Thirty years ago I deployed twice with NATO’s Standing Naval Force Atlantic (SNFL) and all of the sailors we worked with were very competent and professional because the other navies sent their best ships and crews. It’s a shame to me to now see those navies (especially the vaunted Royal Navy, for whom I had deep respect) struggle to meet basic commitments.
I remember when I was in the navy back in 1995 I got to meet a bunch of Australian sailors.

While on a bank examination job in Erie, Pennsylvania, I had lunch every day in Benjamin’s on the bottom floor of the Avalon Hotel. There was an Aussie waitress there married to an Erie guy. Fifty plus years ago our UK ‘sister ship’ -to CVA-66- the HMS Arc Royal R09 visited Norfolk just a few years prior to her de-comm.
At the time, the Brits were good sailors.
Worked with the Ark Royal in the Med while on CVA-67. The Brit pilots were very good. I still chuckle remembering an intercept I made on a British Buccaneer flying at 400+ knots about 20 feet above the water! When I joined close enough to see the pilot, he was smoking a huge cigar while clipping along just above the waves. He made a very abrupt 90-degree bank turn away and didn’t climb a foot. He knew what he was doing!

Historically this standing NATO squadron has been flagshipped by a range of vessels, including oilers, and from the UK’s perspective, Type 45’s and Type 23’s. The fact the UK couldn’t manage to find even 1 seaworthy replacement vessel for the task, even if not the flagship role, is telling and frankly, appalling.

Additionally, there were 232 aircraft and various escort ships, minelayers, and minesweepers. The Royal Navy was well-equipped to handle conventional surface actions and was a significant naval force at the start of World War II.

As bad as that sounds, it’s actually worse. He said they have 17 destroyer (DDG) and frigate (FFG) type ships, but they really only have 13 total: 6 DDGs and 7 FFGs.
And those 13 ships are relatively old – the DDGs are all 12-16 yrs old, and the FFGs are all 23-32 yrs old. Due to refits, maintenance and training, at any given time, they only have, at best, 2-3 DDGs and 4-5 FFGs that are deployable – and those are over stretched to cover the UK’s world wide commitments. That’s why they could only “surge” one DDG (HMS Dragon) to the eastern Med to try and protect Cyprus and they currently have nothing that they can send to the rest of the middle east (even if they wanted to).
Also, while the UK does have two modern aircraft carriers, only one is currently deployable. Plus without enough DDGs and FFGs to serve as escorts, the carrier is pretty much useless except for training purposes.
