Kangerlussuaq Air Base was built by the United States in 1941 when it was originally called “Bluie West-8.” (Bluie was the US codename for Greenland during WW2.)
It was renamed Sondrestromfjord Army Air Base, 1945 and was a US airbase until 1992 when it was closed down and turned over to the Danes/Greenland. They renamed it Kangerlussuaq.
