Wednesday April 8th – Open Thread

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. THY WILL BE DONE, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but DELIVER US FROM EVIL.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen †

Very true, Linda. Wish I could give it 2 stars. Parents have to walk such a fine line when it comes to getting their kids to understand money. You see some kids, like this one, who feel like they should renounce it…and then others that get so crazy materialistic that you wonder what’s going on in their little souls. I don’t know if she’s listening or not but I tell my daughter that money is absolutely crucial for 1) Safety 2) Freedom and 3) the ability to be Generous with the people you care about…whether it’s family; friends who are like family to you; or orphans halfway around the world. I tell her luxuries are pretty cool too as long they give you real pleasure, and aren’t just acquired to impress others.

Something I think is being overlooked in all this craziness, is how many adult children are being denied access to their parents.
I haven’t seen my Mom in 3 & 1/2 weeks. She is physically healthy, but her mind is more scrambled eggs everyday.
She still knew my Dad, me, my daughter when all this started. By the time it’s over, who knows.
Nursing homes and Memory Care will be the last places to open, probably by weeks if not months “out of abundance of caution”.

I saw two different heartbreaking posts here today from daughters with Mothers in hospice.

      “in hospice”

In my extremely limited amount of experience on my tiny little corner of the planet over the past 3 years or so, I have not known anyone entering into Hospice care to live more than a week. The average was more like half a week. 30 years ago, some people might be in a Hospice situation for perhaps a few weeks.

There was an old George Carlin video posted here at least twice where the subject was “germs”. One of the most ironic illustrations he used was using an alcohol wipe on the arm of a death row inmate that was going to be receiving a lethal injection.

According to these “experts” at the CDC that have turned our lives upside down, the incubation period of this Wuhan virus is suppose to be 14 days. Denying visitors to Hospice patients makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, unless your a common sense deprived dingbat on the government payroll that is not accountable to anyone for your poor decision making capabilities.

    Why the Hush?

    By Pastor Ricky Kurth

“And unclean spirits, when they saw Him, fell down before Him, and cried, saying, Thou art the Son of God.

“And He straitly charged them that they should not make Him known” (Mark 3:11,12).

Have you ever wondered why the Lord did not want these “unclean spirits” to make Him known? We believe it was because He didn’t want the likes of them telling others about Him. That is, He knew that the testimony of such sinful, unclean creatures would hurt Him, not help Him. He already had enough people thinking He was “in cahoots” with devils (Matt. 12:22-24). If people heard devils testify of Him, well, that wasn’t exactly the kind of testimony He needed!

We often wonder if the Lord feels the same way today when instead of unclean spirits, unclean believers testify to others about Him. We’re not suggesting that only saints who get straight “A”s in conduct should be allowed to witness, for none of us is perfect. Nor are we saying that God can’t use the testimony of sinful men, for if He can use Balaam’s donkey to speak His words, He can certainly use carnal believers. But we can’t help but think that if God “had His druthers,” He’d much rather use a saint who has purged himself of uncleanness and is “meet for the Master’s use” (II Tim. 2:21).

We believe the same principle applies when it comes to pointing people to Paul as our apostle. In Acts 16:16, “a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination” followed Paul, saying:

“These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation.

“And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her” (v. 17,18).

What the devil was saying was true, of course, but that didn’t stop Paul from hushing the testimony being offered by such a questionable source. And so when we as grace believers try to convince our brethren that Paul alone is the servant of God that shows unto us the way of salvation in this dispensation, our testimony will be received much more readily if our lives “adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things” (Titus 2:10). Anything less would cause Paul, if he were here to see it, to be as grieved with us as he was with the damsel possessed with the spirit of divination.

Mark 3:11 And unclean spirits, when they saw him, fell down before him, and cried, saying, Thou art the Son of God.
12 And he straitly charged them that they should not make him known.

Matthew 12:22 Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw.
23 And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David?
24 But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.

2 Timothy 2:21 If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.

Acts 16:16 And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying:
17 The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation.
18 And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.

Titus 2:10 Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.

Bonnie Raitt ““The combination of being that tender and that wise and that astute, mixed with his homespun sense of humor — it was probably the closest thing for those of us that didn’t get the blessing of seeing Mark Twain in person.”

        From Rollingstone
Prine was born in the Chicago suburb of Maywood, Illinois. His father was a tool and die maker and the president of the local steelworkers union, and raised John and his three brothers on the music of Jimmie Rodgers, the Carter Family, Hank Williams, and other heroes of Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry. Though he was a poor student, Prine was a natural songwriter; two songs he wrote when he was 14, “Sour Grapes” and “The Frying Pan,” ended up on his LP Diamonds in the Rough, more than 10 years later. Prine had a restless imagination — “I would go to class and just stare at something like a button on the teacher’s shirt,” he said — but he excelled at hobbies he focused on, like gymnastics, which he was inspired to take up by his older brother, Doug. “Here was something I had no natural ability in, and I could do it well,” Prine said.

Anyone know why those endless hills of grass?
All the forests cut down for lumber to build San Francisco and other cities?
Maybe followed up by sheep grazing for better part of a century? (tho I don’t see many sheep now)

  13. Ausonius says:

A suggestion for a Good Friday service at home, or for use any day this week:

Theodore Dubois (1837-1924) was a French composer, who created a large number of religious works, among them Les Sept Paroles Du Christ (The Seven Last Words of Christ). The title is misleading, as “seven last statements” would be more appropriate. The text is derived from Saint Jerome’s translation of the Bible into Latin. For decades it was performed regularly throughout Christendom, in both Catholic and Protestant churches, during Lent and especially in Holy Week. If you have not heard of it, the reason lies in the unfortunate decade of the 1960’s. As with many great religious works from our Catholic musical heritage, it was mistakenly discarded back then by too many people: I have made it a tradition to play it during Holy Week in my Latin classes.

This performance by a Catholic Choir in Korea with a symphony orchestra is not to be missed!

    Part I –
    Part II –

The Seven Last Words of Christ by Théodore Dubois
O vos omnes qui transitis per viam, attendite, et videte si est dolor sicut dolor meus.Posuit me Dominus desolatam, tota die moerore confectamne vocetis me Noemi, sed vocate me Mara.
All you who travel upon the highway, pay attention to me and see if there is any sorrow like my sorrow. The Lord has treated me bitterly. Call me Naomi (pleasantness) no longer, instead call me Mara (bitterness).

    First Word
“Pater, dimitte illis, non enim sciunt, quid faciunt.”
Et dicebant omnes: “Reus est mortis, reus est mortis! Tolle, tolle, crucifige eum! Sanguis eius super nos et super filios nostros.” Crucifixerunt Jesum et latrones, unum a dextris et alterum a sinistris.

“Father, forgive them. They do not know what they are doing.”
And they all said: “He should be punished with death; take him, take him, crucify him. Let his blood be on us and on our children.” They crucified Jesus and the thieves, one at his right hand and the other at his left.

    Second Word
“Hodie mecum eris in Paradiso, amen, amen, dico tibi.”
“Domine, memento mei cum veneris in regnum tuum.”

“Amen, Amen I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”
“Lord, remember me when you enter into your kingdom.”

    Third Word
    “Mulier, ecce filius tuus.”
Stabat Mater dolorosa iuxta crucem lacrymosa, dum pendebat Filius. Quis est homo, qui non fleret, Christi Matrem si videret, in tanto supplicio?”

    “Woman, behold your Son.”
The grieving Mother stands crying at the cross, while her Son suffers punishment. Who is the person who would not weep seeing Christ’s Mother in such torment?

    Fourth Word
“Deus Meus, ut quid dereliquisti Me? Omnes amici Mei dereliquerunt Me! Praevaluerunt insidiantes Mihi! Tradidit Me quem diligebam. Vinea Mea electa, Ego te plantavi! Quomodo conversa es in amaratudine ut Me crucifigeres?”
“My God, why have you deserted Me? All of My friends have deserted Me! Those who hate Me have prevailed! The one whom I loved betrayed Me. My chosen vine, I planted you; why has your taste turned so bitter that now you crucify Me?”

    Fifth Word
Judaei praetereuntes blasphemabant eum, moventes capita sua et dicentes:“Vah! Vah! Vah! Qui destruis templum Dei, si Tu es Christus, Filius Dei, descende nunc de cruce, ut videamus et credamus Tibi. Si Tu es Rex Judaeorum, salvum Te fac.”

    “I thirst!”
The Jews who were passing by blasphemed him, shaking their heads and saying: “Bah! Bah! Bah! So You would destroy the temple of God! If you are Christ, the Son of God, come down now from the cross so that we may see it and believe in You. If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself!”

    Sixth Word
“Pater, in manus Tuas commendo spiritum Meum. Pater Meus es Tu, Deus Meus, Susceptor salutis Meae. In manus Tuas commendo spiritum Meum.”
Father, into Your hands I commend My spirit. You are My Father, My God, My Savior. Into Your hands I commend My spirit.”

    Seventh Word
Et clamans Jesus voce magna dixit: “Consummatum est!”
Et inclinato capite, tradidit spiritum. Erat autem fere hora sexta: obscuratus est sol. Et tenebrae factae sunt in universam terram! Velum templi scissum est! Omnis terra tremuit! Petrae scissa et monumenta aperta sunt.

And crying in a loud voice, Jesus said: “It is finished!”
And with His head bowed, He gave up His spirit. It was, however, the (ninth) hour. The sun was obscure and darkness covered the entire earth! The veil of the temple was torn! The entire earth trembled! Rocks split apart and tombs were opened!

    Final Prayer
Adoramus Te, Chiste, et benedicimus Tibi, quia per sanctam crucem Tuam redemisti mundum.
We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You, because by Your holy cross You have redeemed the world.

Please feel free to pass this on to others! (The translation is only partially mine: I am not sure of its origin, because it appears often, but it is accurate. Possibly it is from the published score, now in the public domain.)

In life I tend to carry sin in grief that’s hard to shake
But here I felt no weight with-in like when I am awake.
I stood in his consuming grace, completely wrapped in love.
Carried in his warm embrace that held me like a glove.
And in the mist of slumber, in the light of Christ Ablaze
All the saved in number, sang to our lord this praise.

God mine, father divine, not my will but thine.
On my knee, I give to thee, all my love God mine.

“Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into His glory?” Luke xxiv. 26

Our Lord’s Cross is the gateway into His life: His Resurrection means that He has power now to convey His life to me. When I am born again from above, I receive from the Risen Lord His very life.

Our Lord’s Resurrection destiny is to bring “many sons unto glory.” The fulfilling of His destiny gives Him the right to make us sons and daughters of God. We are never in the relationship to God that the Son of God is in; but we are brought by the Son into the relation of sonship. When Our Lord rose from the dead, He rose to an absolutely new life, to a life He did not live before He was incarnate. He rose to a life that had never been before; and His resurrection means for us that we are raised to His risen life, not to our old life. One day we shall have a body like unto His glorious body, but we can know now the efficacy of His resurrection and walk in newness of life. “I would know Him IN THE POWER OF HIS RESURRECTION.”

“As Thou hast given Him power over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as Thou hast given Him.” “Holy Spirit” is the experimental name for Eternal Life working in human beings here and now. The Holy Spirit is the Deity in proceeding power Who applies the Atonement to our experience. Thank God it is gloriously and majestically true that the Holy Ghost can work in us the very nature of Jesus if we will obey Him.

This doc has tried HCQ and zpak and found little benefit.

“Plaquenil which has weak ACE2 blockade doesn’t appear to be a savior of any kind in our patient population. Theoretically, it may have some prophylactic properties but so far it is difficult to see the benefit to our hospitalized patients, but we are using it and the studies will tell. With Plaquenil’s potential QT prolongation and liver toxic effects (both particularly problematic in covid 19 patients), I am not longer selectively prescribing this medication as I stated on a previous post.

We are also using Azithromycin, but are intermittently running out of IV.”

So, there is a report from China that HCQ alone is ineffective. There is a report from New Orleans that HCQ/zpak offers little benefit.

Nobody has yet reported that they found HCQ/zinc to be ineffective.

From the NO doc: “Basically, if you have a bilateral pneumonia with normal to low WBC, lymphopenia, normal procalcitonin, elevated CRP and ferritin- you have covid-19 and do not need a nasal swab to tell you that.”

That’s relevant because most of those can come back on a same-day blood test at most hospitals – I’d speculate

Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.

Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.

Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.

Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.

We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
Thank you Father, for Your Love and the gift of Life.

In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.

A prayer for Justice Kavanaugh and Gen. Flynn:

    Prayer to St. Michael

    St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle;
be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
    May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do you, O prince of the heavenly host,
    by the power of God,
thrust into hell Satan and the other evil spirits
who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.

In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.

An Orthodox Prayer for Deliverance from COVID-19

O God Almighty, Lord of Heaven and earth, and of all creation visible and invisible, in Thine ineffable goodness look down upon us, Thy people gathered in Thy Holy Name. Be Thou our helper and defender in this day of affliction. Thou knowest our weakness. Thou hearest our cry in repentance and contrition of heart. O Lord who lovest mankind, deliver us from the impending threat of the Corona Virus. Send Thine angel to watch over us and protect us. Grant health and recovery to those suffering from this virus. Guide the hands of physicians and preserve those who are healthy. Enable us to continue to serve our suffering brothers and sisters in peace that together we may glorify Thy most honorable and majestic Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages.

Through the prayers of our Holy Fathers, Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us and save us! Amen!

  41. Holy smokes!

I had just read a great deal about her, last week. She had PLENTY to say about the cascade of scandals that characterized the Clinton administration. While I read her accounts, I remember thinking “She needs to grow eyes in the back of her head, or she’s gonna get ‘Fostered'”
