(CBS News) — Documents obtained by CBS News show that the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) discussed using their covert operation “Fast and Furious” to argue for controversial new rules about gun sales.
In Fast and Furious, ATF secretly encouraged gun dealers to sell to suspected traffickers for Mexican drug cartels to go after the “big fish.” But ATF whistleblowers told CBS News and Congress it was a dangerous practice called “gunwalking,” and it put thousands of weapons on the street. Many were used in violent crimes in Mexico. Two were found at the murder scene of a U.S. Border Patrol agent. (more…)

Check this video from a March 2009 press conference put together by The Right Scoop.   It announces that not only was it an issue very important to the president, but it was specifically directed by the president in conjunction with Attorney General Eric Holder.  This goes a long way in explaining why Obama issued that executive privilege this morning.  They’ve got to keep Holder from having to release those documents relating to Fast & Furious.

Understand How Significant This Is

FLASHBACK – in October 2011 Obama specifically stated he was not informed of the Department of Justice operation known as Fast and Furious.

There was no ambiguity in this claim from President Obama circa October 6th 2011. He specifically and with unambiguous specificity stated he was unaware of the Fast and Furious operation (see video above).   Yet today, in an effort to protect Eric Holder, President Obama invokes executive privilege.

WASHINGTON DC – President Obama has granted an 11th-hour request by Attorney General Eric Holder to exert executive privilege over Fast and Furious documents, a last-minute maneuver that appears unlikely to head off a contempt vote against Holder by Republicans in the House.

Which begs the obvious question the media will not challenge the President on:

How can President Obama possibly assert executive privilege over internal deliberations he has previously claimed didn’t exist?

Last February, we reported on the very real possibility that John Boehner had cut a deal with Eric Holder to provide for a mutually satisfactory outcome to the Fast and Furious scandal.  Boehner, never known for being a tower of political courage, appeared to be opting for political expediency and a quick end to what could prove to be a racially charged investigation.  Now, it appears Boehner has given his long-awaited approval for next week’s contempt of Congress vote against Attorney General Eric Holder.  Why the sudden change of heart from this tower of timidity?  Why the sudden disregard for risking his political advantage….or  worse,  angering the lame stream media?    (more…)

I’m flippin’ speechless, speechless.   How can the US Attorney General say that communication between the justice dept officials that specifically say they are talking about “fast and furious”, be spun by the Attorney General to claim they are NOT talking about “fast and furious”.    WTF?
Boehner needs to immediately move to hold Eric Holder in contempt of congress.
(CNSNews.com) — Attorney General Eric Holder claimed during congressional testimony today that internal Justice Department emails that use the phrase “Fast and Furious” do not refer to the controversial gun-walking operation Fast and Furious.

Under questioning from Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah), who read excerpts of the emails at a House Judiciary Committee hearing on Justice Department oversight, Holder claimed that the phrase “Fast and Furious” did not refer to Fast and Furious but instead referred to another gun-walking operation known as “Wide Receiver.”
However, the emails refer to both programs — “Fast and Furious” and the “Tucson case,” from where Wide Receiver was launched — and reveal Justice Department officials discussing how to handle media scrutiny when both operations become public. (more…)

(CBS News) — The lead House Republican investigating Operation Fast and Furious, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA), today said senior Justice Department officials had specific information that their federal agents were using controversial “gunwalking” tactics.
Justice Department officials have consistently denied that was the case. But today in a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder, Issa revealed that he has reviewed sealed wiretap applications in the case, which were signed off on the authority of Holder’s Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer. Issa wrote Holder “having seen the wiretap applications, we now know that the information coming from the (Justice) Department has been misleading. That must stop.” (more…)

(CBS News) — For more than a year, CBS News has been investigating the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms’ “Fast and Furious” operation and related cases that also employed the controversial tactic of “gunwalking.”
With Justice Department officials refusing all interview requests to date, CBS News requested numerous public documents through the Freedom of Information Act.
