While rescue workers still attempt to find access points into some of the most devastated towns and communities of Eastern Tennessee and Western North Carolina, Joe Biden was in Greenville, South Carolina today for a briefing [SEE HERE]. There remains a worrisome absence of overall federal action when overlaid to the scale of the problem.
Day #6 and 7 are generally fraught with anxiety and the sense of being overwhelmed when contrast against the tasks at hand. It is understandable that PTSD would begin to settle in the psyche of those in the hardest hit areas. We have many friends in the region and send our deepest prayers of support and assistance to those in need. You are not alone.
On Tuesday, I-40 was reopened east of Asheville, but I-40 at mile marker 3 in Haywood County will remain closed indefinitely.
Both I-40 East and West are closed from mile marker 432 in Tennessee east to mile marker 3 in North Carolina. I-40 West is closed starting at mile marker 3 in North Carolina west through mile marker 435 in Tennessee, according to TDOT.
While the major thoroughfare is closed for the foreseeable future, there are ways around it.
Interstate 81 offers a bypass to I-40. Those in the Northwest section of Western North Carolina, can look for a safe route to I-81 into Tennessee which connects with Interstate 77, providing an alternate route to other areas in North Carolina.
Those in the Southwest part of the state can still travel on part of Interstate 26, but sections of the road may be closed. People can also seek out safe routes to Interstate 85 and then head Northbound to the Charlotte area.
Those south of Hendersonville can take U.S. 74 ALT to U.S. 74 East toward Shelby and then connect with I-85 to Charlotte and other points North and East.
U.S. 64 to U.S. 74 ALT just north of Hendersonville is impassable at this time due to landslides. The road is also impassable between U.S. 74 ALT and Slick Rock Road according to NCDOT. (link)

Grindstone Ministries has called for trained cadaver dogs and more volunteers (sob).
Private helicopters have been flying in and out of remote places doing rescues.
Many, many, private individuals have taken their chainsaws and 4x4s and are cutting their way through.
A pack mule group has assembled and loaded up supplies to get through difficult areas.
People have been going in on horseback, taking in supplies, making assessments, and bringing whomever they can out.
In our little town, every church, the Feed Store, and private individuals have been taking donations, and continue to fill trucks and horse trailers to bring as many supplies as they can to the affected areas. This is happening across the state.
Our area Costco is out of toilet paper and water (Middle TN).
An area weather station has become a “relay” to communicate needs to the general public so that people know what is needed, and to communicate to family and friends. Many more are doing the same.
Hundreds of StarLink panels have been erected with free service so that people can communicate with their cell phones – however, they need to reboot their phone (if it still has power…) to connect.
The water system that fed an entire county (Greene County, I think) is under repair, but it’s going to take a long time to fix it.
Many private individuals have brought supplies, food, and set up grills and other equipment to offer fresh, hot food, to workers and survivors.
Some organizations have set up showering stations and a place to wash clothes.
Looting has begun and people are strapped.
Factoid: the force of the water that came down those mountains was over twice the force of Niagra Falls. There is nothing that can compare to what has happened and there is no historical record to compare it to.

Thanks for the interesting article and I don’t doubt it a bit. However, Kings Mountain was not affected anywhere near as bad as the Western North Carolina Mountains. Kings Mountain, NC is off Hwy 85 between Spartanburg, SC and Gastonia, NC. They sustained about the same damage as we did in upstate SC with downed trees and power lines and now homes without power or Internet. Very little major flooding like they’re seeing in Western NC. Again, I’m not saying Kings Mountain was not affected but it isn’t part of the area that suffered catastrophic, biblical flooding. With that said, I do know that area has been fighting against the lithium mines and I’m ashamed to say that my government would do anything to access that resource.

I live in the greater Kansas City metro area. Costco (last night) was completely out of toilet paper, paper towels, and kleenex, and almost out of bottled water. Shelf stocks in the dry food aisles at floor level were noticeably lower than normal. Employee said people were stocking up due to the strike. Most of the bridges are still out so we are kind of stuck in a hamster wheel unless we drive miles out of the way. The hamster wheel interior is quickly running out of supplies.

I finally broke down last night and drove 50 miles west to pay over $200 that I cannot afford, for a hotel room one night (every hotel in a 200 mile radius is charging at that level, even dumpy ones and that’s only if the have a vacancy)

We still have to go to work, those of us who still have a job to go to.
As it is, half of my staff can’t get out so the rest of us are working overtime trying to assist increasingly desperate customers.

The problem is what lies between. People stuck in Hartford & Grassy Fork TN (right at NC border) aren’t going anywhere. The people in Cocke County (towns of Newport & Cosby) have no municipal water & the entirety of the huge county is under a boil alert. Remember this county is mountainous with very rural populations. Trying to travel thru small unincorporated areas like Point Pleasant & Bybee is impossible without proper height clearance & you definitely need a 4×4 with wench. This is the county where I40 is closed beginning at MM 432.
Further north, off I81, at MM 23 lies a great headache of trying to access Greeneville, part of Greene county – also very hard hit. All the back roads from Bulls Gap & Mosheim are treacherous with people in the hollers not being able to get out.
This is truly a “Biblical Proportions” catastrophe.
