Russia has been very good with well treating the Ukrainian soldiers that surrender and also those that are wounded. There are radio channels that are open so that surrenders can be arranged. All they have to do is surrender, and hope their higher officers do not shoot them the back.
That is an unrealistic expectation.
Many of those “surrounded troops” committed war crimes, criminal acts, murder, multiple murders. Many of them were released from Ukrainian prisons and told that they could do what they wanted in Kursk. And they did. Looting, stealing, ransacking homes, ransacking stores, killing civilians, rounding up and imprisoning them in camps as a bargaining chip for Ukraine. There are videos of stacked high trucks and vans of stolen goods being taken back to Ukraine. There are atrocities the Russians have discovered. The city of Sudzha, like so many surrounding villages, is destroyed and the Ukrainians seeded some towns with petal mines to do more destruction.
If some enemy had done such in the US, would we say, just let them leave freely?
