Comey “Friend”, Benjamin Wittes, Outs Himself As Source for New York Times “Comey Memo” Storyline…

Long time CTH readers will note we extended well over a year of benefit-of-the-doubt to the motives of former FBI Director James Comey with regard to the severity of his politicized nature and disposition.  Throughout the entire Clinton investigation we remained ambivalent to Comey’s motives.

Indeed it wasn’t until after the Pulse nightclub terrorist attack when Comey obtusely noted the FBI had been contacted (prior to the attack) about the sketchy behavior of Omar Mateen by a ‘random concerned citizen’ -and our finding that the actual ‘citizen’ was the far more substantive St Lucie county sheriff Ken Mascara– that we recognized how far Comey was willing to go to save his political face.

Yesterday, a friend of James Comey by the name of Benjamin Wittes, editor and writer for lawfare blog, now steps out and admits he was one of the primary sources for the New York Times Comey Memo article (Michael Schmidt); and in so doing outlines the severity of the political nature of the former FBI Director:

[…]  I called Schmidt Friday morning after reading his earlier story, which ran the previous evening, about Comey’s dinner with President Trump and the President’s demands at that dinner for a vow of loyalty.

[…] I did this interview on the record because the President that morning was already issuing threatening tweets suggesting that Comey was leaking things, and I didn’t want any room for misunderstanding that any kind of leak had taken place with respect to the information I was providing.

[…]  I insisted that Schmidt record the conversation and give me a copy of the recording, so that we had a good record of what was said.

[…]  Comey understood Trump’s people as having neither knowledge of nor respect for the independence of the law enforcement function. And he saw it as an ongoing task on his part to protect the rest of the Bureau from improper contacts and interferences from a group of people he did not regard as honorable.

This was a general preoccupation of Comey’s in the months he and Trump overlapped—and the difference between this relationship and his regard for Obama (which was deep) was profound and palpable.  (read full article)

The gist of Benjamin Wittes outline is that he interpreted his friend -the magnanimous harbinger of truth, justice and the American way- James Comey, as expressing a feeling of undue potential influence by horrible Trump that Comey did not feel with the more well regarded Obama.  etc. etc.  {insert pearl-clutching/couch-fainting violin music here}

Except there’s a problem.

Not only did FBI Director James Comey testify to congress that neither President Trump nor President Obama ever attempt interference; but there are earlier media reports which outlined President Obama’s administration specifically interfering with an investigative intention of FBI Director Comey (emphasis mine):

March 29th 2017 – Newsweek:  FBI Director James Comey attempted to go public as early as the summer of 2016 with information on Russia’s campaign to influence the U.S. presidential election, but Obama administration officials blocked him from doing so, two sources with knowledge of the matter tell Newsweek.

[…]  the source with knowledge of Comey’s request says that the FBI director wanted the Russian interference made public earlier and that it was a sluggish White House that denied Comey and delayed the announcement. “The White House shut it down,” that source says. “They did their usual—nothing.” Both sources spoke to Newsweek on the condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to speak to the press.  (link)

Funny how FBI Director James Comey, as relayed by his good friend Benjamin Wittes, was concerned about Trump’s potential innuendo of influence, but Director Comey was perfectly okay with Obama’s specific interference to block Comey’s intended investigative action.

Additionally, the New York Times and Washington Post feeder pools are writing articles based on the hearsay recollections of Mr. Comey’s good friend Mr. Wittes.  Those feeder stories are fueling second, third, fourth toward infinity level rehashes and revisions of the same structured woe-is-Jim narrative.

When journalists write articles based on media reports of media reports, the concentric circles of self-serving sanctimony expand toward the infinite horizon of nothingness.

Personally, I hope Benjamin Wittes keeps writing on behalf of, and with full approval of, his good friend James Comey.  We are bound to find out much more about how severe the former FBI director was willing to go in advancement of his political objectives. After all…

[…] “This was a general preoccupation of Comey’s in the months he and Trump overlapped—and the difference between this relationship and his regard for Obama (which was deep) was profound and palpable”…

Remember what we previously said about “motives“?

All of the daily accusations against Trump, as presented by his political opposition and media, are based on the false premise that President Trump is carrying a malicious intent and self-interest.

His political opposition seem to miss this structural flaw in their argument because they are not familiar with facing a political opponent who is absent of career self-interest, influence or power.

The factual reality that Trump harbors no malicious disposition, evidences itself, and inevitably means all the attacks go nowhere.  In every single manufactured media controversy President Trump is inherently never in a position where he is personally gaining from the details within the controversy du jour.

[…] Political Trump uses this “intent” and “motive” approach to draw attention to his opponents, and it is structurally successful because the opposition is, FACTUALLY, always holding a motive.

When political Trump gets to the point where he’s ready to crush his opposition he simply points out their obvious motive and intent; it becomes common sense for the observing public to see it.  Trump’s opposition cannot do the same.  (more)

Which was all planned out. McCain had shopped the dossier around DC but it was so ludicrous even the rabid press wouldnt touch it so the plotters went to plan B to get it out. The dossier went to Comey. Comey gave Trump a heads up about the dossier at an Intel briefing then the news of a dossier.was promptly leaked. This gave the bottom feeding Buzzfeed a reason aka excuse to publish it which then gave CNN cover to report it as legitimate news while referring viewers to Buzzfeed. CNN gave the whole thing credibility. All of this was just before the inauguration and designed to cause Trump to step down, put Pence in office instead and provide the justification to remove Putin by force. The nexus of vipers is the Atlantic Council. They are committed to war with Russia.

At this point, Comey’s record is so suspect, he has earned an entire special investigation into everything he was involved in during the Obama Regime thru the day he was fired.

Since Comey reportedly has kept meticulous notes, written down quotes and wrote memos to himself, that info may well lead to some things much greater than a fake conspiracy against President Trump.

Amazing….Comey couldn’t find any of Hillary’s deliberately deleted emails that were sorted through by attorneys with no security clearance, but his friend knows exactly where Comey hides his private memos to himself.

A Yates timeline laid over events and meetings of Comey and Jarrett will produce new strings to follow and new questions for Comey. He may be hard boiled but he can be cracked.

This whole thing is just so ridiculous. If one wants to take it to its logical extreme, then Rothenstein, having written a memo supportive of the firing of Comey, allegedly after he already knew that the President intended to fire Comey, must also be investigated by the Special Counsel. And of course, the Special Counsel must then be investigated because how could he investigate the matter when he’s Comey’s buddy, and he is beholden to Rothenstein, who hired him for the Special Counsel job?

Check this out: Comedic, but absolutely points out the folly of the whole “Russia investigation” mess:

Comey can say that his friend Mr. Wittes got it wrong or that the reporter got it wrong. Then they will retract the story–no harm done. (Except the benefit of sowing additional seeds of doubt to the public regarding POTUS.)

My theory is that Comey does, in fact, have a book of notes but not necessarily any that incriminate or damage Trump. If an idiot like Weiner can create a “life insurance” file, Mr. Comey surely has had enough intelligence to keep his own set of notes as leverage against the murderous people who have been pulling his strings for the past 8-15 years. This whole memo story is a message to the Deep State that Comey has memos (a life insurance file) containing information about THEM, not Trump. The Wikileaks emails showed us how the DNC and Clintons use the press to spin and manipulate situations. There’s no way I’m believing that Comey or Mr. Wittes would be so stupid to leak this nonsense unless there was a bigger, ulterior motive and message in it.

“Back in December of 2015, when the administration was trying to get its story straight on its narrative that there was no connection between Islam and the San Bernardino massacre, Mr. Comey was apparently the only non-compliant member of the team. In other words, Comey was deeply loyal to Obama (not Trump) and was preoccupied with keeping everyone within the FBI from having any contact with Trump’s people during the transition period? (Please help me clarify this if I am wrong.)

Why would Comey’s good friend Wittes bother to include these details? And also noteworthy is Comey’s recent offer to testify for Congress only on the condition that it be public (as opposed to behind closed doors). Congress hasn’t accepted, as far as I know.

Could all this be a plea or a threat to Obama or Obama’s minions that Comey has been loyal to Obama and if he goes down, he’ll take everyone else down with him? After all that loyalty to Obama and the Clintons, is Comey sending a warning to them not to throw him under the bus?

      3)What “Comey understood,”
      3)how Comey “saw it,”
      4)what Comey “regard”(ed) “as honorable.”

It is clearly a fiction story with Wittes as the omnescient narrator,
or a confessional narrative by a “priest” to whom Comey confessed,
or an illegal reveal of medical information by Comey’s psychiatrist.

Obviously since Wittes is neither a close friend, a priest, nor a psychiatrist…
This is opinion and fiction written/stated by a megalomaniacal Wittes.

Wittes is a “think tanker,” yet cannot “think” how he is actually hurting Comey while pretending to side with Comey?

I’m just sitting here shaking my head at all of this. What do we know, and what do the democrats know?

    1. There was no collusion between Trump and Russia. The democrats KNOW this, they’re just trying to make it a political issue because they have no other way to nail Trump.

    2. They are doing this by leaking confidential information, which is against the law

    3. The reason leaking confidential information is against the law, is because in some cases it constitutes treason

    4. The punishment for treason is life inprisonment… with no chance of parole for 40 years. Until 1990 the punishment was the death penalty.

    5. If federal prosecutors can claim any of this leaking was ‘aiding the enemy’… it’s punishable by death.

Now, I’m not saying the prosecutors would push it that far… but THEY MIGHT.

So these Democrats are so stupid that they’re INVITING an investigation that could out the leakers, who would either end up in prison for the rest of their life or squeal on the other leakers.

Nowhere in any of this is there any danger for President Trump. Hell even this dumbass “Wittes” is walking a dangerous line, and he’s going to get his buddy Comey in so much trouble they’ll both need cakes with files in them sometime in the next two years…

“So these Democrats are so stupid that they’re INVITING an investigation that could out the leakers, who would either end up in prison for the rest of their life or squeal on the other leakers. ”

Well in this particular case, Comey (and the Dems) needed an “outed” source to enable Comey to disavow the accuracy of the so called “memos”….
This allows him to testify ( if necessary) and not implicate himself in the non-reporting of the incident.

He will merely say that Trump made him feel uncomfortable but that the interaction did not rise to the level of attempted obstruction. And. his “friend” just mis-interpreted the memo entry and was a bit over zealous in leaking it to MSM…..

Without the “self outing, Comey could not present a reasonable front…Now he has one. Expect Comey to be speaking freely quite soon and denying any implication of Trump putting force on him to drop the investigation. That would have also implicated Comey for not reporting it when it occurred.

With the intended damage already done, Comey & the Dems can spin the story & keep Comey somewhat squeaky cleaner than he otherwise would have appeared.

It is now absolutely clear that James Comey is an Obama-ite, through and through.

Comey was a willing participant in corruption under Obama because it was of a sort that he found agreeable. He was perfectly willing to conduct a sham investigation of Clinton’s email, aware from the start that it was strictly political theater designed to absolve her of responsibility for committing multiple felonies.

His October letter re-opening the investigation was strictly an attempt to deflect blame from the FBI and cover for the earlier sham investigation’s obvious shortcomings.

Comey has no problem BEING corrupt, he just doesn’t want it to be known.

This “friend” of Comey’s is doing him no favors by talking.

Witte just oozes insincerity. The calculated way he chooses every syllable, the
haughty manor in which he speaks and holds himself. People that are currently
defending Comey might start coming around if they see the kind of “champions”

Those with common sense can spot an inherently dislikeable person fairly quickly.
Witte fits that description to a T. Introduce him to as many as possible, and see

  21. I read reports that in “Shattered”, the book by Clinton insiders, they have mentioned that within 24 hours the Clinton camp cooked this Russia conspiracy theory. This is not by some unnamed source but it is out-in-the-open in a book. Why is DOJ not investigating this claim? They appoint a special counsel on some “anonymous source” leaking about the Comey memo but turn a blind eye to out-in-the-open “secret”? I am no law expert but I think all this activities by MSM and Democrats should qualify as “Have you participated in activities to overthrow U.S. government – Yes” (Question / Answer) – a question you are asked when applying for green card / citizenship.

It became the meme in force with the election results and the horror of realizing they had lost Bernie’s young people because of the proof in the WikiLeaks. Then all all came together to explain everything. CIA needed it. Deep State needed it. They attacked Flynn and Bannon using it.And they have focused on Trump since killing off Flynn.

It began to obfuscate the Russians with Podesta deals and the Uranium deal with Clintons.

Comprehend now? They projected on all Trump people what they were covered with, Russian deals, Russian money and selling out US and half their voters.

Just heard an interesting take: Putin hates Hillary Clinton and wanted to get revenge on her for US intervention in Russian elections. Actions taken by the Russians leading up to the 2016 election are on that motive.

If true (it’s entirely plausible- who DOESN’T hate Hillary Clinton) then it’s easy to see how the Dems might assume Putin wanted to hurt her in order to help Trump, but Trump was irrelevant in the calculus.

      • The media and democrats are suggesting that Putin hates Hillary. Why will he hate her when she is the one to make it happen for Russia to get our Uranium? Think about it (only couple of points) –

        1) Obama is on (hot mic) record with proof enough to suggest possible Russian collusion during 2012 election.
        2) Obama declaring that Hillary is innocent and had no malicious intent (paraphrasing) in the email scandal to the media and then Comey having his press conference and essentially he plagiarizes what Obama is saying in his media interviews.

Of the many, these are only two that warrants investigation 1) for Russian Collusion and 2) for obstruction of justice, but not one Republican-e has the spine to stand up and demand investigation.

And interestingly his writings evidence exactly what Sundance says: “All of the daily accusations against Trump, as presented by his political opposition and media, are based on the false premise that President Trump is carrying a malicious intent and self-interest.” I had a huge argument with a relative over a piece Wittes wrote on the travel EO. https://lawfareblog.com/malevolence-tempered-incompetence-trumps-horrifying-executive-order-refugees-and-visas The piece opens with this: “The malevolence of President Trump’s Executive Order on visas and refugees is mitigated chiefly—and perhaps only—by the astonishing incompetence of its drafting and construction.” He then goes on to “prove” how malicious Trump is. My relative thought it was a brilliant analysis. I held that Wittes opening statement disqualified his entire argument. How could anyone know what’s in Potus’ head or heart?

You realize that a Special council will drag this investigation out for years because it’s what they do. He will hire an army of young lawyers looking to make a name for themselves by claiming a big scalp. In the end they will issue a murky, ambiguous finding, not a clear acquittal of Trump. It will be insufficient to warrant any prosecution but leave enough loose ends that his political enemies will be able to say he’s guilty but got off on technicalities. They will need one criminal prosecution to justify their existence and that will likely be Flynn and /or Paul Manafort for accepting money from foreign governments without disclosing it. Pretty much minor crap but Dems will be able to claim that “Trump’s campaign colluded with Russia” and use that in 2020. It will be a foggy bunch of mostly nothing but in the eye of the beholder to make their own judgment. Just watch.

I will admit I have not read the DAG letter / memo regarding special counsel but from what I heard on radio – it is very narrow related to President Trump Campaign and Russian collusion and it is not an open-invitation-letter of the sort to look into 2016 election. I will be more than happy if I am wrong but after listening to multiple radio hosts, my take away is that this special counsel has very narrow path for investigation – primarily it is between President Trump campaign and Russia. I hope someone will set me straight if I am wrong in my understanding.

Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein Tells Congress Russia Probe Now Includes Possible Cover-Up

Investigators into Russian meddling in the U.S. presidential elections are now also probing whether White House officials have engaged in a cover-up, according to members of Congress who were briefed Friday by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

That avenue of investigation was added in recent weeks after assertions by former FBI Director James Comey that President Donald Trump had tried to dissuade him from pressing an investigation into the actions of Trump’s first national security adviser, retired Army Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, members of Congress said, though it was not clear whom that part of the probe might target.

Even as members of Congress were mulling over the expansion of the case into possible cover-up, and its reclassification from counterintelligence to criminal, the scandal appeared to grow.

The Washington Post reported Friday afternoon that federal investigators were looking at a senior White House official as a “significant person of interest.” The article did not identify the official, though it noted that the person was “someone close to the president.”
