Biden abandons Israel to appease student rioters and help Hamas survive
The mask is off: President Joe Biden has now made it clear that if Israel moves into the southern Gazan city of Rafah in order to destroy Hamas’s last batallion of soldiers as well as its leadership, he will stop sending Israel major shipments of ammunition and bombs.
First, this action proves that Biden has never really wanted Hamas destroyed. Though he has appeared to support Israel from the beginning of this war, he has also been somewhat two-faced about that support. Throughout the war, beginning almost immediately after October 7th, he has continually applied pressure on Israel to slow or even stop its effort, while in the background he has continued to funnel money and aid to Hamas.
Second, by this decision Biden is meekly appeasing the student pro-Hamas rioters on college campuses. They want Hamas saved and Israel destroyed, and have been protesting violently in order to influence Biden and the Democrats to apply pressure on Israel to stop its offensive. Biden has now bowed to that pressure.
Expect those riots to not only continue, but to escalate. You appease bullies and that only encourages them to be bigger bullies.
Third, Biden has now demonstrated that he — and the Democrats — have a very distorted view of the public’s opinion of this war. The public remains horrified to its core with what Hamas did on October 7th, and supports unwaveringly Israel’s effort to destroy it. By allowing the pressure from the U.S. Muslim community and the radical academic community to influence him, Biden is falling into a trap of his own making.

We’ll keep it brief today, just down to the brass tacks of ongoing on-the-ground events.
In accordance with information we’ve been reporting for many months about stirrings in the north, Russia has finally launched an assault on the Kharkov region. But it’s important to clear up a lot of misconceptions about the objectives.
The assault was likely smaller than it may have sounded at first—more a recon by fire or advanced scouting party, with most of the damage being done by Russian long range fires and drones. However, it did capture half a dozen small, mostly abandoned settlements on the Ukrainian side of the border.
Since they’re motorized and not mechanized, what we saw today matched the description, as from the little footage there was, they appeared to use light vehicles only and very little armor, with some BMPs. Also, we know General Lapin is commanding the entire northern front, as I reported last time he gave a check on the units right before this attack occurred.
Opposite them is the Ukrainian 42nd Mechanized Brigade defending. The 42nd posted videos destroying some of the Russian light vehicles, which were actually geolocated to even much deeper than just the border towns that were captured.
The towns on the border were mostly in the gray zone already, so they met light resistance for the most part, though Russian sources have stated the AFU took many casualties and reportedly nearly two dozen POWs, with photos showing some of the captured troops.
The newer Ukrainian fortifications which Zelensky himself inspected north of Kharkov just a month or so ago are said to be much closer to the city itself, and so Russian forces did not have to even go near them yet.
In fact, Ukrainian sources claimed the attack merely consisted of 4-5 battalions.
The fact that this motorized regiment without much heavy gear was used is revealing. It confirms reports that Russia is no where close to introducing its “main force” into the region, which can come much later after Russia has tested the Ukrainian defenses, revealed their positions via recon-by-fire, and then softened them up with air strikes.
Ukrainian military sources report that not only does Russia possibly have a much larger force it intends to introduce later, but another one is gathering in Sumy region as well.

He’s hitting the right notes, and appealing to Ohio’s middle class, workers, and veterans.
I hate to say it, but it’s beginning to remind me of Jim Renacci’s non-campaign, where he went into seclusion, and didn’t return calls from people who wanted to help with his campaign — and then whined when he lost. I wish he’d team up with JD Vance to do some campaigning around Ohio.

Economic ground report from Las Vegas and Henderson Nevada (Insomnia edition) : I call this my fast-food economic indicators report. First off, I love most but not all of the fast food options that we have here. My own personal situation has kept me from eating out as often as I would like but I’m always observant.
What I’ve noticed here that the only fast food restaurants that are consistently busy are In-N-Out and Chic Filet. Even at peak times for lunch and dinner, I often see completely empty drive throughs. Lanes that were filled with cars as little as a year ago just aren’t now. The business just isn’t there. A Carl’s Jr. that I did used to frequent in Henderson has recently closed. The Fast Food industry is getting hit from so many sides I think hits to their stock prices are inevitable. I also think closures of a lot of individual restaurants as well multiple franchisees filing for BK is inevitable. Mind you, this is in low tax Nevada where the minimum wage will be $12.00 in July and electricity rates are only one third of those in California.
I would love to hear the thoughts of my fellow Treepers here on what you are noticing about fast food or any other industry in your areas as well.

Fast food is a luxury item now, and most cannot afford it. I recently paid for a take home and bake pizza from Papa Murphy’s that was pitiful. It cost an arm and a leg, size large, and was supposed to be the works, but the first two inches in from the edge had zip, zero, nada on them, then started the sauce, and about one more inch in the cheese and other toppings. I will never do that again, and I told them so, so they sent me a coupon for x off my next purchase if I bought more from them within the next 30 days. Not a single sorry, we’ll do better. Nothing. THEY ARE OBVIOUSLY BRAIN DEAD.
I could have bought big fat delicious lobsters at the grocery store for two with money to spare.

There is an In-N-Out very close to me. The drive through lane is always backed up and long. I’m in Northern California. Chic Filet is on same major road across the street, also is busy.
Am noticing the same thing up here in the Reno area, even the local Pizza Hut and Subway’s are hurting and the local McDonalds which shares half a building with a Chevron repainted the building to gray and the only way to recognize that the McDonalds is still there is because the very small signs over the pickup window side of the building says it’s a McDonalds. Up the street the local Taco Bell is open but absolutely no lit signage to say it’s open and the only cars in that parking lot look to be employee cars.
Haven’t been to any casino buffets lately but did notice an uptick in local casinos advertising loose slots (which aren’t) and pushing the buffets in their commercials. Hadn’t seen casinos advertising to the locals in quite a while since they usually play to the northern California markets so sounds like they are now going to refocus on the locals a bit more.

Ah, Portland…I lived there from 1967-1971. It was a beautiful city then. Reed College was always a pocket of insanity but the rest of the city was pretty nice. Went go high school there, got my first car, etc.

It is a trap – that’s the communists holy grail, get a constitutional convention and cut our Constitution to shreds – there is absolutely no provision to limit any topic or proposed changes in the structure of such a convention.
I overheard conversations on just that premise by a bunch of lefties back in the late 1960’s as my older sister would have me tag along so I heard a lot of college communist (make peace not war) hippies in those days making their plans, become teachers to teach the youth, get jobs in the government to subvert the powerful, but holding – and controlling – a constitutional convention was always at the top of their list, and having watched how their plans have unfold over the decades, and so just one goal left,
and look how they are doing it – getting people angry at their government, both left, right, and in-between, the top-down ploy, get the people at the bottom screaming for the top people, the government, to fix things, now using neoconservatives (the Mark Levin’s of the world) to plant the idea of a constitutional convention into the minds of desperate conservatives and get the left’s enemies to demand the left’s ploy be put in action.
No, it is a trap. Think about it.

Kaspersky, in collaboration with Telit and based on a thorough analysis of the technical details, assigned it a severity score of 8.8 out of the maximum 10. However, NIST’s assessment is that the issue has critical impact and received a severity score of 9.8.
Attackers exploiting the flaw via specially crafted SMS (text) messages could trigger the vulnerability and execute arbitrary code remotely on the modem without requiring authentication.
“The vulnerabilities we found, coupled with the widespread deployment of these devices in various sectors, highlight the potential for extensive global disruption,” says Evgeny Goncharov, head of Kaspersky ICS CERT.
Goncharov notes that because the modems are embedded in other solutions, it is a challenge to determine which products are impacted.
This article and links in it are prime examples of companies and governments not wanting to spend the money on just basic system security. I speak from personal experience.

To use the language of recent political campaigns, our oligarchs try to rig the system to defend their wealth. They focus on lowering taxes and on reducing regulations that protect workers and citizens from corporate wrongdoing.
They build a legal system that is skewed to work in their favor, so that their illegal behavior rarely gets punished. And they sustain all of this through a campaign finance and lobbying system that gives them undue influence over policy. In a civil oligarchy, these actions are sustained not at the barrel of the gun or by the word of one man, but through the rule of law. If oligarchy works because its leaders institutionalize their power through law, media, and political rituals [i.e., “elections”], what is to be done? How can democracy ever gain the upper hand? Winters notes that political power depends on economic power. This suggests that one solution is creating a more economically equal society.
The problem, of course, is that if the oligarchs are in charge, it isn’t clear why they would pass policies that would reduce their wealth [or power – W] and make society more equal. As long as they can keep the people divided, they have little to fear from the occasional pitchfork or protest.

A great deal of empirical research speaks to the policy influence of one or another set of actors, but until recently it has not been possible to test these contrasting theoretical predictions against each other within a single statistical model. We report on an effort to do so, using a unique data set that includes measures of the key variables for 1,779 policy issues.
Multivariate analysis indicates that economic elites and organized groups representing business interests have substantial independent impacts on U.S. government policy, while average citizens and mass-based interest groups have little or no independent influence. The results provide substantial support for theories of Economic-Elite Domination and for theories of Biased Pluralism, but not for theories of Majoritarian Electoral Democracy or Majoritarian Pluralism.
In the United States, our findings indicate, the majority does not rule—at least not in the causal sense of actually determining policy outcomes.
When a majority of citizens disagrees with economic elites or with organized interests, they generally lose. Moreover, because of the strong status quo bias built into the U.S. political system [that describes the overwhelming influence of the administrative state and lobbyists – W], even when fairly large majorities of Americans favor policy change, they generally do not get it.
To be sure, this does not mean that ordinary citizens always lose out; they fairly often get the policies they favor, but only because those policies happen also to be preferred by the economically-elite citizens who wield the actual influence.

Congressional Democrats insist that the SAVE Act—which requires proof of citizenship to establish eligibility to vote in federal elections—is unnecessary because federal law (18 USC § 611) already prohibits non-citizens from voting in federal elections.
Those making this argument ignore a glaring problem: the government officials who register voters and conduct federal elections aren’t allowed to require proof of citizenship.

From the war in Ukraine to the horrific terror attack on Oct. 7 and the subsequent conflict in the Middle East to the roiling waters of the South China Sea, the world today is in crisis. The causes are not found in Moscow or Tehran alone, but primarily in Washington and Beijing. They are the consequence of two fundamental and interrelated grand strategic mistakes made by the U.S. First, the failure to understand the threat from the People’s Republic of China. Second, the failure to balance against it. As a result, the U.S. is at risk of losing its dominant position to an emboldened PRC working in cooperation with Vladimir Putin’s Russia and the mullahs in Iran. Surveying the global unrest, Americans must comprehend three reasons why they face this dire strategic landscape.
First, U.S. elites did not perceive the threat due to the triumphalism of the “End of History” – the false assertion that modernizing nations like China were on the path to democratization and free market economics. Great power conflict was seen as an artifact of the past. This hubris contributed to what we term “threat deflation,” where year after year U.S. decision-makers consistently dismissed or underestimated the threat from the PRC.
Second, U.S. business interests and financiers indefatigably sought economic gain from cooperation with Beijing. This facilitated China’s rise as it entered the West’s economic ecosystem, as did its admission to the World Trade Organization.
Their influence on the major U.S. political parties and at the highest levels of U.S. politics hindered the U.S. response and promoted the conceit of globalization. Thus emerged an “engagement school,” which asserted that by engaging the PRC, it would become wealthy, a “responsible stakeholder” in the international order, and even democratic. In essence, the U.S. willingly and enthusiastically taught, trained, and even equipped, its mortal enemy. Business interests and financiers funded our national security think tanks which contributed to a bias towards the engagement school, and thus to the threat deflation of the PRC.
Third, Deng Xiaoping, arguably one of the greatest strategists of the 20th century, advanced a brilliant political warfare strategy to promote threat deflation. Deng’s strategy focused on U.S. and other Western elites, enriching them, and shaping their perception of the PRC and of the Chinese Communist Party, while using the enticement of a growing market to influence their behavior. For a generation, Chinese leaders masked their intentions and framed their expansion as economic, for the good of all, rather than strategic and for the benefit of the CCP.
Consequently, the PRC has risen and now employs its power to the detriment of U.S. national security through its worldwide actions, especially in the East and South China Seas and Taiwan, as well as through its proxies in Iran and Russia.
