Not necessarily. It could have been hairspray. There are some hairsprays that dry and flake. If you didn’t know better, you would think it was dandruff. It’s possible his hair was a mess and those around him tried to fix him up real quick for the cameras so somebody pulled out some hairspray from their purse and that’s what caused it.
That sometimes happens to me, but it’s my own fault, because I make my own hair spray. I started making my own when the product I had been using started filling my hair with what turned out to be particles of white plastic!! My home brew is sugar and water, with a few drops of lavender oil. Everybody did it when we were in school, before we could drive. If you miss blotting up drops on dark clothes and they dry, this is what you get. Speed is not your friend, and prevention is worth a pound of cure. 😒

Is this punting the decision on regulation to the next administration – and one more favorable to the tech bros?
The tech bros are clamoring for government regulation for two reasons: to monopolize their lead position and to escape liability if anything goes wrong – the government is never held accountable for anything.
Whereas both they and the government are incorporated entities there is a far simpler and stronger solution: remove the corporate veil. Make the corporate officers 100% commercially and personally responsible for what they create.
Then watch how careful they become.

Self regulation is much better than government. Once the industry arrives at a proven set of self controls it can be set as a standard in much the same way as UL. There will still be problems and lawsuits that change these standards. All government has to do is endorse the industry standard and help enforce. The companies should include everyone and have a fund set up that helps resolve the inevitable problems that will pop up.
They could even set up a certification. “SID, super intelligence developers, certified not to destroy humanity!”
I do believe though that we need to have laws about labeling AI content, so that consumers know what is real and what is not.

That means the investment and build up will for the next few years give the US higher gdp growth…well above the 3% target. The AI developers should not be giving it human characteristics such as describing it as “super intelligent” or even just “intelligent”. AI consists of applications developed and programmed by humans and it will never be sentient. It is what they are programming it to be, no more and no less.
Ascribing AI with human characteristics like that seems to me to be an effort by those AI CEOs to distance themselves from potential liability for its misuse, as if it can commit misuse all on its own and they have nothing to do with it. AI is what they are making it to be and they must remain responsible for the potential misuses they are knowingly making it capable of inflicting. If they do not like that, then they should have already been developing and implementing the kinds of safeguards, controls and audits that PT outlined today.

Artificial would generally mean something not found in Nature and synthetic would mean something that is man-made. Artificial intelligence simulates human intelligence in machines, focusing on mimicking cognitive functions. I still remember what I was taught in early computer science courses, (yes, I was still using punch cards). A programmer must tell a computer what to do and what not to do. Nothing more and nothing less. That is what is contained in this Joint Commitment on Frontier Responsibilities.
If you strip the hype away, AI is the rapid retrieval of data and use of statistical analysis to make predictions based upon patterns in data. When we hear stories of software from AI labs hacking into databases, what we are seeing is software performing actions that reflect the values of the programmers and lack of forethought.
As for Biosecurity, since the 1960s, the central tenets of Biosafety have been an honor system, the theory of self-preservation, and institutional accountability. Ideally, a researcher will honor an institutional system designed to provide oversight over risky research and researchers will limit the risk of their research to protect themselves. What we have learned is Biosafety was built upon Western values (Christianity) and not everyone shares these our values. Once the honor system, self-preservation, and institutional accountability are removed from the system then a strong Biosecurity approach is required to counter those without honor and/or those who do not care if they create a biological threat and die from it.
From the perspective of a computer program, it is not difficult to program in safeguards. That is why the Biosecurity commitment is based upon building safeguards and internal processes to ensure compliance.
A common example of safeguards written into software is Google images. Try pasting a picture of someone who is not a public figure into Google images. It will not identify the individual and provides a statement that responses for people are limited. Google placed safeguards in that tool to keep from being sued.

I suspect there are issues either with the order and logic of the underlying algorithms or someone ignored (or hid) how tasks were completed during the refinement of the decision making process, aka, A.I. training. Every person involved in this process introduces their bias and morals into the software. Many consider the entire AI training process to be unethical due to the questionable use of copyrighted material and IP. The $1.5 billion that Anthropic paid to settle a case will be nothing more than a rounding error when the company goes public.

Many AI systems are self-adaptive — or at least can be. Where a system can write new code or modify existing code to do things “better.”
Even without that aspect, the number of things an AI system can try and the speed at which it can do that far exceeds anything human. Consider, for example, trying to find security vulnerabilities in systems.
That can be both good and bad depending on the intent (find them to make everyone safer versus finding them to do something nefarious).
What becomes hard to manage is how the human factor that feeds this process is prevented from being nefarious or from just making normal human errors that might take a system down a nefarious path.
These aspects of AI are what makes it different than what many think of as a “computer program” which, historically has been a very static sort of entity.
Also consider how, for military or so-called national security purposes, we know many guardrails will be dropped with lots of justification given.
I think we need a big open source and free people’s AI that, among other things, keeps the other AI in check.

very fast but doesn’t have a stateful memory. I can ask it exactly the same question just one hour apart and I’ll get a different set of answer. Sometimes, it is the same answer, but often it is not.
it becomes clear it cannot actually search for real time data, or read accurately things that we human can easily read and understand with accuracy. Example: I ask it for the open, high, low and close for a particular asset in a given range of dates, and it makes significant mistakes. When pressed, it explains that it “synthesizes” answers. So from the perspective of being accurate, I give it a score of F. It really does matter to get numbers correct.
when I press it about incorrect responses, such as the actual shifting sequences for a manual 4×4 shifter common in nearly every GMC since 2014, it responds “thank you for the correction and then proceeds to go back do its work again and usually the answer is correct”…but this raises a important point: what if I did not know to press it knowing what the sequence really is?
right now, I would score it as pretty good, but I have to constantly feed it and nudge it and challenge it about 60 percent of the time on what seems to me while technical in context, is actually well known, documented and understood.
Why any criticisms in this discussion area are related to President Trump’s appearance is beguiling to me.

The White House Accord on Super Intelligence is anything but intelligent. It is not only ambiguous, it is a worthless piece of paper legally and otherwise. It does nothing, not even, at least in my mind, does it provide a ‘warm and fuzzy’ regarding the loosely fitted players in the sandbox. Oh come on! Whoever drafted this wasteful document could have at least introduced it as a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). That, at least, may have provided a real ground basis for which to build upon as the letter suggests that it wanted.

I agree with your sentiment, although I believe this is too little too late – should’ve had this happen years ago. (And note that AI started rolling out to the world during the previous administration and we didn’t hear one word about it.)
I say too little too late because it’s already infecting our lives, seemingly in new ways ever day. Months ago my credit union tried AI for handling phone calls, but fortuntely they gave up on it. Last week I received an AI email from FedEx about a two-day delivery that had been late the week before. I could go on and on.

My medical care system recently began “upgrading and improving” all of their systems software/interface with clients/patients. What a stupid, stupid, overlapping, repetitive, confusing, incompetent, inefficient, labor-intensive, and open-ended mess it is. And it’s obviously job security for the people who designed it and are running it.
I don’t know. I’ve found it to be good at retrieving college football scores from 15-20 years ago. That’s worth a couple of billion of someone else’s money to me. I find their response on societal issues quite liberal though!
