President Trump has signed some rather commonsense and yet remarkable executive orders permitting to Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) for fishing. Effective with the signing of these executive orders, American fishing vessels in Hawaii and American Samoa will be permitted to fish their native waters without competition from foreign industrial fishing operations.
Currently approximately 70% of all U.S. seafood is imported because we restrict our own commercial fishing fleets yet purchase fish from foreign sources. Fishes like Tuna [(both for canning (Samoa) and fresh sashimi (Hawaii)] are migratory and our fishermen have been blocked from fishing them in massive sections of the Pacific Ocean which the U.S. owns and controls.
President Trump is removing the proximity restrictions for both regions and opening up the area for American fishing harvest. During the signing event, representatives from Samoa and Hawaii explain the purpose. WATCH:

Agree. I only buy wild caught shrimp from the Gulf of America, either by Louisiana or Texas shrimpers. I buy wild caught Alaskan salmon, halibut, cod and other fish. I refuse to purchase that very questionable farm raised seafood. It is higher priced, but worth keeping my good health, to buy it and to know I am supporting my USA fisherman.

What is insidious is that the grocers sell Smithfield products under their own store brand name. Two packages of pork appearing exactly the same, you can’t miss the similarity if you look for it.
It is rumored that Smitthfield actually ships to China to be processed and then returns the product to the USA to cut processing fees. I haven’t any solid proof of that shipping at this time.
Purchase your food as close to the source as possible if possible. Think Farmers markets and bulk buying; its inconvenient at times but you’ll be eating healthy and feeling better.

The Hawaii longline fishing industry is generally considered to be a special interest here, pretty much disliked by the enviros who control policy here. It doesn’t help that most of the crew are foreigners and have no right to leave the boats when they dock here. I don’t know what’s in the EO; assume it has to do with fishing in the Papahānaumokuākea and Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monuments. First created by Bush 43 and greatly expanded by Obama. The main impact of the pacific longline industry is with StarKist tuna cannery in American Samoa.
Note that pelagic fisheries in the US EEZ are managed by NOAA via various “fishing councils”.

StarKist tuna is by far the largest private employer in American Samoa. They had about 5,000 employees. That’s almost one in ten residents of the territory! It is really the only big employer other than government. Biden’s expansion of the marine sanctuary almost wiped them out. It also led to a big decline in their population with more migration into the US mainland and Hawaii.
