I went to school with one of these guys…nice pictures, nice beat…please note the hats towards the end…are the REAL Panama Hat, made in the interior….also those big birds flying around…buzzards… road clean up crew…many times there would be several on the road….ah the memories…as I sit here in IL, amidst a hail storm…pea size to marble size…
Sit Rep-These last several days have been an amazing experience for me because I have been meeting some very generous and helpful people on my journey thus far. Life over the last few years has left me a little jaded to people in general but I am finding that once you get out of the heavily populated tourist areas that the average Mexican can be very kind. I am almost to Tampico, my feet are paying the price and I have turned to hitching rides at gas stations along my way. When my Spanish fails me I pull out my tablet and show them a script I have written for that day explaining my desire for a ride. It might take me an hour or two to find the right person and even those who say no will offer me a little money or to buy me food.
I still have two knives in my possession, a swiss army knife that has everything but the kitchen sink on it and a very nice Bark River knife that was a gift from my friend Bill. No one I talk to about selling has enough money to buy. The swiss army knife is 3000 pesos new and I would like to sell it for 1000, the best offer I have received is 300 pesos, witch doesn’t really surprise me because it is my experience that when you are down most people see it as an opportunity to take advantage of the situation.The Bark River is a handcrafted tool with some turquoise inlay and have no desire to sell it at all. If I am stoped by the police for any reason and they shake me down the knives in my possession would be enough to cause me to be detained, jailed or worse, even though I don’t carry them on my person but keep them in my duffel bag. It is illegal for any tourist to even have any type of knife no matter how long the blade is, I have had two nice folding knives taken away from me over the years by the police.
Once in Tampico and I turn north to Texas I know that this will be the most dangerous part of my journey because the closer to the border I get the more the cartels are involved in trafficking and they have eyes and ears everywhere.
If things go well I could be at the border in two or three more days, please continue to pray for me I need all the help I can get.🙏🏻DG

Tank you Duches01, you and others prayers are working, I was able to trade my swiss army knife for a ride half way to Tampico and 500 pesos. I would like to have gotten more for it but I am thankful to have a little money in my pocket and I am currently ridding in a bus with A/C. Considering I left Playa Del Carmen with nothing but a bus ticket and 600 pesos I think I am doing well.
I can feel the love, I have some joy today because of the small bounty given to me and my hope grows as I get closer to my destination.

So the first thing I did upon arriving here in Tampico was go to the nearest Catholic church to see if maybe they would help me. I arrived around 3 and was told that the father would be there at 4. While waiting I spoke with a volunteer about my travels and the need for a little assistance getting to the border safely by bus instead of hitchhiking/ walking. When the father arrived he didn’t have the time or patience to listen to me, evidently the man I had spoken to had called/ spoken with him about my need for money and without even trying to listen to me he gave me 300 pesoes, said that was all he could do and that he had to leave and take care of something more important. I can’t describe my disappointment, I know how much money these churches deal with from my experience while working with the church. If I ever needed help from the church it is now. God still lives on my heart but the church is dead to me now.

I am so close, I can’t believe that I only need 500 more pesos for the ticket to Reynosa and I can’t get it. I have my winter coat that I brought and needed in Mexico city and Pachuca because I knew it would be cold but here no one wants it, even if they had the money in their pocket. I absolutely do not want to sell my last knife, the sentimental value alone would make it hard but once again no one has the money in their pockets for what I would be willing to let it go for. I have a friend who has been promising me for days that he would help and now he doesn’t answer his phone.
I don’t like this city, it is dirty, the people here all have that hungry look in their eyes that I know well from other places that that I have been, nothing like the pueblas and city’s in the central part of Mexico that I have been traveling through lately.
I don’t want to make a mistake and try and head north using my usual modus operandi and end up in a ditch somewhere. Sleeping on the street in these cities is dangerous not only because of the homeless but the rats who wear badges worry me also.
I started the day with high hopes because of the progress I have made and when I was able to get something of value out of the swiss army knife I traded I was feeling very good about things. When I got the idea that the church would be able to help me and make the rest of my journey safer and easier I was filled with optimism and then the priest I met crushed that with a few casual words and no empathy in his eyes.
