Speaking to Politico reporters on Capitol Hill, Senate Majority Leader John Thune says, “ask the White House,” when questioned about the status of Jay Clayton’s DNI nomination.
Apparently, Thune is in the dark as to what comes next.
POLITICO – […] Asked whether Clayton’s nomination was being withdrawn, Thune pointed to the White House for answers. “I’ve never been asked to slow a nomination down before,” he said.
Asked for a further explanation of why Trump effectively killed the Senate GOP’s hopes of quickly confirming Clayton and unlocking an extension of key surveillance law, Thune mentioned the acting director of national intelligence who is set to start Friday: “I think he’s very committed to Bill Pulte.”
“I don’t have good answers for these questions — those are probably better asked of the president and his team,” he added. “We are just executing or trying to execute on what they had asked us to.” (read more)
Whenever I’m listening to Thune’s litany of excuses, I hear my dear, departed father’s voice in my head. He answered our teenage justifications for stupid behavior with, “Oh, bullsh*t. Try to come up with a story I’ll believe”.
While not yet a lame duck, President Trump is really 4 months from having that status legitimately ascribed to his presidency.
However, if he uses the veto again, and again, and again, he will never be a lame duck.

He doesn’t need to be asked to slow down nominations. He’s quite capable of doing that on his own. How about those middle executive positions and judgeships still bogged down under his leadership?

Re recess appointments-
I heard if the House calls for a recess, but the Senate refuses, the President has the authority to make the call- i.e. declare the recess.
I presume it’s in Article 2 of the Constitution.
I don’t remember who said as much- possibly Mike Davis.
Article II Section 3:
“…in Case of Disagreement between them, with Respect to the Time of Adjournment, he may adjourn them, to such Time as he shall think proper”
This is true. But the House has also not been having actual recesses, even when they are in recess. Something to ask Speaker Johnson.

“I’ve never been asked to slow a nomination down before,” he said……..bc all my nominations were extremely slow, except this one time when I wanted to confirm Clayton in 48 hrs so we could prevent Pulte becoming the acting DNI. So this slow down is definitely new for me! (I fixed it!)
