While rescue workers still attempt to find access points into some of the most devastated towns and communities of Eastern Tennessee and Western North Carolina, Joe Biden was in Greenville, South Carolina today for a briefing [SEE HERE]. There remains a worrisome absence of overall federal action when overlaid to the scale of the problem.
Day #6 and 7 are generally fraught with anxiety and the sense of being overwhelmed when contrast against the tasks at hand. It is understandable that PTSD would begin to settle in the psyche of those in the hardest hit areas. We have many friends in the region and send our deepest prayers of support and assistance to those in need. You are not alone.
On Tuesday, I-40 was reopened east of Asheville, but I-40 at mile marker 3 in Haywood County will remain closed indefinitely.
Both I-40 East and West are closed from mile marker 432 in Tennessee east to mile marker 3 in North Carolina. I-40 West is closed starting at mile marker 3 in North Carolina west through mile marker 435 in Tennessee, according to TDOT.
While the major thoroughfare is closed for the foreseeable future, there are ways around it.
Interstate 81 offers a bypass to I-40. Those in the Northwest section of Western North Carolina, can look for a safe route to I-81 into Tennessee which connects with Interstate 77, providing an alternate route to other areas in North Carolina.
Those in the Southwest part of the state can still travel on part of Interstate 26, but sections of the road may be closed. People can also seek out safe routes to Interstate 85 and then head Northbound to the Charlotte area.
Those south of Hendersonville can take U.S. 74 ALT to U.S. 74 East toward Shelby and then connect with I-85 to Charlotte and other points North and East.
U.S. 64 to U.S. 74 ALT just north of Hendersonville is impassable at this time due to landslides. The road is also impassable between U.S. 74 ALT and Slick Rock Road according to NCDOT. (link)

I-81 from Wytheville, VA south is usually pretty smooth sailing. The I-77/I-81 split at Fort Chiswell, if you’re travelling northbound on I-77, can be a backed-up b*tch in the best of circumstances, however. The extra traffic from this massive multistate detour will likely make this worse.
The DriveNC.gov map posted at the top of the page is egregiously incorrect. I-77 continues northward from Wytheville, NOT I-81.
I-81 continues northeasterly from Wytheville (and Ft. Chiswell) to Roanoke, VA and beyond.
I have travelled that route many many times going back to New jersey from Florida. Plus my son went to school at Washington and Lee in Lexington Va, so I am very familiar with those roads. Wytheville and Ft Chiswell are just gorgeous.
I drove Kingsport TN via 81 to Wytheville then south on 77 on Saturday with no issues at all.
Its just a feature of how the Interstate system is set up Elks Mann. Interstates ending in an odd number are considered North South no matter their actual points on the compass. Interstates ending in even (and zero is considered even) are East West. Such as I40 East bound is closed at Tn/Bc border.
I live near Gaffney Sc…that first 20 miles of I-85 from the NC line to Spartanburg is reminds me of how livestock must feel on their last walk to the slaughterhouse. Drive cautiously and do not tailgate!! There are several accidents on that stretch of road daily. The lanes are tight and require full attention. God Bless.

Sounds like the same man you did a video whose young son was his co-pilot. They got an older woman out. The pilot/dad left his son due to weight concerns with the older woman’s husband while he flew her to safety with the intention to return for the older man.
When he was dropping the woman off he was told by some other LE he could not return for his son or the older man. He told whoever was stopping him he was going back for his
son.
He did return to get his co-pilot son and was devastated he had to tell the older man he could not take him to safety.
I hope the older man got airlifted to safety and met up with his spouse.

During the devastating overland floods in the Dakotas and Minnesota in the 1990s this is what happened: within a couple of days of the crest, all of the farm ladies were doing what they had done for well over a century. They were emptying their freezers and their cupboards, hauling everything into the churches in those towns, firing things up to begin feeding all the population and the emergency workers for as long as necessary.
As soon as the Red cross arrived, they began notifying all of those ladies that those kitchens had to be shut down: they were not certified kitchens according to Red Cross standards, and the ladies would not be allowed to either prepare or serve meals, sandwiches, snacks, or anything out of those kitchens. All food was to be disposed of, and the kitchens were to put under the operating authority of the Red Cross.
That lasted for about as long as it took a couple of the ladies to get on the CB to their husbands who were out fighting the water. The word got around. And a whole bunch of those beef-fed and hard-work-STRONG men showed up and explained to the Red Cross workers that they should really just leave town and go back where they came from. NOW.
They did.
Apparently those farmers had a great deal of confidence in their wives, sisters, nieces, aunts, mothers, and grandmas….and their ability to prepare food for no matter how many people without poisoning them.
The GMO organizations seem to be run by idiots and self-important know-nothings.

Latest report I just finished watching was from an individual on the ground who says the Black Hawk helicopters are still grounded and according to his source were still waiting on “Title 10” clearance. This same person is claiming their rescue operations are being stymied by local law enforcement, especially at Lake Lure. Police allegedly refused to let CNN film there today and refused them access.
Anyway, sounds like there are still many stuck in the mountains awaiting help and this pilot said he’s flying the rivers with his own personal helicopter then scanning up the mountains and hills looking for SOS and HELP signs.

f you are wondering why citizens are being turned away that are coming to help NC and TN – you’ll want to hear my experience as someone who has been doing this as a private citizen for almost a decade.
I was able to get into, and out of Asheville. We brought food, water, fuel and other supplies as well as helped people affected by the floods, but there are reasons why they are not allowing outside help.
I cannot confirm the reasons why in NC, but i can tell you the reasons in other storms i have worked – i’ll explain below.
Let me share with you the first disaster area that i finally realized that this was all about money.
In the FL Keys with Hurricane Irma, after Texas got hit with Harvey, we finished our efforts in Texas and were the first citizen team to make it to Key Largo.
The federal agencies had US1 shut down just South of Key Largo and wouldn’t let anyone in or out, even though the road was okay to pass.
We explained to them that we had boats, Jet skis, food, water, chainsaws and fuel to bring these people.
They didn’t care and wouldn’t let us in.
It was night by that point and you rarely saw the lights of vehicles in the distance on the individual keys, meaning the emergency response teams from FEMA weren’t even working, it was all quiet.
We decided that we would go in anyways.
We filled up the boats and jet skis with all that we could reasonably carry and went by water, around all their BS blockades and around their law enforcement presence on the water.
It was 87 miles by water to get to our first stop, Cudjoe Key and Sugarloaf Key.
When we arrived there we were greeted by a homeowner (for privacy, I won’t name him, though we have video) who was elated to see us and all the supplies we brought, his house was in shambles.
We started offloading supplies on the shoreline and helping to get them into what was left of his house.
During that process, he explained to us that FEMA had set up a command center at a local high school on the island, but that they weren’t doing anything to help the residents, not even bringing them WATER!
Instead, he explained that they were driving around using a loudspeaker, telling people to stay in their homes. They weren’t even helping the home owners with supplies.
I was skeptical at first while he was telling me all of this, but then he said something that broke my heart….
He told us that the people of the keys were all in despair, because they had just seen, weeks before, the overwhelming support for Texas with Hurricane Harvey, by the citizens of this country. He, and his neighbors on all of the keys, felt like Americans had forgotten about them completely, because at this point, FIVE DAYS after landfall, all they had seen was FEMA, and they were of NO HELP.
The residents were cut off from the outside world, no cellular, no internet, no way to contact anyone or hear of any efforts to try to help them.
The ONLY communication they had was from a local radio station on Sugarloaf Key, that was broadcasting on AM to the surrounding keys.
The man, after hearing that there were citizens trying to bring them help, but being refused entry by federal law enforcement was visibly upset. He, and his neighbors, really thought the country had abandoned them.
He insisted that we get into his waterlogged truck and that he would take us to that radio station so that we could go live on air, to tell the citizens trapped in the Keys that we, the American people, were there to help and that the government was trying to stop our efforts.
And that is exactly what we did.
After that, we were determined to help as many people as we could, but we were met with red tape throughout the whole process and time we were in the keys.
We finally we able to talk some authorities to let us down to the Faro Blanco Resort in Marathon towards the end of Boot Key. This was the same hotel where state and local authorities were staging their personnel and they were happy to see us.
I was able to coordinate several trucks full of supplies to be brought down to the EOC in Marathon. I was privy to the EOC meeting, BUT was informed in that meeting, that all of the semi trucks full of food, water and hygiene supplies were to be turned around and not allowed to be offloaded for distribution by the EOC.
THE REASON they gave us, was that these donations were not from companies on their “preferred vendors list” and that they would not accept them or give them to the residents of the keys impacted by the storm.
It was at that point that I realized, this is ALL ABOUT MONEY.
These ‘preferred vendors” are getting part of the money being released by the state and federal govt for each disaster. In turn, some of the “vendors” make it on the list because a friend gets them on the list, and in return for getting ridiculously outlandish amounts of compensation for the services they render, they give kickbacks.
So accepting outside donations, even though they are on location and can help people NOW, they would rather let people suffer so they can get their kickbacks.
This meeting solidified my resolve to help these people, regardless of what the greedy officials wanted, we were going to feed the lower keys that were being neglected.
I diverted ALL SEMI TRUCKS to the Faro Blanco Resort in Marathon and filled the entire first floor with pallets upon pallets of food, water and essential supplies and created a food pantry for residents to come and get anything, and however much they needed.
From local state troopers to the homeless, all were given wheel barrels and free reign to get anything they needed.
We also delivered supplies down to Big Pine Key. We helped establish the tent city on Big Pine Key. Big companies like Titos Vodka and Whelen just kept bringing trucks full of everything that was needed. When FEMA FINALLY started handing out boxes of canned goods (limited to one per household), we were filing cars full of food and supplies for people and pets.
There is so much more to the story in the Keys and further from there in other storms we worked- the common theme though, is that the federal government always tries to keep citizens from helping and the local authorities, the ones that live and work in the area are always happy to have outside help.
I call out to Elon Musk and anyone else who can monetarily help people like myself and those that work with me, who have the knowledge and the will to help those devastated by these disasters.
Help us side step the red tape and get the people the relief they need.

Power substation repairs have been completed in Saluda NC. (10 Miles south of Hendersonville NC on I-26). Tree clearing crews for the power company have arrived today. Power only for Nursing homes so far. City water has found additional broken pipes so water is OFF. Cell service began working again today. Columbus NC to our south (10 miles-lower elevation) has power in central city areas and some services are working. (Banks, Food Lion fast food). US 176 between Columbus and top of mountain (Saluda) have had major mudslide zones and the road will not be open for some time. Neighbors helping neighbors have kept people in Saluda active and resilient. NC Government is a waste–they have No Plan or organization. Crews coming into area in some areas are standing around looking for orders. Mountain towns notoriously don’t get huge amounts of rain so guess what these people who have homes up there don’t have… Flood insurance. But guess, what is there/…one of the biggest lithium caches in the world and probably the biggest quartz mine in the world both of which they use to make the batteries and the microchips and now all of a sudden huge areas have been cleared out by this flood. residents of this area had been fighting the mining of lithium and quartz for a long time now all of a sudden that problem is gone… funny how a natural disaster always seems to turn up exactly where it’s needed. Nothing fishy there at all.

I have also read that they are shutting down efforts of volunteers who are desperately trying to get to stranded survivors or those whose lives have been lost….and confiscating supplies which have been donated.
It was suggested by someone who knows that donations of any sort should be given to churches which are set up to receive them, as it is against the law for FEMA to enter and confiscate what has been collected.
I hope this is true.

See my comment above: the Red Cross tried to shut down the farm families who stood ready to feed the townspeople and emergency workers during the 1990s overland flooding inSD/ND/MN along the Red River. They did not succeed. The damage here is far more TOTAL…and communications are pretty much totally destroyed–huge disadvantage for the locals in terms of telling the know-it-alls what they can with their procedures and policies….other than that, Same/same. Been going on a very long time.

What is US Hwy 25 north from Greenville like. That’s my usual route up to Hendersonville thru Flat Rock.
My husband and traveled that part of 25 on Tuesday this week. It is clear and not affected by flooding. We live in Brevard, NC and have no power, no water, cell service finally restored Tuesday. We went to Greenville for supplies, particularly ice. We are blessed with minor inconveniences. So much devastation and death in other areas.
If there is any silver lining to all of this it’s the timing of the year. It’s not scorching hot of July/August and there are still a couple months maybe before real bitter cold sets in. Somewhat “comfortable” outside working weather.

The Parkway is a major alternate route to get from Virginia down to Asheville and south from there.
It is also a huge economic multiplier because of the tourist traffic it generates.

Firstly, they don’t provide a source link for their following statement (particularly the “indefinitely” part):

Dang, this is all screwed up. The NC portion of the Parkway begins at milepost (MP) 217 to the north at the VA/NC state line, and ends to the south at MP 469 in Cherokee, NC.

…doesn’t translate to “indefinitely” (or “abandonment”), IMO. It means they don’t yet know when it’ll all be safe to travel yet.
I lived, until recently, about 300′ from the Parkway in SW Virginia for nearly 17 years. The NPS *always* errs on the side of caution when it comes to weather threats (rain, fog, ice, snow, wind) and weather-related damage.
Probably a liability thing, and from a liability (and personnel) standpoint, the safest, most prudent response at this time is to close the entire thing (yes, including the Moses Cone Manor and Memorial Park in Blowing Rock).
IMO, closing the NC portion preemptively, considering the massive rainfall the Blue Ridge was receiving even before Helene slogged her way up there, was an easy call.
I’d be very interested to see a source link for Newsbreak’s assertion that the Parkway will remain closed “indefinitely.”
The NC portion of the Parkway is 252 miles long, and is pretty rugged and remote in many places (understatement). The Parkway down there is likely a torn-up mess – I’ve seen it with my own eyes many, many times over the years when a storm blows through.

Rep. Cory Mills is in North Carolina trying to rescue Americans. He claims FEMA is largely MIA because it has diverted resources for immigration resettlement:
“So that’s really where the missing piece is, the Federal piece. Let’s go ahead and point out the obvious. FEMA had utilized a large majority of the personnel who should be here taking care of this to be replaced or repurposed for immigration resettlement when we need to be focused on Americans.”
