Speaking to Politico reporters on Capitol Hill, Senate Majority Leader John Thune says, “ask the White House,” when questioned about the status of Jay Clayton’s DNI nomination.
Apparently, Thune is in the dark as to what comes next.

Asked for a further explanation of why Trump effectively killed the Senate GOP’s hopes of quickly confirming Clayton and unlocking an extension of key surveillance law, Thune mentioned the acting director of national intelligence who is set to start Friday: “I think he’s very committed to Bill Pulte.”
“I don’t have good answers for these questions — those are probably better asked of the president and his team,” he added. “We are just executing or trying to execute on what they had asked us to.” (read more)

Someone tell Thune the nominee is a pawn.
The senate majority leader has used the pro-forma sessions to keep the senate technically in session, thereby preventing the president from utilizing recess appointments. If would be good journalism practice to ask the senate majority leader if this was his idea or if someone else asked him to keep a series of pro-forma sessions in order to slow down the nomination and appointment process.
He can’t slow them down further. They are for all intents and purposes, at a standstill.
What was shown by Senate’s rush to confirm Clayton is the Senate is obstructing the President’s nominees.

How many federal judges were confirmed by the senate during those pro-forma sessions? There are 10 federal judge nominations pending senate action including one from from March 2 and four from the month of April. These are questions that a legitimate journalist would be asking the Senate majority leader.
