At present, I am re-reading Dostoyevski’s The Brother’s Karamazov, something I first read in my early 20s.
Nabokov suggested that Dostoyevsky was far down the list of 19th century Russian literary lights, even such, that I hesitated to pick up his work again.
I am glad I followed my own intuition, and I am noticing some humor that I missed when I was younger.
Whether Dostoyevsky wrote “great literature”, what he wrote is interesting, darkly so, perhaps the greatest purveyor of Pulp Fiction among 19th century Russian authors.
And as a matter of fact, his great novels may have never seen the light of day had he not met and married his second wife, Anna, a stenographer, who later became his PUBLISHER.
