We originally presented this back in June 2012. However, in the face of the current conversation regarding gun control, it is appropriate to revisit the concept of Law Enforcement and “affirmative duty”:

In the video, and in the article, the local law enforcement again repeat the mantra she was “lucky” and it is best to avoid confrontation/contact with attackers. However, does anyone consider that the “avoidance principle” is exactly what empowers these attackers to escalate their activity?

Two teenage boys, one 16 and one 18, grope young Ms. Dang, and let’s say she just took off running, what do you think these boys will do next time? While I certainly agree that a person should never put themselves knowingly in a position of danger, once that danger is encountered I do not subscribe to automatically thinking the best option is to engage the “victim” mentality. Understand where this is going….. This is Step One…..   If criminal background checks adversely impact blacks or males (race, gender – protected categories) during the employment eligibility process, then it becomes illegal to conduct background checks.    This “disparate impact” test is the same test applied to the concept of school discipline previously outlined.

(Via American Thinker)  On September 19, 2012, the Newark, New Jersey Municipal Council passed Ordinance 12-1630, “which limits employers’ ability to conduct criminal background checks.” The ordinance went into effect November 18, 2012 and “prevents employers with five or more employees who do business, employ persons or take applications for employment in the City of Newark, from asking applicants about their criminal history.” (more…)

Martin was out of school because he was suspended for a week, and his father told the Herald that he brought him to Sanford “to disconnect and get his priorities straight.”

His father took Trayvon there[Sanford] after the junior was suspended for 10 days from Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High.

The family has refused to say why Trayvon was suspended, only offering that Trayvon had violated some type of school policy. They said his act was not violent or criminal.

“I wanted him to get back focused on his priorities, his goals,” Martin said of his decision to drive to Sanford with his son. “I wanted some one-on-one time.” (more…)
