This story is absurd, but also typically Canadian because there’s a background of duplicity at work.
The topline story is that Air Canada CEO Michael Rousseau is resigning from his office following backlash in Quebec after he released a statement of condolence in the English language. The Quebec legislature and Prime Minister Mark Carney both demanded his resignation because they were offended that Rousseau did not speak French.
Air Canada was involved in a horrific crash at New York’s La Guardia airport. While the airline was not at fault, the CEO released a public message of condolence for the pilots who were killed and the passengers who were injured. The message was delivered in English. That’s the substantive reasoning given for the Canadian outrage.

Canada’s largest airline, based in French-speaking Quebec, said Rousseau told the board he will leave by the end of the third quarter.
Canada is an officially bilingual nation, and Prime Minister Mark Carney had said the English-only message showed a lack of compassion and judgment. Quebec’s premier and others called on the airline executive to resign.

The French speaking people of Quebec should move to France, and see what their French culture can do.
The French speakers were there about 200 years before the British conquest. I’ve read somewhere that the French speakers are tired of learning two languages and are ready to give up the struggle. Maybe Mandarin Vietnamese Thai Haitian Arabic Hindi Bantu will be included in the language mandates.
Having lived in France for awhile I can tell you there’d be a side benefit— the Canadian refugees would be getting told frequently that their French scuks. Your average Frenchman barely acknowledges what the Snow Mexicans speak as French.
Quebec French is not the Parisian French you learned in school.
And Cajun French is just…….. well, it’s just French spoken with a mouthful of crawfish!

I know many non-Quebec Canadians. I’m even married to one. All of them were required to study French in the lower grades of public and parochial school. It was a government mandate.
Today most of them would have difficulty ordering a hamburger and fries in a French restaurant. Bilingualism in Canada has been a failure.

The ironic thing is that most French Canadians don’t speak English! I was in Quebec last year. Despite the tourism, hardly anyone spoke English.

Read a history of Canada, the author traces the state of things from the time of Upper and Lower Canada, with a result that the idea of Canada as a “nation” didn’t take hold until WWI.
