Following a Thursday afternoon visit to the White House Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos announced he was withdrawing his bid to take control over Warner-Discovery, clearing the way for Larry Ellison’s bid to succeed.
Larry Ellison and a group of financial investors now position Paramount Skydance to win control over Warner-Discovery. CNN insiders are reported to be apoplectic considering that Larry and David Ellison will now likely downsize the media group and change directions.

The revised Paramount offer included a purchase price of $31.00 per share in cash, a one-dollar increase from its earlier bid, which valued the company at around $108 billion.
Paramount has also offered a $7 billion regulatory termination fee should the deal fail to close on regulatory grounds, and agreed to cover the $2.8 billion breakup fee Warner Bros. Discovery would owe Netflix if it walked away from their agreement.
Crucially, the proposal also includes a commitment from Oracle founder Larry Ellison to contribute additional funding if needed to support solvency requirements from Paramount’s lending banks.
Ellison is the father of Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison, a Hollywood producer, and largely financed his son’s takeover of Paramount and his subsequent bid for Warner Bros. Discovery.

After a month or so, they switched to a regular news, 24 hour concept.
The other 3 networks, ABC, NBC, and CBS did everything in their power to ignore, and de-legitimize CNN.
Finally, when things were looking bad for CNN, and they were losing money, IT WAS PRESIDENT RONALD REAGAN THAT CAME TO THE RESCUE OF CNN.
Reagan scheduled 3 weekly interviews, exclusively via CNN only. Ignoring the other networks.
After that, the American people considered CNN to be legit.
Sadly, within 6 years, CNN went liberal, and was regularly stabbing Reagan in the back .

The problem will be so big that it will be politically untenable to do nothing. Laws will have to be passed restricting the use of AI, or there will be revolution.

The chasing of the worldly world, materialism, money, power, status, achievements, etc. has led us to lose sight of the founding principles and underpinnings of our unique culture and society. I grew up in the period just after the depression and WW2, on a farm… Our community was dependent on ourselves… After leaving the farm and serving in Navy during the Vietnam period, I was full force into corporate America and all the allure of the above mentioned worldliness… Was never comfortable with it, and am now watching it all implode…

We had to wait 3 days to have our HVAC system looked at, another several days before he (or ANYONE) would come back and fix it. And charge us $250 for the labor, about an hour’s work. We did not begrudge him that.

It is tougher than we think it is to predict what a useless degree will be in 5, 10, or 15 years.
Wouldn’t surprise me if HVAC systems start being made that are easy for AI to install and easy to diagnose. Units like the ones made now will probably cease to exist. Easiest way to do this, I imagine, is to engineer them into housing components. (I say this with no knowledge of the HVAC business, but it seems to be the way everything is going.)
If today’s stuff can’t be done with AI, it will be changed so that it can.
On a recent visit to the physical therapist (who I think is fantastic), I was wondering if his job was ever going to be at risk. To the extent that such care will still be available to ordinary people like me in the future, I think it is. I can imagine a PT robot. Very limited tasks at first with intensive human supervision. Then more comprehensive and independent models with passing time.

Neither my son or I have ever trained for HVAC, but I know how to wire up electric circuits and turn a wrench among a few other things.
A couple years ago, I installed a mini-split heat pump system in my sons old farmhouse. Installed a subpanel and ran the wiring for whatever was needed.
His mini-split system came with an outside heat pump and 4 head units. the biggest problem was drilling through 18 inch brick walls to run the piping.
His cost was for the units and for an HVAC company to check the system for leaks after everything was completed.
Not completely plug and play, but very close to it for anyone who can operate a power tool or can wire up an outlet.
Much cheaper than replacing his old boiler and doesn’t have to burn as much firewood throughout the winter since the unit does both heating and cooling in summer.
I think we are on the edge of a huge cultural shift with regards to education.
Americans as a whole have become increasingly dissatisfied with public education in this country for decades. That dissatisfaction accelerated during the COVID pandemic/scandal.
At the K-12 level, homeschooling and private schooling participation have skyrocketed with millions of families moving away from the failed public education system.
As for college, it’s become increasingly apparent to most that, for most students, a degree is worthless. The fact that most students leave college with crushing debt to go along with the worthless diploma is driving millions of young people away from the traditional college route.
It is my belief that, over the next 10-20 years, we will see a huge surge of families choosing to homeschool their children, and then for those graduates to choose internships, trade schools and other so called “non-traditional” avenues to prepare for their life’s work. The “non-traditional” will become “traditional,” and that’s a good thing.
There are many professions that AI can never replace. My 20 year old son didn’t go to college but he’s making great money building car washes, and the systems that run them. My 24 year old daughter is moving up the corporate ladder in that same car wash chain and is making great money.
My oldest son (26) is the only one who went to college. He’s a physical therapist today and is big time successful. College was the right choice for him.
There are dozens of other trades and jobs that AI can’t replace. The young people who fill those positions will become the backbone of our country.

We were homeschooling when homeschooling wasn’t cool. Ended up with two of the kids earning Ph.D’s, so Mama must have done a pretty damn good job!
Good. all of that housing built up on college campuses can house homeless veterans – many of whom deserve our help and never get it.
In our small southern town, you cannot find an alterations person, anyone to make window treatments or install them, upholstery, jewelry/clock repair, shoe repair, our car mechanic cannot find any employees, etc, etc. one reason…lack of basic math! I’ve chatted with current owners of such businesses,…all wanting to retire and more than willing to mentor anyone interested in taking over, but they never last long because of lack of basic skills. They could make a very good, independent living if they wanted with very little investment or education.
Just a side note I thought I’d mention… There’s a whole marketplace of successful businesses that are for sale, reasonably priced, labeled “Boring Old Businesses”. Their owners are nearing retirement age and they have no family interested in taking over. They’re mostly family businesses that are already well established and profitable, but long hours and dedication don’t seem desirable to their descendants. Crying shame.
Yes there are! and sadly there is a plethora of disgusting private equity firms that are making moves to gobble up and forever change, and not for the better, those small family businesses. I work in one of those type of businesses and we get offers weekly.
My husband age 70 is owner and sole mechanic in his 43 year old car repair shop. He likes to work alone rather than supervise others. He is the last independent garage in the city, after recent closings from two others when their owners died. Some people drive an hour to this shop. We desperately need mechanics.
Back in IL it was easy to find a local True Value to rescreen our window screens. Since moving to the Hampton Roads VA area, that service is non existent.
My Navy Veteran hubby is a candidate for an electrician apprenticeship thru the union. Kinda nervous about AI replacing actual electricians…and so many other profession. God help us!

About 5%-10% of the U.S. workforce are in the trades. More than 20% results in the trades sector becoming saturated, meaning that the entry of anymore into the trades results in an inability to earn a livable wage for most of those in the trades with the excess being unable to earn a living at all. The point being that everyone can’t be in the trades. So what else do you have or is advocating for a position that results in up to 80% of the population starving as far as high as that elevator goes?
Trades are overwhelmed with folks that cannot or will not speak English.
Being very well-traveled internationally, I can attest to the fact that language group most resistant to learning a new language are Spanish-speakers.
I can meet people from Europe, Asia, Africa, the Phillipines, the ME, and most in urban areas speak English.
Not Spanish speakers. They can be in the US for 3 generations, and only speak Spanish in the home. My neighbor’s mom from Puerto Rico, been here 40 years spoke NO ENGLISH. Same w/24-year Cuban neighbor. Spoke no English. My grocery delivery guys, 90% speak no English, h no intention to learn.

I do not see that changing in fact I see it improving as less people can do it. I am an artist and AI can copy but they cannot stand in a field and paint. I can. I am 70 so I will not live to see how it shakes out but we went from horse stables and blacksmiths so we will adapt with the changes.

Yep. Mechanical trades will continue to be needed, even to maintain data centers. They are being poached whenever possible and making wondefully, long-deserved obscene money in many cases.
The problem is that the huge job loss is happening to more of an older white collar professional, like attorneys and people that make a lot of money in offices.
So these are people that spent a giant pile of money to become experts in these fields and a good many of them are not young. Many will be/are also in the medical fields, it’s pretty far and wide spreading.
These are white collar workers that are not going to just retrain to become a plumber at some 40+ years old.
It’s not unlike what what the Trades endured when our country was flooded with cheap foreign labor that put all our tradesmen out of jobs back around ’08 or so.. OR when our manufacturers/engineers were wiped out when all our factories were moved over to China, they all got screwed, they were all wiped out back then and now another large segment is going to be wiped out again.
It’s almost like someone had a plan. No?

This isn’t something that 20-30 years away, it’s under 5 years away and accelerating every day. A lot of people think they’ll be able to resist it, but good luck. When a 100 million citizens are out of work, learning a trade will be 100x less helpful than “learn to code”. Very dark days ahead for those that aren’t prepared. While there are some benefits to UBI (free time), it’s going to make us slaves to the system. Unfortunately, that a trade that 99% of people will beg for when they’re desperate.

The challenge with running media companies (profitably) is that you are dependent on advertisers. Advertisers are corporations with either commercial or consumer clients. Most advertisers on TV are consumer companies. As such, they are blown by the contemporary winds of cultural and consumer preferences. Ask Bezos how this is working for him on the print side.
So again, to be profitable, you must appeal to the broadest audience. Or, own niche properties that drive very strong allegiances. I don’t see CNN changing all that much. Maybe a little more moderation. CBS has a chance to move right given the other broadcast networks very liberal biases to somewhat differentiate itself.
Given the amount of debt involved, I don’t view this as an Ellison vanity project (unlike Bezos and Carlos Slim with the NYT).

Today the large companies just buy out their smaller competitors . Years ago they didn’t allow these large co. to creat even bigger monopolies. Notice smaller hardware chains closing up, same with smaller companies just going out of business.

Yesterday afternoon, there was a HUGE amount of call option buying, on Nflx. 86 strike price traded over 80,000 calls. Closed yesterday at .35. Today over $10. 88 calls ( gives you the option to buy Nflx at 88) closed at .15 . Today over $8. So a $1500 investment ( gamble) netted you $80,000. These options only had 1 day till expiration. Today. Nflx went from 85.5 to over 96. Must be nice to have that kind of info.

For a long time people have been worried about foreigners taking over American middle-class jobs. People have been infuriated by foreigners coming here for college, overstaying their visas, and displacing US citizens in the job market.
When AI comes, this won’t be a problem anymore. Most of the foreign middle-class job population, such as coders from India, etc., is going to get fired. I’ve seen people say they don’t need coders anymore, they need software architects to tell AI coders what to do. Designing systems is not the strong suit of a lot of foreigners unless they’re native European, because it requires a lot of creative thinking and problem solving, which are not strengths of people who are not of white European ancestry.
One of the reasons why many recent US college graduates are having trouble finding jobs right now is because many of the positions they are applying for going to be made redundant in a year or two anyway. A lot of big companies are not hiring because they’re about to start mass layoffs.
For example, a company like Microsoft, which is mostly coders, could easily dump two-thirds of their employees in the next couple of years.
The Elon Musk acquisition of Twitter played a big positive role in helping President Trump win in 2024.
Let’s hope the Paramount acquisition of Warner Bros has a similar positive effect for 2026. Even if the deal does not fully close by then, the knowledge that sanity and accountability is imminent might tamp-down the gaslighting.
