Pentagon – About That Major Campaign In Iraq, On Mosul, We talked About Last Week: ‘Well, Um,.. Nevermind”…

Apparently the Pentagon forgot to check with the White House for permission before they coordinated an offensive against ISIS…  This is what happens when the Pentagon doesn’t defer to the White House, and General John Allen remembers the blackmail files being maintained on him.

General John Allen(Via Daily Beast) Just days ago, the generals were trumpeting plans to knock ISIS out of its most important stronghold in Iraq. Now, those plans are on indefinite hold.

The U.S. military’s goal to retake Iraq’s second largest city from the self-proclaimed Islamic State has been pushed back several months at least, defense officials told The Daily Beast. That’s a major shift for the Pentagon, which recently announced that the first major ground offensive in the war against ISIS could come in the next few weeks.

Defense officials once hoped that Iraqi troops could move into Mosul by the Spring and reclaim the city from ISIS. Now, those officials say, Fall is more realistic. And even that date was tenuous.

“It is an Iraqi decision but we don’t want to do anything until they are ready and can win decisively,” a military official explained to the Daily Beast. “They cannot now.”

It’s another sign that the U.S.-led campaign against ISIS isn’t going nearly as smoothly as the American government had hoped. At the Pentagon Friday, Defense Department spokesman Rear Adm. John Kirby shied away from any kind of timeline, saying: “I can’t put a date certain … nor say April is out.” (read more)

There is an inherent risk to the Obama administration from fighting ISIS.  Remember, this was something the Obama White House did not want to do.  Reluctantly, and with mounting electoral pressure from public opinion, President Obama reversed course in 2014 and decided to -at least optically- wage the war against ISIS.

Consequently, this administration needed a competent General they could appoint, yet Denis McDonough, Tony Blinkin, Ben Rhodes and Valerie Jarrett could control.

Control simply meaning rely on, and quite possibly bypass the Pentagon as they run the campaign against non-Islamic ISIS from the White House.

So who exactly could they leverage?   Oh yeah, General John Allen, yeah, that General John Allen.

Fire Up The Way-Back Machine To Summer 2012 !!

Jill and Dr. Scott Kelley lived in the Tampa / St. Pete area. They were/are active in the military community with support for military families.

The Kelley’s do numerous fundraisers etc. and when Petraeus was assigned to station in Tampa the Kelley’s hosted a meet-n-greet with Holly and David Petraeus.

Mr and Mrs. Petraeus became friends with Mr. and Mrs. Kelley.

So mid-summer 2012 Jill Kelley, a Petraeus family friend, began receiving odd and harrassing e-mails about her relationship with CIA director General David Petraeus:

“More like, ‘Who do you think you are? … You parade around the base … You need to take it down a notch,’” according to the source, who was until recently at the highest levels of the intelligence community and prefers not to be identified by name.

Jill Kelley then reaches out to a family friend, who is by profession, in the FBI.

Kelley asks if these unsourced e-mails reach the level of cyber-stalking.

The FBI “friend” takes Kelley to a field office where he puts her in contact with the “cyber-crimes” division/agents. There they essentially come to the conclusion the statute on cyber-stalking does actually seem to apply, so they open a preliminary case.

The first step in that aspect of the case is to back-check the IP’s etc to find the origin of the e-mails to Kelley.

That initial investigative part finds Paula Broadwell as the origin of the e-mails to Kelley. So the FBI gets a subpoena to dig further into the Broadwell electronic mail accounts. *Note the investigation at this point is into Paula Broadwell*

During the FBI research of Broadwell’s communication it becomes apparent that, in addition to harassing Kelley, Broadwell is in contact with CIA Director General David Petraeus on some “personal level”.

While this is occuring, the original FBI friend (unknown) of Kelley is asking the Cyber division people on the case for updates. They provide him some information based on professional courtesy.

The FBI friend in turn then relays this information to Jill Kelley herself; Kelley then begins to inform her friend, General Petraeus, of the source. Essentially Kelley telling Petraeus “heads up”… this woman (Broadwell) you know has been identified as the origin of threatening e-mails to me.

It Gets Creepy – Simultaneously, the FBI ‘friend’ of Kelley sends a personal, perhaps flirtatious, picture to Kelley that the FBI becomes aware of (they are monitoring Kelley’s communication).

The FBI, is not comfortable with the “non-professional” relationship between the FBI friend and Kelley, and they inform him he is ‘cut out’ of the story.

(The FBI probably know that Kelley is also back-channelling information from this guy to her friend Gen Petraeus – any investigator would not like this loss of control).

As the CIA Director becomes involved in the story, the FBI friend, now ‘cut out’, then perceives the story/investigation as potentially being buried because of the people involved.

So he takes the bit of “outsider” information he knows to a congressman; who, in turn, takes the information to House Majority Whip, Congressman Eric Cantor.

Congressman Cantor then reaches out to the FBI and asks if General Petraeus is the subject of an investigation.

Essentially, at this point in time Cantor is long-armed by the FBI to his inquiry because, in essence, General Petraeus is NOT the subject of an FBI investigation — Paula Broadwell is.

However, subsequent to the Cantor inquiry “higher ups” (FBI Director Robert Mueller) within the FBI is then notified. Mueller is told there is this investigation of this woman (Broadwell) which attaches her to CIA Director Petraeus in a rather sordid fashion.

The “affair is now outed.”

During the investigation it is noted/discovered that General Petraeus has been sexually involved with the Broadwell woman, however there is no criminal law-breaking per se’ on the part of the General, nor is he lying or covering it up.

So technically, there was no investigation of General Petraeus, only Paula Broadwell.

So technically, there is no notification to the Senate Intelligence Oversight Committee because they don’t tell the oversight committee about affairs, or personal indiscretions, only about unlawful activity being investigated.

At some point (late summer – Aug/Sept. 2012) the FBI head, Director Robert Mueller, now needs to tell the DOJ -Eric Holder- about Petraeus showing up on the radar of an investigation into another party.

Again, it appears no law was broken, and Petraeus was NOT the source of the investigation. The FBI interviews Petraeus to discuss, he admits the affair, they find no security breach – so it is not illegal.

Benghazi Happens 9/11/12

After the investigation into Broadwell / Petraeus, a letter of investigative finding is filed (late Oct 2012).

Subsequently, because Petraeus is outlined in the investigation of Broadwell, the Director of National Intelligence, James Clapper, is notified (End October 2012).

Clapper then calls Petraeus and tells him the affair is probably going to come out because two congressmen also have knowlege of it – further it compromises his position as CIA Director. Clapper recommends resignation.

The following day Clapper then tells the President of the conversation and recommendation. The following day after that President Obama calls Petraeus to the White House, they discuss, they agree on resignation.

Story could have stopped there, it didn’t. Because of Benghazi and….

…… as the newly awakened media began looking backwards into Paula Broadwell they find some statements from Broadwell about CIA operations in Benghazi that could only have come from her relationship with General Petraeus, “pillow talk.” Major super secret intelligence information:

Given the relationship revelation, the speech at Colorado University by Broadwell, takes on a new level of meaning.

As Broadwell outlined in her statement that the Benghazi CIA “Annex” was also a CIA detention facility of sorts, it becomes obvious that she might be in posession of leaked CIA classified information. Did she actually have information about CIA rendition sites?

Her claim of Benghazi Militia members being held at the CIA compound is NOW the issue of investigation.

In essence — “Did Petraeus tell Broadwell CIA secrets?” now becomes the national story.

FBI agents were at the Broadwell home in North Carolina Monday night to carry out a consensual search that had been arranged with her lawyers, law enforcement sources said. The search was to locate additional classified material on computers or documents in the home, the sources said.

Broadwell appears to be cooperating with investigators in an effort to make this go away, to show that she has nothing else to hide, the sources said.

But House Majority Leader Eric Cantor knew of Petraeus’ affair with Broadwell almost two weeks before the former CIA director resigned his post.

A senior Cantor aide told ABC News that the Republican congressman from Virginia learned about the FBI investigation that brought the affair to light in a phone conversation with an FBI agent Oct. 27.

Cantor then asked his chief-of-staff to pass the information along to the head of the FBI, Robert Mueller. Cantor spoke to no one else about the investigation, the aide said.

Hurricane Sandy delayed the message to Mueller until Oct. 31. Petraeus admitted the extramarital relationship and submitted his resignation nine days later. (more)

…. and oh yeah, watch out for here’s where the General Allen story connects to Jill Kelley

[…] In a new twist to the Gen. David Petraeus sex scandal, the Pentagon said Tuesday [November 13th 2012] that the top American commander in Afghanistan, Gen. John Allen, is under investigation for alleged “inappropriate communications” with a woman who is said to have received threatening emails from Paula Broadwell, the woman with whom Petraeus had an extramarital affair, Jill Kelly.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said in a written statement issued to reporters aboard his aircraft, en route from Honolulu to Perth, Australia, that the FBI referred the matter to the Pentagon on Sunday. Panetta said that he ordered a Pentagon investigation of Allen on Monday.

Allen, a four-star Marine general, succeeded Petraeus as the top American commander in Afghanistan in July 2011.

The senior official, who discussed the matter only on condition of anonymity because it is under investigation, said Panetta believed it was prudent to launch a Pentagon investigation, although the official would not explain the nature of Allen’s problematic communications.

The official said 20,000 to 30,000 pages of emails and other documents from Allen’s communications with Kelley between 2010 and 2012 are under review. He would not say whether they involved sexual matters or whether they are thought to include unauthorized disclosures of classified information.

He said he did not know whether Petraeus is mentioned in the emails.

“Gen. Allen disputes that he has engaged in any wrongdoing in this matter,” the official said. He said Allen currently is in Washington. (More)

Within a few weeks General John Allen retires.

Occam’s Razor: 2012’s quiet disappearance (retirement)  is 2015’s ISIS campaign leverage (brought out of retirement and now in charge of the White House ISIS campaign).  See how that works?

Wow Les, that tells it all! I say thanks for the link even though I’m now thoroughly sick to my soul. The evil of these people we intrusted with our country and the safety of our soldiers – our beloved family members and friends.

Treasonous activity everywhere and nobody cares enough to take action. Could they truly not see the manipulation?

Then there is the silence of the media – they are also at the heart of this betrayal.

Pentagon’s between a hard place and a rock (note I didn’t say ‘Iraq’). GEN Allen can ‘plan’ anything he wants to BUT it should not have been so openly released. “Apparently the Pentagon forgot to check with the White House for permission before they coordinated an offensive against ISIS…” the point here is that the President is the Commander-in-Chief and tells the military what to do (like it or not, it’s the Constitution). The Pentagon/DoD has plans and contingency plans for things that have less of a chance of happening that Obama honestly going to confession. These plans belong to the President and to even leak one smacks of insubordination in trying to sway your commander’s decision.
The generals make plans and carry them out but the President’s in the loop at all times as if something goes wrong it all falls back into the President’s lap. Generals surrender troops in the field, presidents surrender power and countries.
That said, just about all presidents appoint all 4-start major commanders for political reasons. You go to and Senator’s office in Dc and you are going to see an Ollie North-type 0-5 or 0-6 there acting as some sort of staffer, s/he’s managed to wriggle through the crowd to punch a really important career ticket. The general (including the Navy’s Admirals) officers are the political cream of the officer ranks just as Federal Senators are the cream of the political ranks. With some 930+ general officers floating around it’s not hard (and usually SOP) for a president to look for someone who’s a political match to appoint to an important position. Look at LBJ and his political choices to run the Vietnam debacle that was more political than military. Clinton and GEN Shalikashvili? Look at Lincoln trying to find a general that could do battle as effectively as he could politics.
Generals are the willing shields that presidents hide behind to deflect criticism of their actions. Some wars you get a Rosecrans, then in some you get a Schwarzkopf – it’s how well the president makes that self-serving political choice. The general’s failings are his own, the president’s are the nations.

      great comment as always.
and rumor has it that Lebanon could be the next focus for whatever is, is…so maybe fighting 2 fronts at once (mosul +) would be too much ?
just about everything has been neutered here, incl the Constitution, the military, the internet, the legal system, educational curriculi, the opinions of heterosexuals, the pulpits, police officers, effective foreign policy, the media..and fighting wars to win.
      strategic patience.
      strategic, for whom, exactly?

‘strategic patience. strategic, for whom, exactly?’ I’m betting whomever has the reason and tenacity to sit it out. ISIS, the US, Kurds – all of ’em – are just pieces in a bigger game being played at another level. You’d think that with all of the participants (players AND victims) being part of the Great UN International Social Experiment that the situation would have been taken care of by the beneficent and omniscient giant heads but somehow…
I definitely believe Lebanon’s in the short list – Iran’s had its cutout forces there for some time now, just waiting for the right opportunity. Syria wanted Lebanon back but it looks like Syria’s gonna be lucky to keep its socks on by the time this game’s over. Lebanon and Jordan – sitting ducks with no friends except Israel.

Czar, without having the NSC, (National Security Council) directive at our fingertips, and Gen Allen’s specific command guidance to his Command we can only speculate the mission tasks Gen Allen and his Command are saddled with. I believe Gen.Allen is operating a semi independent command. So his orders are directly from the NCS, and other regional commands are tasked in supporting his command. I’ll stop here, having flash backs, and headaches.

Yes, but whatever his orders he still has a presidential leash around his neck. He is given orders but even they are subject to almost instantaneous changes and he has constraints imposed even in his basic orders. Look at Vietnam – the general in charge of the war got marching orders from LBJ and even though we were involved in an illegal and covert black-ops war in Laos and Cambodia the folks at MACV still needed Ambassador Sullivan’s permission to go into one or both of those countries and rescue US forces who might be trapped there. Go back farther to Korea – Truman gave MacQArthur the orders to push the NK back to the Yalu but when Mac said he was going to blow the bridges over the Yalu to prevent the Chinese from crossing and aiding the NKs he and Truman came to blows and Mac was fired. The blowing of the bridges on the NK side could arguably have been within Mac’s orders but…
Even if the NSC’s sending him orders the NSC cannot override the NCA who is the POtuS and the SecDef. The NCA’s calling the tunes and the 4-stars just dance. Orders. like you know what else, roll downhill and the President’s sitting way up top on the throne.

It all boils down to the fact that the Iraqi Army won’t be ready until alt least September. The IS attack in al-Baghdadi proved they still have a long way to go. They are getting better but with less equipment the Kurds are much more efficient at killing IS. You can’t win just trading casualties with terrorist thugs. You have to instill the fear eminent death and destruction. Right now the Iraqi Army doesn’t.
