Sunday October 18th – Open Thread

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. THY WILL BE DONE, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but DELIVER US FROM EVIL.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen †

    The Way to Heaven

Perhaps you have heard the story of the man who inquired from a mountaineer the way to a certain destination.

The mountaineer stuttered and stammered and finally said: “You can’t get there from here.”

We may smile at this, but the results would be even more amusing — and sad — were we to ask the average person on the street the way to heaven.

What is the way to heaven? It is interesting to read in God’s Word what many think about this.
    In Proverbs 14:12 we read:

“There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.”

What are some of these “ways” that “seem right” to men, leading them to hope for heaven? Joining a church? Being baptized? Doing one’s best? Keeping the Ten Commandments? Loving one’s neighbor as himself? These are a few of the ways that men follow, hoping to gain eternal life, but they all come under one heading: “Do good.”

But what do the Scriptures say about this? In the Gospel according to John there are recorded for us seven “I ams,” which the Lord Jesus Christ used in speaking of Himself.
One of these is found in John 14:6:

“I am the way, the truth and the life; no man cometh unto the Father but by Me.”

This passage has a double significance, since it was not only the declaration of the Lord Jesus Christ, but at the same time a declaration of the divinely inspired Scriptures. From this verse we learn not only that Jesus is the only way to the Father, but also that He is “the truth” to be believed and trusted in. Thus we can believe the Lord Jesus when He claims to be the way to heaven.

But according to this passage He is also “the life.” As we place our faith in Him as the One who died on the cross for us, we receive eternal life. “He died that we might live.”

Proverbs 14:12 There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

    1 Corinthians 15:1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.

    3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Galatians 1:6 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:
7 Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.

8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.

When I’m in the truck driving I often livestream and listen to IHeart. That particular song came up on the Classic Vinyl rotation that I often listen to. When not listening to IHeart I livestream https://newstalk1290.com/

I also listen to audio books.

All the above make the miles melt away more quickly and listening to music as a drive through the wee hours of the morning helps keep me awake. Though sometimes I will listen to George Noory if he has something on that interests me.

The most dangerous time on the road driving for me is from 01:00 to 04:00 because I have to prevent myself from having “microsleeps”. Livestreaming music and coffee helps a great deal. Massaging ones scalp, stretching, and looking off to the side to ward off white line fever all help. Now that it is getting colder, opening the window and getting a blast of cold night air is back on the menu of tricks I have to keep me alert. The other thing I do is never eat a big meal before starting a driving shift. Snacks only. The big meal of the day is only taken after my driving shift before I lay down, no matter what time it is or how hungry I feel.

    THE KEY TO MISSIONARY DEVOTION

“For His name’s sake they went forth.” 3 John 7

Our Lord has told us how love to Him is to manifest itself. “Lovest thou Me?” “Feed My sheep” – identify yourself with My interests in other people, not, identify ME with YOUR interests in other people. 1 Corinthians xiii. 4-8 gives the character of this love, it is the love OF GOD expressing itself. The test of my love for Jesus is the practical one, all the rest is sentimental jargon.

Loyalty to Jesus Christ is the supernatural work of Redemption wrought in me by the Holy Ghost Who sheds abroad the love of God in my heart, and that love works efficaciously through me in contact with everyone I meet. I remain loyal to His Name although every common-sense fact gives the lie to Him, and declares that He has no more power than a morning mist.

The key to missionary devotion means being attached to nothing and no one saving Our Lord Himself, not being detached from things externally. Our Lord was amazingly in and out among ordinary things; His detachment was on the inside towards God. External detachment is often an indication of a secret vital attachment to the things we keep away from externally.

The loyalty of a missionary is to keep his soul concentratedly open to the nature of the Lord Jesus Christ. The men and women Our Lord sends out on His enterprises are the ordinary human stuff, plus dominating devotion to Himself wrought by the Holy Ghost.

ATTN ADMINSTRATION. I am posting this request to administration hoping that they can assist me. I tried sending a message via your email address and haven’t received an answer …. I think it’s possible that my email didn’t get through to you. I have been visiting your site for several years without any problem and even have posted a couple of times using the screen name Servant.

Here’s my problem. Since clearing the cookies on my desktop computer earlier this month I can only see your posts up through October 5th. I’m wondering if clearing the cookies may have adversely affected my password (Wolverines) that I adopted back in July when you had the Treepers begin using that password. Here is what happens now when I attempt to go on your web site:

    https://theconservativetreehouse.wpcomstaging.com/

Perhaps you can tell me why the wpcomstaging occurs which allows me only to see your posts through October 5th.

The only way I can successfully get on your website, as I am right now, is to go on your Twitter page and click on one of your posts that takes me directly to your current page on your website. Many thanks, in advance, for any help you can give me to alleviate this problem.

I am so thankful that my post here today (and after today’s post, I also sent the same message via their email address) was the ticket to getting this fixed. Our Old Testament reading for the 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time:

“Thus says the Lord to his anointed, Cyrus, whose right hand I grasp subduing nations before him, and making kings run in his service, opening doors before him and leaving the gates unbarred: For the sake of Jacob, my servant, of Israel, my chosen one, I have called you by your name, giving you a title, though you knew me not. I am the Lord and there is not other, there is no God besides me. It is I who arm you, though you know me not, so that toward the risingand the setting of the sun people may know that there is none besides me. I am the Lord, there is no other.”
    Isaiah 45:1, 4-6

Trump is our Cyrus! I am not sure what his relationship with God was or is currently, but I believe he sees his need for God and that true Christians support him. Please pray this Scripture for our President in the coming days. Thank God for him and his family. Pray for our country.

Amen! I agree wholeheartedly with all you say! I have been a believer since I was five-years-old and I am now 70. I have seen the Lord do wondrous miracles in my lifetime, but I must say that His preparing and placing President Trump (the new Cyrus) in the White House is the most incredible miracle I’ve ever witnessed. I am in awe of our Savior’s longsuffering with us! How wonderful to be alive at this time in history to see the Lord’s great mercy to our nation! We deserve only judgment, but the Lord is merciful in His judgment of our great sins! We must continue to pray the Lord’s protection over our good leaders and their families! I also pray that the Holy Spirit will draw these individuals to Himself and that all that are lost will come to know Him as their Savior. And we must vote in person to assure that President Trump is re-elected!
