My wife, who had a terminal illness, encouraged him to get his GED so she could see him complete high school. After she died in 2021, my son and I high tailed it back to the sanity of the deep south! The apparent cognitive dissonance on this one seems breathtaking. On some message boards, some representing themselves as Canadian appeared to counter calls for carpet and forest management priorities by seeming to indicate their forests are just too big and inaccessible.

I am just questioning the cancellation of the World Cup seeing as unless there’s an overnight risk factor of changing winds, the motor cross racing is at present not impacted by air quality.

Big disasters are (thankfully) rare. They don’t happen every day.
But that allows politicians to loudly make a lot of empty promises that “there will be no next time,” but then do nothing, or worse they, steal all the money and put it into unrelated pet projects. The politicians are playing good odds that they won’t be held accountable while still in office.
That’s the scenario we see playing out in Canada. It’s the same story as we have seen before in California’s fires, in the Lahaina fire in Hawaii, in hurricane Katrina, in most of our wars. It happens all the time.
The bigger the disaster the bigger the public reaction to never let it happen again. That offers the biggest opportunities for politicians to hijack public resources. Just look at what they did after 9-11 and during Covid.
There was a time when grazing permits were issued. The grazing animals kept the forrest floor clean.

I’m pretty sure that the organizers could very quickly find a venue in the southern United States which would not be affected by smoke. It is very obvious that the smoke is a very serious issue for an athletic competition, and I would be in favor of moving the game.

You know, I’m a Canadian conservative (senior) living in Ontario – not a fan of Liberal gov’t, and Ford remains the inadequate lesser of all other options ☹️ but….I have experience in forestry & fire management (long before satellites, etc, I spent a summer in fire detection that involved flying in a 2 seater plane, and mapping & then calling in fires). The Ontario fire budget is increased over last year’s – it looks inadequate because provincial budget sets a baseline, and then adds what’s needed depending on the fire season. This year’s fires are more remote (north) than is usual, making getting people there slower, etc. But….there are fires in northern states as well. It is a tad unfair of US gov’t to blame all the wildfire smoke on Canada. Not a few of the border (forested ) states aren’t necessarily known for um, appropriate budgeting for necesdities, either

Looking at a current fire map there are over 600 fires burning in the Pacific Northwest alone. I’m sure the resources are stretched thin.

Everytime I visited Ontario and Quebec for fencing tournaments I smelled the stench of Socialism. I decided in 2019 I will not travel to any Commonwealth Country..
Long ago I listened to Dr Bill Wattenberg who had a late night show on KGO out of San Francisco. The signal would travel up the west coast.
Regarding these fires, Dr Bill explained that by not thinning the forest and by letting the underbrush build up that the fires that got started would burn so hot it killed the forest. Insects would come in and ravage anything left.
Today’s forests are in fact tree farms. Trees planted close together. The old forests had natural spacing of trees.
There has to be a middle ground. A lot of young people standing around looking for trouble could be at work clearing underbrush. Being productive used to be a source of pride in the US. Let’s bring it back.
