of” the tariffs that these countries impose upon our exports. For years and years and years, we paid these tariffs, but never collected them in kind!

This is the expected reaction, really. The EU is also shaking their fists and vowing to raise tariffs to the moon. They can’t imagine a world where the US isn’t funding their dead-end lives. Prices will be coming down. Crude oil down what; $4 to $5 a barrel today? That affects the pump, the grocery store, the farmer’s costs, heating & cooling the home. We’ve stopped killing egg laying chickens. The list goes on. Imagine the money freed up with no taxes on SS or incomes of 150k or less. Our economy is about to explode. Americans will make a good living again. Owning a house will once again be the American dream. There may be a few bumps in the road. We’ll make adjustments. US to the moon & yes Mars!

My son and I just had a piece published in the American Thinker which supports what Sundance has been pointing out, that under a system of reciprocal tariffs, trade-surplus countries lose when they respond with counter-tariffs. They can, however, bring down the US tariff rate on their products by negotiating an agreement with Trump to import more from the U.S. We gave Vietnam as an example:
