As the story is told, Jamal Wali, 36, was allegedly brought to the US in 2014 after working as an interpreter for the US forces in Afghanistan. He was pulled over for a routine violation in Fairfax, Virginia.
The obviously unstable Mr Wali shouted profanities at the police, professed his hatred for the United States and regret for not supporting the Taliban, and then eventually ended up opening fire on the police officers present. The shooting happened earlier this month, and the Virginia police released the bodycam footage earlier today.
There is something profoundly wrong with our immigration system when this level of instability is intentionally brought to the USA from a war zone in Afghanistan. The two police officers were wounded, Mr Wali was killed in the exchange. Video below:

Unfortunately, these incidents follow an increasing trend as the cultural and sociological clash between foreign aliens and American values continues to unfold. Many people who travel to America come from places where tribalism, and tribal rules are the general way of life. As they encounter social rules and regulations that apply toward daily American life, they grow more and more frustrated over time.
There are a lot of people throughout the world who have no concept or reference point of EU, USA or even Western cultural civility. When I visited Russia last year this was often a topic of discussion about why the Russian Federation government controls immigration so severely.
As much as I did not like the sociology of Russia overall, there were some aspects to the strongly enforced rules protecting social cohesion that seemingly did make sense.

I thought it made sense. The guy was obviously highly agitated and armed. Had he ordered him out, a struggle might have easily occurred. As it was, it was the officer’s backup who ended up neutralizing the guy. I though he handled it as well as could be expected. Of course, if we had a sensible country, the encounter would have never taken place, because the guy wouldn’t be here in the first place.

The first officer had his strong hand resting on the roof of the subject vehicle, putting himself at serious disadvantage.
“Don’t reach” is not a sensible command. Once the agitated subject stated he was armed, then its: “keep both hands on the steering wheel” (and don’t say “keep your hands where I can see them”, another nonsensical command).
Backup officer should have had his weapon at the low ready.
This will be an excellent training video, especially with the subject giving so many indicators , starting with slamming on the brakes.
I am glad the officers survived. I feel the first officer simply refused to get into survival mode, and did not mentally accept he was most likely headed for a deadly force situation.

I found it nearly impossible to live in Northern VA. Keeping a valid license while supporting a family was debilitating in the 80’s and 90’s in Fairfax County, I can only imagine how difficult it would be now. Inspection sticker, emissions testing, county sticker (which was obtained by paying personal property tax), insurance…of course he wasn’t justified in shooting anyone, but NOVA is a very difficult area to live unless you’re really knocking down some coin.
Yeah, and I can’t wait for government to shrink about 90% so all these foreign-born and American “contractors” and grifters can take their show somewhere else.

it may not be obvious, but many police vehicles are now equipped with special cameras that literally scan decals, plates and even facial recognition.
and yes, because it is a violation to drive without a valid safety sticker, is a reason for a stop and ticket.
I do not personally like the use of this technology because it can be used in other ways to surveill, but each state, county and parish has it’s own elected officials who can be motivated one way or the other depending on how the voting citizens makes judgements on these technologies.
for instance..a few years ago, in one of the parishes I have a home, traffic cameras were installed. But this decision was never made into the public for discussion. So they were removed, because citizens felt it was going to far, and because the annual maintenance of the system was several millions of dollars. far more than the revenue could possibly return from running speeding tickets/fines. So “we” won. And the cameras were removed, and we voted to have those funds moved to public road improvement. potholes… that sort of thing. We also found that the cameras were funded through a federal grant system and the data was connected to a larger network. presumably to spy on travelers, with the idea that it might help investigate crime …which it most certainly can be useful. What we learned is that the federal government was issuing about 13 Million dollars for these cameras to be installed throughout the parish and in particular to the areas/junctions/exists/hubs adjacent to I-10 Highway. We also learned the local police had no direct access to these cameras, which raises the obvious question: why were they installed and who made the decision to do it and for what purpose?
turns out it was one of the governors “initiatives”. the former democrat governor. Our present Governor, the former Attorney General, worked with our community to have these cameras removed. But they remain along I-10. I have no problem with that. They survey the traffic and keep timely accident and road work alerts…as well, they do a pretty good job of keeping tabs on the drug traffickers and criminal element…and do play a vital role in helping law enforcement with take downs.

When I watched this video, I was thinking that this guy might have PTSD and adding the pressure of having four kids, not being able to find a job to support them, feeling like an outsider in another country, not being able to pay for insurance, having his driver license taken away and then being pulled over by the cops was the last straw in his mind. What he did was wrong but I’m trying to put myself in his shoes to understand why he did what he did.

Having empathy is an important factor in solving problems. It might be too late for this guy but there are probably thousands of other former interpreters’ and partner forces in the US that are experiencing the same challenges with assimilation and supporting their families. Even American soldiers with PTSD returning from the GWOT, have a hard time readjusting to American life. I have a close family member with PTSD from his time in combat in Iraq. He is much quicker to anger than before he went to Iraq. Now imagine yourself coming from a different culture, not having an education and trying to support your kids in another hugely bureaucratic country. It would benefit us all to understand what resettled partner forces are going through and try to proactively help them so we don’t end up with thousands of instances of what happened in this video.

That’s the problem with taking in mass number of foreign refugees, even legitimate ones escaping war zones. They’ve been traumatized and that trauma has not only gone untreated but made worse.
These people, especially children, have been traumatized by directly experiencing societal-level violence, then are whisked halfway around the world and dumped into a completely different culture- another traumatizing experience. And that’s not even touching on the underlying hostility to the host country’s social and religious values.
The problem first came to my attention a decade ago when mass numbers of Syrians were being dumped in Canada. There were numerous stories about Syrian children acting out in schools, and though it was never stated outright they did so in ways that clearly showed they were suffering from trauma. That, in turn, was traumatizing Canadian schoolchildren. A completely sad situation that Canada, being Canada, never addressed properly and which will begin to bear poison fruit in the next few years.
If we want to help, then help them in their own countries.

We lived in an area that had a common playground for young kids. I brought my nephew and niece there to play and we had a big time. Good memories.
One day, this guy came with his two kids, also boy and girl. The guy was a Muslim. All the kids were playing and that guy’s kids were thirsty. We gave them lots of water as they were very thirsty. We spoke a little and he told me that he was divorce. He told me his name. We soon parted and we never saw him again.
We heard of a murder at the local school sometime later. Lockdowns were invoked and then quickly revoked. That guy went to the school where his kids were and waited for their mother, his ex-wife to pick up the kids. He shot het to death in front of the young kids. He simply could not handle the divorce and her growing success in this new country.
I told people at work about it. I said that I actually met the guy and his kids. One coworker from Iran, who is a ‘Parsi’, a religious sect who were tormented and murdered by Muslims, told us that Muslim men are simply crazy. They are just plain nuts. He would know.

My daughter married a Christian from Turkey who had been married to and had a son with a muslim. He has come to live here for most of the year. He is fine. The only thing is he won’t eat bacon. Other than that he is just like anyone. And yes, I know they’re not all like that.

My now son in law is Catholic. He was previously married to a Muslim woman and they had a son. They got divorced, son in law came to USA, now a citizen, married my daughter, and the son at the age of 19 came to the USA.

Where I lived in California for about sixty years, it was quite a melting pot, with Mexicans, Muslims, Indians, mostly Sikh, and various other nationalities represented.
What I learned was how to read people. When one lives and works in such a far flung agricultural area where the ‘law’ is not around in any meaningful way, learning such skills is very helpful.
One of my customers failed one afternoon when coming across a couple Mexicans working on a car on the edge of his vineyard. He used Mexicans for farm labor so had a long relationship with them and felt comfortable around them. He read these two wrong and when he realized what they were doing, stripping the car, attempted to hold them at gunpoint while calling the Sheriff.
Well, underestimating how quickly distance can be closed cost him his gun and his life that afternoon. The perps later went on to use his gun in other crimes and that was how they were finally caught.
My mantra, if I feel threatened, at all, don’t hesitate. No negotiation, no citizen heroics, no ‘disabling’. End the threat.

I was a policeman in Chicago in the 60’s and believe the first officer did an excellent job of not escalating the situation. My experience is that policemen are the last person to shoot someone, until they have to.
I had one at work years ago telling us that in his country he was allowed, indeed obligated, to kill his wife for leaving him after she got a job and got in a relationship with a co-worker. Yes he was agitated and ranted on and on while at the same time wanting to get a replacement female from amongst the females in the room – myself and my colleagues. I have seen it many times. A man returned to India to collect his new wife – arranged marriage. She went nuts. Looked at Americans as if she was waiting for our devil horns to pop out of our foreheads and where did we hide our tails. A Muslim woman university student went into the basement of the dormitory, turned on her music and danced for days until she collapsed never to be seen again. It’s just too much for some.

I think he actually did have ID and registration, just not valid ones because he’d let his insurance lapse, if I heard right, because he was waving something that sure looked like a driver’s license. This man appears to have been mentally ill, but it is not clear. As we have seen in other situations, when someone is pulled over by the cops, if they are honest people they show their license and registration and own up to whatever infraction of the law they have committed. If they are not honest they will lie, they will make excuses, they will act as if the police are the problem, they will go into hysterics about how they can’t breathe, etc. George Floyd is a good example of the latter. So it is unclear if this man was emotionally troubled or a psychopath. That is not something you can tell in a half an hour or less interaction.
Whether or not it has to do with the fact that he is Muslim, from Afghanistan, or upset about difficulty getting back to Afghanistan, all of these things could be relevant or irrelevant. It is too short an exposure to the person to know.
The police acted in a professional manner. The cop who stopped him was giving him a chance to blow off steam, perhaps hoping he’d become more cooperative. He may have even empathized with him, given that he had been in the service too. Or he may have compared himself to that man, and seen there was something very off about this man: being in the service doesn’t account for illegal behavior and for aggressive behavior towards local law enforcement.
Law enforcement officials take their lives in their hands every day, and for their courage and determination to be part of the solution to lawlessness in our country, they have been very abused and their motives continuously questioned. They are blamed for their efforts instead of the public understanding that criminals behave in ways that are dangerous to the entire community, and if not for the police, they would all be roaming free preying on all of us.
I am very relieved that these police officers were not killed. What a stressful day it must have been for them, especially for the initial traffic stop police officer.

A bit of background: I’ve done extensive medical volunteer work in Asia, Africa, and Central and So America. The cultural difference between us and much of the world is immense. The tribalism has deep connections with witchcraft, the cult of ancestors and a lot of beliefs that border on satanism. as a note, it was difficult to treat sick surgical children when some grannie brought some secret potion from the local witch (mainly in Africa).
There is a significant emotional immaturity imbedded in these cultures. They loot and kill to honor ancestral grudges. They believe in boiling body parts and tree bark for good luck. They’ve moved from killing with spears to Ak47s provided by the cia or whomever. One cannot bridge this level of cultural and emotional development.
The West believed that importing our goods to them will elevate them. In a material world, that might’ve worked. But, considering free will and original sin, it does not.
How can you teach them to respect human life, man made laws, when their view of God/gods and the world is diametrically opposed? I get back to my usual point, outside the Christian view of God and humanity, we have no future. The west was built on certain principles, which, once forsaken, will cause the fall of the world.

My first thought when I read this article was to wonder if this guy was indeed one of our interpreters or a faker who managed to get here some other way.

That said, a lot of our soldiers in Afghanistan got attached to their interpreters, considered them one of their own. Many started young, got injuries, PTSD. The interpreters were promised special visas for themselves and their families in addition to pay. It is unclear whether some were promised more services and help than they actually received. Many (including one of my son’s troops’ interpreters) were just left behind to be killed when Biden pulled out.
