Other than the broad announcement to around 600 to 800 U.S. Generals and flag officers from around the world, no one is exactly sure why Secretary Pete Hegseth has requested they come to the U.S for a meeting.
According to reports from CNN and various news outlets, Secretary of the War Department, Pete Hegseth has sent a notice for all of them to travel back to the U.S. for a meeting in Virginia at the War Department’s Quantico facility.
WASHINGTON – Hundreds of US generals and admirals around the globe have been called to Virginia for a meeting with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth next Tuesday, several US officials told CNN, though the reason for the meeting is unclear.
The meeting is expected to be held at the military installation in Quantico, Virginia, multiple officials said, adding that no one seems to know what the meeting is about, including the general and flag officers themselves, or why it was suddenly added to the calendar.
One source familiar said they’d heard theories ranging from a group physical fitness test, to receiving a briefing on the state of the Defense Department, to a mass firing of officers, but regardless of the reason the sudden convening of so many senior military officers is highly unusual.

My guess is there are some fiefdoms going to be cratered. Major projects used to be managed by really savvy Colonels (USN Captains). Then they can’t talk with “equal” clout in the Pentagon or to other commands, so it’s decided to make the PM positions generals, with all the overhead that goes with stars. Then when they leave their assignments, “what are we gonna do with all these new 2 & 3-star officers we allowed to happen? I KNOW! Let’s create a whole new Major Command, cross-aligned with something that already exists.” Multiply that times 400.

So let’s say we downgrade 400 billets/positions to O-6 (COL/CAPT). What exactly is this going to change? Mostly it would make for a larger field to select from for key jobs, but other than that I’m not too sure.
The reason we need so many is that Goldwater-Nichols Act in 1986 created a “joint” force alongside the “service” forces. Also don’t forget Trump created “Space Force” in his first term resulting in the need for “equivalent” stars with the other branches.

Not really. They created “Program Executive Officers” because they didn’t think the civilian Secretaries/Asst Secretaries in SecNav, SecArmy etc had enough control. So the PEOs have dual reporting. For “overhead” maybe a GS-7 Admin Asst, but typically there’s also an SES ED (Executive Director) or TD (Technical Director) for continuity. Officers in acquisition are pretty much locked into that and aren’t going into line positions.
Typical PEO flag has 5-7 major programs reporting to him. At least that’s my experience having served in PEO for Aegis Ships and PEO for Joint Cruise Missiles/UAV.
Perhaps it’s a leak/loyalty check.

We have 750-800 worldwide military bases, 70-80 in Japan, 50+ in Europe. Why?
“Number of bases” is a worthless metric. What is needed is combat forces world-wide, and support/intel forces.
In particular in a lot of places there isn’t land for a “Ft Hood” type installation. So you have multiple “bases” to support a single capability. We have nine US Army garrisons in Europe that more closely align to actual force levels.
It will be interesting to see which of the Big Brass “out” themselves by not showing up !
News flash: When SecDef orders you to come, you come. But a commander and the deputy are not both going to be absent. If a SecDef actually ordered both to leave their command if I were POTUS I would fire SecDef.

I noticed an item reporting that retired General Keith Kellogg and Gen Caine (CJCS) assured Pres Trump that Russia is losing in Ukraine and has no chance to win. The article had many quotes from Kellogg and no direct quotes from CJCS. In fact, there were many instances of Kellogg saying Gen Caine agrees or says so also. It struck me as odd that the article (https://nypost.com/2025/09/15/world-news/russia-losing-war-on-ukraine-joint-staff-chairman-envoy-tell-trump/) would make such a direct attribution without any supporting statement from CJCS. I recall that CJCS is held in high regard by Pres Trump, who could smell a setup. So, why call the GO/FO community together? Straight talk from the boss about staying out of trouble on this particularly sensitive topic and perhaps others.

I see two reasons. Security of possible war with Venezuela planning before the meeting is held, and some of the attendees will not be going back to their commands. I think some reassignments, firings, and retirements will be announced and the changes will be immediate. Only calling the ones being affected would give away the details so all of them show up and only some go back.
