This is a big day for potential winnamins. We may just reach the “too much winning” phase.
Democrats are threatening to shut down government by not supporting the Continuing Resolution (CR) measure that passed the House and is about to reach the floor of the Senate. This threat is awesome, and we can only hope it happens.
Personally, I think Chuck Schumer will tell eight of his Senate members to vote cloture on the CR (they need 60 votes) and then tell them to vote against the underlying bill on the floor (where only 51 are needed for passage). However, the looney leftists in the base are stomping their feet and telling Schumer not to support the Trump CR measure.
If the CR is not passed, the govt goes into “shutdown mode” at midnight tonight and all “nonessential” employees, as determined by the Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought, are laid-off.
This is perfect for DOGE and the objectives of shrinking government very quickly. Even Politico notes the Democrats are about to step on a rake.

A Democrat-triggered shutdown would be tough for the party for another reason as well: For weeks they’ve been lambasting Trump and Musk for tearing apart the government. Democrats in a shutdown would effectively have to argue that they’re trying to protect the government by shutting down the government.

Of course, Majority Leader John Thune could mess this up and give Chuck Schumer something in exchange for votes that we really don’t want, but that’s the problem counting on the UniParty to drive MAGA strategy.
The best-case scenario is that Schumer listens to his base, refuses to give Senate republicans any votes and then we watch the government “shut down.” President Trump, Elon Musk and Russ Vought then decide which agencies and operations are essential while the rest of the government is closed. 😊 Perfect!
The bonus prize is that all the left-wing investments into Lawfare against Trump for reducing the size and scope of government, become moot. In shutdown mode, all the lawsuits are useless. lolol Happy Winnamin Day!

Aww, I was kinda hoping all the Dem Senators would have to take turns fillibustering for 24 hours straight, carried live on CSPAN, to justify why they want to close the government. Great TV with endless material to show them acting as foolish as they are.
It would have cost the Dems one of the few constituencies they have left, all those people getting federal paychecks who wouldn’t get them for a while.

I think you’re confusing this vote with the “Reconciliation” bill — which only needs a simple majority of Senate votes to pass.
This CR requires 60 votes for BOTH cloture and then passage.
Anyway, academic at this point as Chuck U. Schumer and enough of his merry band of butt-boy commies have caved and will vote for passage …
I would be amazed if all “Republicans” vote for final passage. I’m sure Vance will need to cast tie breaker vote.
It takes 60 (or 3/5ths) to invoke Cloture in the Senate. Cloture ends debate so the bill can then move to a vote. Votes are always 50% plus one.
All bills except reconciliation and judicial appointments (thank Harry Reid) require 60 for Cloture. The House only requires a simple majority to end debate.

So Schumer caved. Good. But did the Republicans give him any last-minute amendments to help convince him to cave? Haven’t heard one way or the other yet, but would not be surprised.
I bet there was Democrat internal polling that told Schumer how damaging it would be for the Dem brand for them to shut down the government. His members were probably threatening to defect.
There was clearly a political reason Schemer Schumer caved. He doesn’t do anything just for the good of the country.
Chuck the Shmuck realized that those “non essential” government parasites were not going to EVER return simplifying the DOGE boys work.
Sounds to me that they are mostly mad that they lost the messaging war…and if they can’t blame Republicans they can’t shut it down.
