As Bessent said, if tariffs are simply a tax that will be paid by American consumers then why does China, the UK, any other nation in the EU or elsewhere care how high we set them? If we pay them and not them, why do they care and why would they “retaliate”? You only retaliate against something that you are being forced to pay.
Reality is that they all know damn well why the jobs went there from here and that absent said arbitrage, all of which is something our nation’s citizens will not permit, said production of whatever it is is not economic to do there and incur the shipping costs which, in an actual parity production situation, is not worth paying since you don’t have to and thus in such a situation the jobs come back here.

Since President Trump came out in support of Musk’s demands for more H1Bs, I have seen more complacency, as if it doesn’t matter, and even some agreement that Americans don’t have the right education and skills, which is utterly false. I have seen people here blame the public schools for the “need” for H1B.

So, how about this. I’m sure China isn’t buying our farm products out of the goodness of their hearts….I’m sure they can’t produce enough to feed their own people. So, instead of a bailout, US just buy the farm products for use here. Dont even send farm products to China. Maybe use farm products for our military families, etc. How long will it be before China begs to have farm products again?
Smithfield has been Chinese owned since 2013. In the pork industry alone, they have 40k employees and have 250 farms in the US, and contract with about 1000 more.
I’m not sure how tariffs are handled in a situation like that when the Chinese “product” is both produced and sold domestically. They do export a lot of it too

Their accusations were so ridiculous they were almost comical. They want to go back to fraud, theft, waste and corruption….you know following the constitution. It’s scary how many Americans are so stupid….and they vote. When they vote the leftists back in, that will be the end of America. Short story about small town in the midwest where I spent childhood summers and watched it transform over the course of my lifetime from a modest manufacturing hub that made domestic appliances and textiles and little bit of this and a little bit of that, sustained by a mix of these factory jobs and the surrounding ag economy, not without problems but a place to raise a family and have a pretty good life, culturally homogenous with little crime and a real sense of community that transcended class boundaries…
But then NAFTAcame. The plants shuttered and the jobs dried up and in response to the vacuum left by NAFTA the state decided to build a state penitentiary right outside of town. This added some prison jobs, sure, but it also brought the prisoner’s families––mostly consisting of girlfriends and out-of-wedlock children–who were a transient presence but needed a place to send their kids to school and K-Marts to shop in, and this had exactly the effect you’d expect. The town’s demographics shifted rapidly, just as the meth epidemic began to sweep through (followed, years later, by the opioid crisis.)
This led to a pronounced generational bifurcation. Pretty much every Millenial-aged person capable of a 4-year degree left and never came back while the rest stayed behind to work a variety of retail and “gig” jobs (at worse wages and in worse conditions than their parents’ manufacturing jobs) or maybe even more likely not work at all, in a community that had badly frayed at the seams and was in many ways alien and unrecognizable and degraded and lesser-than in every way from the one they grew up in.
It is still like this, only now with the added pressure of illegal immigrants who initially came to take sub-market rate ag jobs and have since rooted themselves as a permanent, scarcely integrated rump segment of the population which, as a whole, but for maybe a few dozen doctors and lawyers and high-agency business owners and farmers who have stuck out it because it’s their home and they are duty-bound to it, really don’t give a shit about the S&P or short-term supply shocks and while I am not going to presume whether they agree with Trump about anything, I’m pretty sure are glad that at least he is trying something other than what’s been done to them over and over again for the last 30 years.

The haul was from the interception of multiple vessels in the east Pacific, and the operation took months. Very dangerous conditions for these brave USCG, and away from home for a long time. God bless them! 😀

Tiff, that port is basically in Ft. Lauderdale on the FL east coast. Not the FL Everglades. The drugs were taken in the Pacific from a number of vessels, and transported to that port to offload.

I disagree … I live in Collin County, TX …. there will be splitters entered by the TX RNC to either give Senator Corney Dog Cornyn the win directly with 51% or to force a 3-way run off that AG Paxton would loose via the 2nd place vote distribution scam the RNC uses in it’s primaries.
Senator Corny Dog has voted and spoken against President Trump’s agenda from 2017 forward.
President Trump needs to clearly back AG Paxton if Cornyn is to be defeated.
