I previously saw an interesting discussion with NVIDIA Jensen Huang where in the context of AI he was asked: who is the smartest person you ever met?
Jensen Huang paused for quite a few moments thinking about the question before he answered.
Huang then redefined the word “smart.”
‘Smart’ is a word we have historically used in reference to ‘intelligence’. If a person was intelligent, we say that person is smart. However, in this era of AI at your fingertips, we must break this connection.
Intelligence, the assembly of knowledge about a particular matter of discussion, is no longer limited to educational or real-life training or study by people who focus intensely on subject material.
All of the knowing about a system, any system, process, history or discussion topic is now available almost instantly to anyone in this era of artificial intelligence.
The NVIDIA CEO then continued, therefore, once we break our historic reference connecting ‘intelligence’ and the generalized term ‘smart’, we can properly address the question you present.
Who is the smart man? Or, in the context of the originating question, “who is the smartest person?”
With this baseline established, Jensen Huang then outlined the traits of the smartest person. The smartest person is not the person with the greatest knowledge; the smart individual is the person who can tune into the frequency of the universal moment, look at the human reality of what is factually taking place that has not yet become an input into the AI capture record, and then predict the material outcome – the destination of knowledge that has not yet arrived.
Essentially, Huang explains the smart person is alone, tuning themselves into the vibration that is the consequence of human activity, financial interests, geopolitical movement, social transformation, economic shifts and cultural modifications. Then, positioning their interests at the place in the future where they predict all the activity will arrive.
The accuracy of prediction, or predictive positioning, then determines the scale of smart. The more accurate a person is under this perspective, the smarter they are.
I agree with this perspective.
All of human knowledge is now being assembled into AI databases for exploration by anyone with a keen interest or stake in the subject matter. Knowledge is no longer the valuation of ‘smart.’ The ability to predict the next step, phase or moment is the smart attribute.
With this context, we can now look back over the past few decades, not looking for the most intelligent voice, but rather looking at the accuracy of current position, contrast with the outline from the voices who make the predictions.
This interview about the ramifications of cultural change in Europe was given in 2010, sixteen years ago, centered on a book written by Mark Steyn and the context within the questioning is looking forward over a period of about 20 years.
Remember, this is 2010, written before the “arab spring, long before Brexit, well before President Donald Trump and the MAGA agenda as policy and before the U.K churned through seven prime ministers’ in a decade.

I absolutely agree. Assembling a bunch of knowledge about a subject is only a beginning, and how the information is handled or mishandled beyond that point is a huge part of being intelligent or not. There are “smart” people, indeed valedictorians, who are mere learners and reciters, but these people are not exercising intelligence, merely memory and reproduction, together with a degree of cooperation that makes them popular with teachers. Critical thinkers, challengers, and verifiers, such as Albert Einstein and the many yet few who actually question, imagine, invent, and improve, rather than comply, are not so popular with most teachers, because most teachers are not Socrates; they are reciters. “Dish back to your prof what your prof dishes you. Though you doubt what he says, what he says must be true. But never commit the unpardonable sin of allowing an idea of your own to creep in.”
It may be intuitively smart to dish back what the prof says.
Yes, on a human level, an intelligent person can understand what the problem is.
A smart person knows how to find a solution to that problem.
From a Christian perspective, being smart doesn’t carry a lot of weight going into eternity. Actually just simply childlike faith in Jesus saying “I am the way the Truth and the Light, no one comes to the Father but through Me”. When I hear the word Savvy on it’s own I think of it as a question. The question being “Do you understand?” I never thought of that way until the series of movies “The Pirates of the Caribbean.”

Wouldn’t a real conservative support free trade? I was in that camp until after seeing the devastation to the American worker. I don’t know what the right answer is but if we go 100% automation I want those machines in America.

Many people can be wise beyond imagining and yet be imperfect in points of their thinking. Much of what the persons you mentioned here said or have said is in reaction to things that have needed to be corrected, and they would not be so opaque as to hold onto points of thought that need to adjust in response to changing realities. You play a chess game. At the moment, this is a good move. However, the opponent makes a move. To stick doggedly with the view that the move is still and always good is a sign of anything but intelligence. You reconsider in the light of reality, always as reality is. There is a time when guns and butter are mere items of economic value, when all is calm and everyone is cooperating in the purely economic game. However, when matters evolve beyond mere free trade questions, I’d rather be on the more democratic side and have the guns. Context is, oh, so important to intelligent evaluation of ideas. I would not paint Sowell, Williams, Friedman, and other actual thinkers with too specifically colored a brush, because smart people don’t change their thinking, but they do adapt their conclusions always to reality, while reality shifts and offers changing risks. For example, you have an ally. What if the ally betrays you? Time to change conclusions and risk management to an entirely new context, very different from the strong trust and confidence before the betrayal. That is when things get deeply re-thought, although the possibility of betrayal had always been among the considerations, and also responses to it, for an intelligent person.

I’ve always wondered what Danny Thomas thought of his meathead son in law Donahue. I personally despised his acceptance of Soviet Union by his having Pozner on his show frequently. Pozner was a Communist spokesman of the USSR extolling the virtues of Moscow. I believe Pozner still lives in the U.S.
Free trade sounds great in theory but it only works if everyone is playing by the same rules. When you’re dealing with countries that “cheat”, sticking to that ideal will ruin you. We’re dealing with countries like China who will use state money and virtual slave labor to subsidize their industries until our private industries are bankrupted. All the while our “friends” in Canada and Mexico allow them to dump their products there to avoid any type of restrictions to their BS. They’ve destroyed more factories than bombs or missiles ever could.
Even Adam Smith, arguably the biggest proponent of free trade, agreed that a country should have protectionist policies to protect industries vital to national defense and security. I didn’t know that about Sowell. How someone like Sowell doesn’t see that is mind boggling. Disappointing. We’ve been sold out by many people.
Many of the above sounded great because we only had the left/mainstream to compare them to at the time.
Depending on your musical taste the following analogy may ring true, otherwise sub in your genres.
Let’s say you liked hard rock music like Led Zeppelin. Then by the late 70’s there was a ton of disco crap on the radio but some rock bands fought through that and by comparison they were better than disco but they couldn’t hold candle to Zep.
Later in the 90’s there was a ton of what some called alternative rock plus grunge (meaning they didn’t bother with the fluff) and all of that was more real like Trump. So you look back at the “hair bands” of the 80’s and they were just pulling the wool over our eyes.
Basically in this analogy Trump is our grunge music. He cuts things down to basics while most of the pundits mentioned in the above comments were hair bands.

My daughter and a nephew are using AI in their jobs. As it stands AI makes smart people smarter quicker and much more productive. A boss of one used it to make a training deck…….He was a VP and what I call a “coaster”… The training tool was terrible. My daughter’s training deck was great marketing, could be made into an ad. It took her 5 minutes to coach the AI and in the old days I would have paid an ad agency 10,000 to 20,000 dollars.
My point Smart people will be incredibly more productive and effective.

AI (in all its forms and applications) will speed up data retrieval and synthesis / analysis, but within the adoption phase it will have the “intended” consequence of “dumbing down” the People, individually and at large.
AI is the perfect follow-on to a failed education system and pedagogy that has as its objectives nothing to do with “teaching the ‘victim / subjects’ – How to teach themselves.”
As to Steyn’s insightfulness and the Yugoslavia parallel, consider that the US feral government has had plans for the segmenting of the continental US into 7 – 10 autonomous regions since the ’60s or before; this is beyond FEMA or military control planning.

AI will never have the ability to randomize like humans. There are good and bad things that humans come up with that are just so outrageously out of the norm, no logical process will ever come up with it.
This is one of the concepts about interaction between AI and humans that Neal Asher writes about in his hard scifi novels. AI’s logically know they need humans to come up with those “light bulb turning on” revelations.
By the way, what are we to do when AI content like audio, video, and writing, is indistinguishable from the real? Can an AI produce content that we can’t differentiate from real? We need our government to pass laws that require all AI content be identified as such. Even then, there will be non-compliance and video will come out showing someone doing something they did not do. How does one defend themselves in court or court of public opinion when the accusatory content can not be proven to be false?
My first time to actually see what AI can do is back when PDJT was running for president the first time. I heard an ad on the radio, thought it was him talking. After ad was over, announcer said ad was made using AI. It made me very afraid of AI. I’m very old and don’t see a need for it in my life but I know it’s out there.

Think about how people search for data whether it’s a browser or a company database or a simple part a company buys or makes. Depending on the wording sequence, which words you put first or last and how you prioritize your search you will get different results. This isn’t new. Some people, with intelligence rather than smarts, have been asking the right questions since humans started thinking and those people thrived while others died.
I grew up curious, taking things apart and putting them back together, which led to 20 years in engineering. The key to success was to ask the right questions. What if’s are almost predicting the future and another term for it is “critical thinking”. It doesn’t take high IQ. Some of the highest IQ engineers could do all kinds of math but they couldn’t see those patterns that are needed for success.
With AI it takes more than asking the right question just like Google you have phrase the question 4 -5 different ways to overcome the bias instilled by the AI developers. A case in point. I had many years ago researched the reasons why and how Germany came under the sway of Hitler and allowed the atrocities to occur. The American Supreme Court Justice explained that Historical support was based that was how things were in their great grandparents day, their grandparents day and their parents day. In the United States we expanded on Natural Law as the support for our government. In Germany the last country in Europe to give up Feudalism went another direction and based their acceptance of governance on POSITIVISM. This was the defense of the Judges who allowed and sanctioned the Crimes against Humanity. If you research the causes of Germany’s starting WWII and their allowing or ignoring the atrocities Google blames the unfair burdens paced on Germany by the treaty of Versailles, however the War debt was almost paid off before Hitler took power.

Jensen Haung and AI’s ability to be used to pull all strands of information together for purpose is always going to be limited by algorithms designed by man. That give more weight to reddit that CTH. And all sorts of other valuations assigned to data, source, how deep into the bowels of the web that is searched, compiled and analyzed. Even what is ‘right’ is subjective, right from whose perspective?
Also I’ll note that NVidia is intentionally named after Invidia. The all-seeing eye, the mortal sin of Envy. And NVidia makes the essential technology for any police state 24/7 surveillance global social credit scoring system…like an all-seeing eye would enable. Paired with Larry Ellison’s declaration that AI will be used to “make us behave” it’s clear what AI Data Centers, cameras, Oracle, NVidia are building out is not in the best interests of human freedom, liberty, sovereignty and dignity.
And one of Jensen Haung’s cofounders of NVidia is Curtis Priem, whose foundation Priem Trust funds EMPAC, a human-computer interface R&D company, some beneficial applications for the paralyzed, but with Transhuman dual purpose, capacity.
And EMPAC partners with RPI, the university that the spook arrested with $40 million in gold bars is said to have attended and been recruited out of (though that is now denied, it’s spooks who would deny.)

This has always been the case; deduction, inference, and what is termed “intuition” but is still reasoning just using more/different inputs and knowledge are “smart”; having the necessary information to make those deductions is education and observations (in some circles “intelligence.”) Of course not all reasonable, sensible predictions come to pass; but some are as obvious or highly likely as gravity.
In a bygone age there was this thing called “liberal education” which had nothing to do with political leftism but simply meant exposing the person to the breadth of knowledge and awakening the capacity for adaptive reasoning. It has been replaced intentionally by rote education so that persons know what to think and not ever *how* to think.
SD and Huang are of course correct that (one of) the effects of this AI wave is making general knowledge available to all *if* they can know enough to know what to ask for; and the commentary here suggests TReepers well know that if you ask for nothing in particular you’ll get it in triplicate from genAI. IMO this is why some people are “becoming” lazy with AI — because they always were and now they have a new crutch — and others find it a huge force multiplier.
(Speaking of predictive inference, the implications at the meta-level for humanity are IMO kind of obvious – not everyone is physically equipped to do the “smart” thing and a goodly number need a jolt to spur both the willingness to think and the retraining to make that their habit)
“Success” on the other hand requires both that correct predictive deduction AND the means to effect a desired outcome out of it AND the correct timing. (e.g. Ross Perot made many correct inferences about NAFTA; President Trump has successfully positioned himself in a place to do something about it.)
Lastly none of it — AI, timing, “smarts,” can overcome the subtle but inexorable will of God. One less turn of the head and imagine the mess we’d all be in…

I interpret this to mean, the smart person or smartest person in a field of knowledge is the lone person who is predicting future outcomes BEFORE AI has the input data to do so.

The smartest people are predicting long before AI is in the mix. They are wired differently, see the long-term end results from the beginning and plot how they determine the end result.
Some time back Sundance wrote about being “alone” in the room because all the others did not know the right questions to ask.
It’s lonely when you are alone and correctly see deep into the future and no one catches up until years or decades down the road, if they ever do catch up.
That’s why currently their is gratification for many of what SD wrote about 5 – 10 yrs ago is being acknowledged as true now.
The internet has very incomplete knowledge, thus so does every AI. I have asked a single question on two AI platforms and received two different answers. It was not a complex question. Being able to realize that the AI is wrong is a sign of intelligence since one must draw on knowledge, experience and insight in an instant.
Being able to link seemingly unrelated topics and make a novel connections is the purest sign of intelligence, IMO

Oh, the public showpiece ones, yes.
I have done some deeper dives on these AI platforms as well. These platforms have glaring holes in their knowledge base. Example – when AI describes all that goes into starting and operating a business. Since it lacks proprietary information that is not available on the internet (about 20% of the needed knowledge), it says things like “And then you make money”.
You’re still talking about general instances.
Let’s say I’m in the legal profession (I’m not) and don’t want a problem like the lawyers who handed the judge a filing full of hallucinations and bad data and got a contempt ruling in exchange.
I might still use the same GPT-5.5 or Gemini Omni you can subscribe to publicly but instead of training it on Internet chatter (which itself is increasingly full of bad genAI slop, recursing inaccuracies) I’ll train it on a LexisNexis database and other case law libraries. I will pay the expensive people to test it, and I will train my clerks on prompting so they get the best results (and then I’m still going to keep them on staff checking this output).
Similarly medical; science; even in coding any IP I want to keep for my company; and definitely defense. That’s where the serious people are; absolutely using the proprietary information preferentially.

I have been a disciple of Mark for over 10 years.
All one needs to do is look at why he was banned from GB news in Britain – which at the time was the only truthful TV/News outlet in probably Europe.
He was banned by our state censor outfit called OFCOM, to which GB News bowed down before, otherwise they would loose their licence.
Subsequently they have become a shadow of their original self.
He told the truth about the Pakistani rape gangs, the global warming scam, the Muslim invasion and the Scamdemic.
Therefore he had to go.
Sadly he had to take the jibbyjab, as he called it, and is now severely disabled.

Obviously to believers in the bible and Jesus’s teachings, the Holy Spirit is the “smartest” being on the earth. Therefore, a believer in Jesus who is most in-tune with the Holy Spirit at any given moment IS THE SMARTEST PERSON on earth at that given time.
Jesus said in John 16:7 that He must depart so that the Holy Spirit could come and indwell the believers in Christ. The indwelling Holy Spirit in believers was only possible new testament (after Christ work on the cross was done and He arose to sit at the Father’s right hand).
John 14:26 – But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
John 16:13 – Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
So, if you want wisdom, or to be the “smartest” person, excel at listening to the Holy Spirit and obey.
I should also add James 1:5 KJV – If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
Trump was right about immigration and borders. The EU is now putting together deportation plans.
Trump was right about tariffs. They not only generate revenue but bring to the table other countries prepared to negotiate a deal that is better for America.
Trump is Correct about Democrats and elections. They use fake/illegal voter rolls and secret tabulations to steal elections.
Trump is correct concerning the media. They will lie, cheat and steal in order to make him look bad or even fail. They care only about themselves and not about keeping the American people informed.
I could go on but you get the drift. I have not read this book but have just ordered it. It will in all likelihood confirm what PDJT and all of us already know. We are fighting for the future of this country and the American way of life.

It’s not just having the knowledge that makes one smart…it’s the ability to grasp it, fully understand it, and utilize it that makes one smart.
I always thought Mark Steyn was the only one worthy to replace Rush Limbaugh.

When Clay and Buck took over, I moved on. They are clowns. Before I left , heard more about them than I knew about Rush all those years…… Then Clay came to TN in 2021 for a fund raiser, first thing out of his mouth was we need to move on from the Stolen Election…. Stolen is my word. I booed and never listened to Clay again.

I’ve said from the beginning that Trump II was trying to execute a paradigm shift in the US, essentially turning the clock back to a time before the globalists became the ascendant force. This ‘jump’ would resurrect once more America’s role as the ‘shining city on the hill’, drawing Western nations towards its beacon and away from their current course of self-extinction and provide a viable and highly visible alternative.
The recent TikToks of football fans experiences of EDA (everyday America) and the near total sweep of elections by Trumpian conservatives, in the American hemisphere, and even the recent reverse course on immigration, by the EU no less, led by the Nordic countries, seems to support the idea that the MAGA movement is becoming global in its reach.
As one of the frequent posters here says, Trump is aligned with the natural state of being in the world, my argument is that he’s now starting to franchising that equilibrium, using the leverage of the jump he’s executing.
I think that you are vastly over-stating the situation by proclaiming that “all of human knowledge is going to be put into a database, and computers are going to ‘intelligently’ piece it together to answer any question.” This statement is actually a scam, intended to (among other things …) sell power plants and mainframe computers. There is actually no “I” in “AI.”

If you take Sundance’s definition of intelligence, toward the beginning of the article, then AI is definitely “intelligent.”

I wish Mark Steyn had been picked to take over the Rush Limbaugh show.
While Steyn was better then the hikers that did replace Rush, he never measured up himself.
Or, alternatively, an argument might be made that the smart person is the one so tuned into creator God that they “hear his voice” and do exactly what He tells them to do. AI is great for accessing information, and that instinctive ability to read the times is desirable, but that doesn’t make for the smartest person. The smartest person is the one who knows what God wants them to do and does it.
This makes it sound like a person that smart would have no need for a Savior.
Are there really any people that smart?
I can think of only one. And it’s definitely not me.

Regarding the downfall of Europe – I and other CBP officers were reading Mark Steyn’s books nearly 20 years ago.
And we agreed with his conclusions.
I and a fellow CBP officer have been frustrated beyond belief at the absolute inanity surrounding the immigration debate for all that time.
Steyn’s motto:
“Demographics is destiny”
Is more true than nearly All the ‘experts’
would ever admit.
So very few ‘leaders’ would ever admit that immigration was a problem of great magnitude.
We would see it every day – with refugees from Ethiopia, Somalia, etc – with
H-1Bs and L-1s and H-4s and L-2s and F-1s…
with other visa categories – with TPS and credible fear’ asylees… and NO ONE cared.
And as for the ‘undocumented migrants’???? – arghhhhhhhh!!!!
It was the reason that Donald Trump’s emergence as a candidate 11 years ago struck such a chord;
He was really the first candidate that came closest to what was on our minds.
Regarding Mr Steyn – his health has suffered greatly in the intervening years – the pressure of lawsuits and media cancellations have hurt him tremendously.
While I do not agree with every last thing he says… he has been prescient to an amazing degree.
We should also recognize Pat Buchanan – who also was traveling a similar path on immigration and demographics.
While again – I do not agree with everything Mr Buchanan has pronounced over the years – he was far more right, than
wrong.
I sadly no longer believe that Europe is salvageable – oh, there may be isolated pockets of sanity and civilization that may survive…
But the demographic reality is undeniable – I in all probability will Not be here to see it – but I would assert that the Europe we have known – will

Agree, sadly, about Europe’s destiny too, a form of national suicide I fear we are imitating.
My only quibble: During the Obama regime and the rampant Biden lawlessness we watched as day after day caravans formed and traversed unheeded into the US; of course the mainstream media failed to show these daily incursions, the sheer size and regularity of them may have awakened some of the brain dead and brainwashed.
But it irks me no end when these mass invasions are referred to as “immigration.” They’re not.
They are part of the left’s very intentional topling of the demographic in this country which still cherishes a government with limited enumerated powers, which conscientiously provides for the defense of the country and protection of American business. And which stands on our rights to worship as we please, among other things.

Only part of our immigration crisis that helps the US vs Europe was that ours was predominantly from the Americas where Christian society still is the heritage. Our biggest mistake was bringing in Asians and Muslims.

I don’t know about anybody else but Jensen Huang does not seem particularly smart. In his world he’s extremely capable and successful however from what he said in my world he’s sharp as a marble. His comments are essentially transhumanism claptrap. He, like many others, skips the different contexts of philosophy, history, faith and above all what it means to be a human. A convenient conveyance for a very sad ideology. Anything mankind creates can be used for evil. Without that immutable fact, in “context” I would not consider myself very smart were I to ignore it when pontificating about artificial intelligence and the effects on civilization.
It (intellect) is after all a spectrum of ability. The smart person asks if is it a given ability or if is it inherited. I woke up on third base, did I just hit a triple? To be smart is to act on understanding such as Mr Haung and Mr Steyn’s thoughts concerning the relevant contexts.
To know wisdom and instruction, vanity and deception. What about justice and righteousness or compassion with humility? What is knowledge without experience? Those are the smarts that built Western Civilization not despair and nihilism based on cynical selfish reprobate ego. Work the intellect, To perceive words of understanding in context. For instance the great apostasy happening now, the replacement of historical anthropological archaeological truth with twisted gnostic nonsens. For sure it’s all heading somewhere. I remember one time as a little boy my grandmother had me by the arm, for good reason I’m sure, and said “do you see that man over there? He’s not as smart as he thinks he is and neither are You. I worked with neural networks in the beginning, built them and understand how they work. AI is just a hugely more sophisticated decision tree made possible by cheaper and more powerful processors along with huge amounts of cheap memory.
As with any computer model, the results have to fall within the data set they were derived from to be credible. Ask for something outside of that dataset and the model will give weird results. AI is not capable of intuitive thinking like we are. It never will be.
I wish the public could be made to understand this.
It is interesting people like this Haung never speak of God nor do they speak of wisdom, I truly believe they do not believe in God and the fact that wisdom is a gift from God and not inherent in human beings, you have to ask God for wisdom, as did Solomon. Simply put, wisdom is the appropriate uses or application of knowledge, simple definition.
The machine will never have wisdom, period. The machine will never have feelings. The machine will never have love. The best the machine will have is data storage capacity and the ability of its owner to retrieve that data within seconds. I find the problem is not the machine but the OWNERS. And I do not see these owners having any wisdom to use the stored knowledge wisely nor appropriately. No matter how many jesus chips they put in their heads.
It is interesting that some of the brilliant people that work with AI are turning to church to find answers — because of their experience with AI.
Pray that they will find the Truth in Christ and that they will be set free. For Whom the Son (Jesus) sets free is free indeed.
What a brilliant interview and just amazing that this is from 2010. Of course, I was also reminded of how I often find Peter Robinson’s interview style somewhat annoying, but the foresight of Steyn in this interview is spot on.
