ENGLAND – Nigel Farage tonight claimed victory in the European elections, becoming the first ‘insurgent party’ to top a national vote.

With results still being declared, Mr Farage broke cover to predict he will humiliate the Westminster parties, pushing Labour and the Tories into second and third.

Support for Ukip has surged by more than 12 per cent, outstripping a more modest boost in votes for Labour, while the Lib Dems face wipeout, with some calling for Nick Clegg to resign.

Mr Farage said: ‘Ukip is going to win this election and yes that will be an earthquake because never before in the history of British politics has a party that will be seen to be an insurgent party ever topped the polls in a national election.’

On a dramatic political night:

  • The Lib Dems were on course to lose all of their MEPs, replaced in some areas by the Greens
  • Labour failed to make progress in key areas where they must win at the general election
  • The BNP lost its place in Brussels, as leader Nick Griffin conceded defeat
  • David Cameron faced fresh pressure to consider local electoral deals with Ukip at next year’s general election;
  • Mr Farage suggested he aimed to destroy the Conservative Party, not make pacts with it.

Counting votes cast in the UK began on Sunday, with officials in Southampton pictured arranging long ballot papers into piles

Early estimates suggested turnout across Europe was an estimated 43.1 per cent, up slightly from 43 per cent in 2009.  (continue reading)
